Cheap little paint scraper from China, £1.86 delivered! Should be ok for diecast work, esp Lesney.post-20084-0-03248700-1543494814_thumb.jpg

Grilles were F88 items I believe; engine was the F86's 6724cc TD70-series putting out about 210bhp.

When your run of the mill Gardner 6LX in the mid 70s was churning out 150bhp (or 180bhp in 6LXB form) it was quite peppy.

I know that some of the subby lads in our company who ran Volvos had, apparently, coach diffs fitted to them.   They used to fly too.   This was the late Seventies when tachos were barely checked and the only place you were likely to get GV9'd was waiting for the cross channel ferry.

These are such nice little things for a quid. I wouldn't have gone for these Peugeots, but they came in the fabulous two tone GT trim, so...

Yet another wobbly Ami 6 has arrived. Very soon I'll have enough in different colours to fill a car transporter. Did Norev make wobbly transporters ?

I like the white tyres on this. White walls on a real one would be wank though.

Those ABC Ailsas are the nuts. I got my two in 2001 and 2002, just as ABC split up. The opening wire mesh grille and full engine and chassis detail are brilliant and wonderfully crude, a bit like the old 1/43 Russian Diecasts of the 1980s.

Posted

Agreed, whitewalls on Norevs are great. I'm not sure about when they had them, or why - but I'm sure JM could probably tell us...

Posted

They made them in ye olde dayse. The tyres are white plastic throughout and the cars were rolled through a puddle of black paint.

Yes to the car transporter, too.

Being able to afford one is the only problem.

That 1:24 Capri looks alright! I hope the rear view is half decent - the 1:18 Norev offering is all kinds of wrong. It's heartbreaking.

I suspect the drivers of WUMPTY thought WTAF? when they got their hands on Ailsas, with that punchy little lump, AND power steering. 72 and 75 gave West Riding's much newer Lynxes a run for their money. I had to get that model though, it may get repainted at some point, I used to have an EFE VR in FS livery as their URF671S, an ex PMT Leyland 501 powered gutless wonder that loved the tow wagon, I used a Devon General example as the livery was so similar

I've been busy with work but now have a bit of time off to do more invoicing and accounting stuff, so I can actually get paid.

That said, Mrs_Jon has gone away for the weekend with mates, so what better to do than pore over my latest additions all afternoon, especially as a few were delivered today, whilst I was out dropping her off!

First up, let's pull out some books, so hopefully we can get some nice backdrops.

The first items were all picked up from my favourite Auckland shop. As always, outdated Apple contraption is employed for up close grainy shots. I'm starting to shy away from 1/64-ish scale, as I'm liking 1/43 more at the moment, though I picked this up as I used to collect miniature Ford Transits of all scales but never got one of these with a canopy. Pleasingly came in an already opened box but I found it quite hard to find a suitable scene for this one.

45200989595_11e85cf059_z.jpg

Siku Dudo van came with comedy oversized suitcase parcels, which had the old Siku logo stamped on. This is clearly not a 1/43 either but Sikus of this era will always bend my newly self inflicted rules. This had recently had a price reduction (of which I saved even more, for bulk purchase) and peeling off the price stickers (which were dated) reveals that it had been sitting in the shop waiting for me to buy it since 2013!! Sadly, this is my best picture I reckon, so peaking early.

Not actually quite sure I really wanted this (anyone fancy an international trade?!) but with recent purchases here of late, I chose to add to my wobbly plastic collection (now up to 3, though one is still in the UK). This was a bedfellow to the reddy orange one I shipped over to Junkman and the yellow Renault 4CV is still there. Interestingly, that one had a metal base, which I didn't know was a thing. Purple complementary scene courtesy of Mrs_Jon's yoga mat and block.

I really like this little Solido Citroen LN, even if the headlight scale is a little irksome. It has no back seats in the casting, so here it is making a delivery of some sort to a Metro station, since it's seemingly a van and is no doubt very adept at traversing subterranean stairways.

46112378571_e95ff2b64c_b.jpg

Another Solido but this is one of the things I received in the post today. A nice big casting and pleasingly squishy suspension but best for a wider diorama, as it's not the best in terms of quality control and there is a bleb below the paint surface on one rear wing; hopefully this isn't one of those models that's going to spontaneously fall apart one day.

32241151248_b0c3df4664_z.jpg

What a cutie! Actually, it's a Polistil, which means it's very crudely made but in an endearing way; I imagine the paint chips are more time-worn than play-worn. All the models bar the Panhard came boxed and this one also had some random transfers and a few cards advertising other Polistils. I can take or leave the plastic wheels but I've seen worse on Polistils, so won't grumble.

A slight bit of budget stretching went on to procure this but what a corker! This Gama 411E has more opening bits and is noticeably heavier than my Gama Mk2 Passat, so Dinky and Corgi weren't the only ones to see a drop in quality beyond the 1970's. No idea why this came with a matt black bonnet but whatever, it's easily my favourite recent purchase.

