Tht is ace for the money. A model MK4 Escort and MK2 Fiesta is something I've long been looking for at a reasonable price.

Word is that the next Vanguards casting is likely to be a MK2 Fiesta, with provision for sporty and standard models, so fairly pricey but still a lot cheaper than what's on offer currently.

Posted

I've only bought one Vanguards in the past decade because I think they are simply too expensive now. I think there was a MK2 Fiesta made by another manufacturer about 20 years ago but the name escapes me.

Very nice. Was that the one ebay the other day? A real bargain if so, I reckon! Really nice condition.

I watchlisted it and got sent an offer so was a pretty good price. Makes up for keep getting sniped on stuff lately...

While having a rummage through cupboards at my parents house to find a couple of EFE busses to help my 12 month challenge, I found a few other models.

40 models of yesteryear.

Two boxes of random models - more detail when I have time to come back and take a proper look - and these

As you can tell. I like bus models lol

But won't be keeping any bar the EFEs.

So if you see something you like. Shout.

The one by Whitebox I presume?

Quite pricey nowadays, and that's if you can find one. I've seen a part-work yellow Ghia, which might be from the same casting, but again, rare.

It's the yellow Ghia I have seen but that white one is ace. It reminds me of the tat that dealers used to stick onto Fords to shift outgoing models.

I'd very much like to find a Mk2 Fiesta in 1/43 - was aware of the Whitebox offering, but I'd sooner have a RHD version if Vanguards are soon to launch them... chances of them producing a version in Mistral Blue are probably slim, but I'd quite like a small version of my old one.

Though I could do without the 'orrible wheeltrims (which thankfully fell off not long after).

The current Mrs BB was in town and video called me as Poundstretcher had Hot Wheels, they've never stocked them before as far as I know.

Been a late one today, but I was pleased to see a little package was waiting for me, all the way from France,

IMG_20211215_213650.thumb.jpg.875a6a99d747c897431f901750e4e943.jpg

Truth is, I realised I've been a bit decadent with all this Minichamps German luxo-barge buying of late, so time to go back to something a bit more shite, subject matter - wise!

IMG_20211215_213609.thumb.jpg.21d68da404e90060656fffe300eb81b6.jpg

Yep, that should do it.

IMG_20211215_212213.thumb.jpg.8abe9bafdfd581e999beb2c7b631c6f8.jpg

I was quite excited to see the Mk4 Escort, one of the chock-full-of-shite South American 'Salvat Involidables' partwork series, appear on Jumajo's listings. Previously I'd only seen it on eBay with ludicrous price tags of about £30-£40.

£8 from Jumajo seemed more like it, and that includes a posho acrylic case as well, rather than the blister packs they normally come in. Mk4 models are still relatively thin on the ground. The resin Neo RS Turbo (£££££££££££), the XR3i and recently launched (and rather good) RS Turbo by Corgi Vanguards (cheaper but still ££££££) and the old weird XR3i with RS kit, early front bumper and late rear spoiler casting  from IXO (white), Whtebox (grey) and Triple 9 (black).

But so far, this is the only standard 5 door relatively-base hatch I've come across.

IMG_20211215_211804.thumb.jpg.5c98410c1f3e9161708da6ff608cfb3d.jpg

So, as an Ixo-sourced (I think) cheap partwork, I wasn't expecting perfection and sure, we're not talking Minichamps/Vanguards levels of accuracy or finish here. But for the money, it's pretty good. The shape is captured much better than the partwork MK3 5 door that's kicking about.  As can be seen in the above pic, there's a bit of a casting flaw around the left rear arch but I think it pretty well represents any wob laden rear arch on any Mk4 since about... well... 1989 ish!

IMG_20211215_212231.thumb.jpg.1fd126ca92b990bd33979d180c7d3b00.jpg

But the GL spec wheel trims are pretty well done. Might need a bit of careful silver Sharpie action around the window frames, being a GL.

IMG_20211215_213233.thumb.jpg.630fb6e1f2b045cb2cf51d450a7c7d92.jpg

Again, hard to photograph the interior and, it's a cheap model so it's a sea of black, but the shape of the dash is there, there's a correct pattern steering wheel, and even the stubby little column stalks are there.

IMG_20211215_212615.thumb.jpg.522062e83d706dae830cd88f6913aa71.jpg

Locating tabs apart, the rear lights are pretty good too, and check out that font on the boot badges!

About £7.50, depending on exchange rate fluctuations. The Escort set me.back about £15 in all, posted. Though you can save about £1.50 and get it in the blister pack.

Today's arrival was this Corgi Rockets Escort from the James Bond set20211217_183956.thumb.jpg.a2ad1f3ab5fdb9d697b1b078bea5bf87.jpg

This version seems harder to find at a decent price than the other rally version, but I had enough Nectar points to pay for it so it doesn't count as buying it 😀

When it arrived,it had no interior, but these Escorts push together so I fitted the interior from the one I've already got which needs restoring.

