That's an amazing coincidence! I wonder if the former owner of this Matchbox Zodiac remembers losing it in a small park in Chelmsford, probably 30 years before I found it buried

This arrived today, Mebetoys MK1 Golf. Interesting that they made the top of the door frames part of the body

Didn't most toy car manufacturers make opening doors work like this? My Mebetoys 340 is the same.

It always annoyed me, especially on some larger scale cars when it was eminently possible to include the frame as part of the door. Why did the Bburago Renault 4 and Matra Rancho have door frames but the majority of the rest of the range had it as part of the body?

That’s just fantastic 👍

Isn't it just! More of these 'and finally' new stories are needed in this day and age.

On that subject, I bought a Majorette Citroen Visa Chrono from The Rummle shop in Crail in about 1987. I only had it for what felt like a short time and never saw it again until 1996 when my dad found it in his fishing bag. My dad only ever brought out his fishing gear on our Crail holidays so I must have only had it a matter of days when he probably put it there so it didn't get dropped in the sea when we were on the rocks.

It's still on my shelf today.

Yes but normally they don't make the window surround so obvious, looks really odd to me seeing it left behind when the door's open

Agreed.  Matchbox could get it right way back in the 60s.  What went wrong?

How? I need one of these. Never seen one in the shops. If anyone has any spares of this model I would be happy to buy.

I'll have a look in Tesco tomorrow - there was at least one in the Hot Wheels bin in my local store on Wednesday night; I picked it up but decided I didn't really need it and put it back again...

Apologies, just realised I forgot to follow up on the Hot Wheels Toyota chase - I did get to Tesco on Saturday, and I did have a good rummage through the dump bin, but regrettably the Space Cruiser must have been purchased in the intervening couple of days.

Mostly fantasy and custom cars left in there now; anything interesting seemed to have been picked over.

The Matchbox tub was looking pretty depleted, with only a lone Push-Me Pull-You in amongst the unwanted luggage cart things.

The '36  Ford Coupe and the '34 Chevrolet Master Coupe.

Which of course I bought, for reasons that presently escape me.

If anyone wants either/ both of these at £1.50 a throw, plus postage, hit me up...

Right. Had a good think today.

The hot wheels and modern matchbox don't float my boat.

But after perusing ebay, collecting the cars I had as a child really does float my boat.

So matchbox superfast from mid 70s onwards and matchbox convoys, plus the odd majorette is what I'm gonna go for :)

I listed 100 matchbox cars on here a while ago (see page 1061 onwards) and still have a lot of them if you are interested. There are also some majorette.

I'm guessing here, but I'm wondering if tightened toy safety standards in the late 1970s played a role here - doors and things had to pass a tensile strength test, and possibly the window frames cast onto the door had a tendency to shear under load and leave a sharp part?

It may have been easier just to delete the frame, or cast it into the main shell, in order to get a safety pass.

That said, the 1/24 Bburago Land Rover SIII had window frames cast onto the front doors, and it was available well into the 1990s. Tougher, chunkier casting maybe?

I understand that the disclaimer, "Collector's model, not suitable for children under 14" was a way for modelmakers to avoid having to submit their products for child safety testing, and so retain small/ fragile detailing.

It really made me fume when I was about 11 or 12, as I thought I was being 'discriminated against' (I really was an insufferable prick back then) - not that I was ever refused when I went to buy a Vitesse or whatever. I now understand why it said that on the box!

Incidentally, following the Corgi Model Club blog posts also gives detail on some of the changes they've had to make to the remanufactured models in order to comply with current safety legislation. Apparently the battery operation of the forthcoming Cadillac Ambulance with working lights has been a ball-ache, as these days the battery has to be non-accessible to kids - so now screws are needed, to stop Junior from winkling it out and swallowing it.

Which apparently happens, and can be fatal...

No.65 Airport Coach from 1977.

This one is in sealed box, so I'm not going to open it. No model number on box, but I think its MB55 from 82/83 maybe. I've not seen many with a black B pillar. I think the one I had as a kid had a white B pillar.

I was 11 when this was made and getting to the end of buying superfasts, so this would have been one of the last I ever bought

A tale of madness. Small Tesco in town had Hot Wheels 5 packs on two for £12, which is £10.80 after staff discount. Unfortunately out of the two I wanted, they only had one, the Race Team - two of them on the shelf though.  Thought I'd try the big Tesco - two of the Demo Destruction set but not the other one! Argh! Had to buy both, then go back to the small Tesco to swap one...

As already shown on these pages, it's a cracking little thing. I may even deviate from my normal practice of leaving stuff carded and break this one out for a bit of detailing, as others have done.

Nope, I still haven't found one yet. The local Tesco has scaled back its space for HW/MBX, with just pegs (or whatever they're called) rather than room for a whole box. 95% of what was on there was that wretched luggage carrier thing.

There was a reasonably fresh box of HW in Morrisons, but I didn't notice the Civic, I'll watch out for that one.

Any purchases I make from now over the next couple of weeks will be in France, fingers crossed I'll be reporting back soon with bountiful tales of Majorette acquisitions......

Here's my remaining one, these two are my favourite late 1980s Matchboxes. Notice the lack of opening features by that time, still nicely detailed though.

The Sterling is just so damn crisp! I bloody love it. Especially the sunroof. I might still find a NIB example to bank for completeness, but I'm well pleased to have this one. You kept it remarkably well.

Random: I bought some things off FB...

When I collected them the lovely people had polecats and ferrets and a nice garden. And a shed of toys they resell.

Let me have these for a tenner, which I thought was pretty generous, the cars are playworn for the most part but I remember being excited to have these cases as a kid...