Once again, you might as well have an image which illustrates my levels of productivity on days off, when left to my own devices.....

46112378181_6446ef3249_z.jpg

Anyway, I've no idea why I prefer to collect actual old models compared to new castings of old stuff but I do. That said, I still like the few Atlas Dinky stuff I have, which kick-started my whole buying spree this year and it's great to see what others are buying, so please don't take offence, as I'm certainly not slagging off modern stuff.

I finally got round to do some work on my ebay purchase, I gave it a quick sand to remove the 'steps' where the paint was chipped, I really should have stripped it, as I lost some of the detail as I added more layers of paint, here is it set up in my 'spray booth'

post-17353-0-37678200-1543565410_thumb.jpg

I had one good tin of primer and one from the pound shop, the good one's nozzle decided not to work so it was treated to pound land primer

post-17353-0-34997000-1543565476_thumb.jpg

Next was a layer of pound land gloss black, which I didn't like as I thought it was just to shiny

post-17353-0-08327400-1543565531_thumb.jpg

I grabbed a can of matt black I had, oh wait that's not the matt black, that's primer, oh how I laughed

Eventually found the matt black but it didn't look very matt when applied

Once this had all dried it was time to mask the bottom off so I could paint the top white

White applied

post-17353-0-96292200-1543565773_thumb.jpg

Masking tape remove, now I need to paint 3D printed funnel and then add some details, I'm reasonable happy how its turned out so far, although I wish I'd stripped it first.

At one of the recent toyfairs, while I was stuffing my pockets with Corgi Minis Junkman asked what exactly I was going to do with them.

Clutter the miniatures thread, of course. Like this:

To be honest I think I enjoy the spray paint more than the models. This season isn't suited to outdoor painting, so I've been roasting the models with a 1500W heat gun as well as heating the paint cans. I'm very happy with the resulting finish.

Don't think I was aware that Corgi did a 1/64 Europa, as Matchbox made one, too:

I was about to comment that Matchbox and Corgi making the same model in the same scale at similar times was unusual but then I thought of a few ones from each maker I had growing up, like 1/64 SD1s, various Land Rovers and Range Rovers and Mk3 Transits, to name a few.

The Rancho was even made in 1/64 and Superkings size by them both and as was often the case in my opinion, Matchbox made the better smaller scale model and Corgi made a much better larger scale effort.

What are the chances to pap the 126 at the Colosseum exactly when the three Africars were there?

411 front lid is flat black because sporty, you know. German dads did indeed paint the bonnets of their family cars black back then, as our neighbour did with his K70 and Herr Schulze with his 20m. It's probably the German equivalent to go faster stripes. Usually this was complemented with a tinted stick on stripe across the windscreen header with something like "Rallye Team" (sic) on it and a chromed twin exhaust tip. "Rallye Team" mudflaps, earthing strap with little cateyes and sport steering wheel optional.

One of my favourite super fast castings is the no 70 Dodge dragster.

I have managed to find 3 decent ones,

It wasn't until I had them together I noticed a difference in them.

Are there any more?

Amazing how any of these survived, given how fragile they are.

I do have another version of the Dodge,it's white and orange called "Orange peel" can't find it at the moment.

Nice hauls from all concerned. Jon I'm envious of the Solido 604.

I had that 411 in red, lovely model but I sold it on some years ago.

I haven't managed to add one of those to my MIB Superfast collection yet. Should have bought more when they were cheap in the '90s.

The old Schiffer guide I use lists baseplate colours as dark yellow, light yellow, tan, metallic green, dark purple, unpainted and black, so you've a few more to find yet......

Looks like Dragon Wheels uses the same interior moulding?

I've been bidding on a few and watching the bids fly past my maximum bid. The ones I'm bidding on all need repairs too.

So instead of my usual bidding method of drinking more pastis and chucking in even more bids, I'm bidding on fucked Corgi transporters.

I'm going to build another transporter in the same Autoshite livery as the last one. Undecided on the tractor unit, it'll be a Citroen of some sort...

black bonnets were a thing too in this country in the early 1970's. especially on the likes of the Capri and Escort in GT trim where the mat black bonnet came as standard.

enough of that though, kerry has drilled and screwed the new dislay case on the wall. and i've had a go at filling it. well for now anyway.

it turns out that the shelfs are to close together to accomodate the diecast motorbikes, and sadly also the overhead electric toy trains. is the locomotive with its pantographs stands just too high.

still it gives scope for either more diecast cars, or trains, to be bought and housed in it! most of them trains have their boxes so they are usually stashed away in several cupboards around the house.....

You'll just have to buy Kerry a new cabinet with wider-spaced shelves, for Christmas!