Here it is with the other cars from the set20211217_190410.thumb.jpg.2d3229863facc6fa66c87381a3c2649b.jpg

99p haul on eBay. Cougar dragster is engineless and battered but the tractor will go towards building up the parts for a low loader and the Sand Cat is pretty much mint. I have the Datsun already but this one is much tidier than mine.

That Mira 128 is lovely , I wish I knew where to find things like that for not £££'s.

I have loads of saved searches for tiny tat and go through them when I have a spare half hour, it is getting harder to find bargains though. Only advantage to me is that I've done quite well lately selling off the doubles and ones I'm not interested in as job lots. I'm amazed that people will pay good money for quite badly damaged Matchbox etc but it suits me.

I do wish I didn't keep getting sniped though, lost out on a boxed Majorette Mustang and an unusual colour Zylmex Roller to last second bids this week

Screenshot_20211218-083639_eBay.thumb.jpg.01684cf45f175128cb09eb51597aae97.jpgScreenshot_20211218-083621_eBay.thumb.jpg.33ac01fa3d39043679de14cb8ed6ba87.jpg

I'd quite like a change in eBay rules that any bids with less than 30 minutes to go reset the end of the auction so there's always half an hour after the last bid

Posted

I had that Mustang, sold it on here I think. I bought mine in France in early 90’s, don’t know if it was available in U.K.

The absolute best were the 1/18 Majorette, they were cheapish in France at the time and were really good models, a bit toy like perhaps but the subjects were good like the Peugeot 605 or a really good Mk1 Mini.

Today's arrival, this will probably have to be it until after new year! (Although hopefully Santa will be bringing something diecast...)

IMG_20211218_135506.thumb.jpg.9fd731dc6e1bcd7eca85aca5d1aa7e22.jpg

As said before, Vanguards are a large part of my collection, but they are so expensive nowadays. It seems only part work models are the bargains in 1/43 now.

I did manage to snag this Golf for £19 posted, which while not being pocket change, is just over half the RRP. The Monza Blue variant was new this year (albeit held over from 2020), so only about the third brand new Vanguards model I've had this year.

IMG_20211218_134742.thumb.jpg.08792119c06817b4a34f3c2761633c4b.jpg

The price shows how unpopular these MK2 Golfs are, which is a little unfair. The more ardent collectors and classic car fans were spluttering their real ale into their beards when Vanguards launched a number of more contemporary, European themed models into the range, probably going for the Minichamps market. ("Harrumph! 1980s European cars indeed...") There were the Mk1 & 2 Golf, BMW E30, Peugeot 205 & 309, Vauxhall Astra Mk2 and Cavalier MK3. They didn't sell too well at the time, though some like the Cavaliers and the Peugeots can go for strong money. Even now, unsold beige Golf MK2 CLs can be found brand new on eBay. Only the Oak Green big bumper GTi seems to be sought after, natch.

IMG_20211218_134806.thumb.jpg.987c01a09efb0f3ae4bc4d682324ec15.jpg

In all though, it is IMHO a good model, the Mk2's shape is captured very well indeed. The join at the bumper/wheelarch is a little clumsy, but it does allow different versions like the base CL and big/small bumper GTis.  Sadly, at this time, there was a bit of cheapening going on, so those 'modern classics' mentioned above came without the usual sprung suspension, and had things like solid, rather than hollow exhaust tailpipes and less detail on the wheels.

IMG_20211218_134842.thumb.jpg.6bcab5632df80378e74f170661945aa7.jpg

It has to be said, these 16 valve wheels are among the worst they have done. The lack of detail and the too-high tyre profile make it look like it's wearing 13" steels with trims. The Pirelli P-slot ones they do for the early GTis are better but not by much, only the BBS type on the big bumper ones are reasonable.

IMG_20211218_135201.thumb.jpg.87fd75ee789f01dbe41ddbc38b780f4a.jpg

The sunroof detail is tampo printed rather than stamped, but again it allows for the base versions.

IMG_20211218_132915.thumb.jpg.18f5b54c18fd91c7facb7fe6f09b0b57.jpg

Being a 2021 version though, it does have interior detail, with a nice representation of the rainbow cloth.

However, I've already bollocksed it up, as when I got it, there were some annoying thumbprints on the inside of the rear screen. (Not unusual apparently, as Corgi recently changed the supplier in China where the models are made) and when taking the car apart to clean them off, the rear wiper pinged off, never to be seen again... 😡

IMG_20211218_133645.thumb.jpg.641789421ed504ac4560f2424fb99cd7.jpg

No complaints on the front end though.  Everything, badges, lights, red stripes and even the plate font are brilliant.

IMG_20211218_133724.thumb.jpg.0913b2a11c7789d1149acdd98ae316e1.jpg

Same story at the rear, tailpipes apart.

IMG_20211218_134830.thumb.jpg.75eb25ecb8dcde78c1afeb99266cb54d.jpg

Still, I'm liking this one, and it fills a gap in the Vanguards collection. A set of replacement wheels would transform it, I think.

By repeatedly pressing down on the roof beacon it tips the rear body, then lowers is again!

How cool is that.
