I love how the Monstro driver keeps stressing the fact that the Cavalier had been blessed with fuel injection! Were Austin-Over so advanced as to be selling carburettor-equipped diesels?

Quite OT, have to ask, though. What is it with that 'i' the driver claims to be a spec?? 'i' after the 2.0 is for injection or not? German Opel Vectra, the pendant of that Cavalier came as LS, GL, GLS and CD, these were the specs, petrol engines were 1.6i, 1.8i and 2.0i, neither of them without said injection abbreviation.

His is a pre-facelift Cavalier Mk3, which were available both as carb or fuel injection. Pre-facelift trim levels were base, L, Li, GL, GLi, SRi, CDi and GSi from memory IIRC. I think only the base and the L were available with the carb fed 1.4 mill.

Post facelift all Cavaliers were fuel injected and became the Envoy, LS, GLS, SRi, CDX etc...

Ah, Thanks to that! Didn't know that there were carbed Cavaliers of that age (phase), thought they were all injection.

Of course there was that 70s and 80s 'injection-hype', thinking of early BMW E3 3.0SI, Merc 280E, Ford's 2.8i(njection), Audi 5E, Golf GTI and so on, 'i'-badged cars were a big deal at that time. I just thought it was stupid to make a big thing about a 2.0i in the mid-90s, where carbed cars were a poor exception to the rule in midrange.

On the early Mk3 Cavs, you could get "odd" models like the 2.0i L which went very much against the grain at the time - imagine finally being able to get a big engine with low spec L trim! You could only get the big engines in a model range with the higher trim levels until then, generally, though an exception in the later '80s might have been the 2.0L Montego - still only with a carburettor though.

Ford went as far as the Sierra/Sapphire 1.8L at the time, again carb'-fed, but of course they had the 2.0GL and 2.3GL from launch (from memory) - still carb'-fed though, and a relatively high spec.

Mind you, in the mid-'80s Vauxhall also offered cars like the Mk2 Cavalier GLi with the 1800i engine - they started the trend that led to Injected family cars with lowish family specs, it could be argued...

By the time the 'facelift' Mk3 Cavs came along, they were all fuel injected due to having Cats and the L/GL/SRi/CD designations were gone.

a bit off topic I suspect, but this has being doing my nut in for yonks.

CD - did it really stand for 'Consort Diplomatique' ?

& if not, then what?

& where does that leave

CS - Consort Sporting

& CC - Consort Classique ?

I think that these stink & I would be happy to be told I was talking from my tract.

Seems to be about time for a 'trim-thread'. :)

Low trim-big engine? There are some. Granada 2.8L, Opel Commodore 2.5S (base), Audi 100 5E (base), Passat LS5...

Cortinadave might be able to confirm this....

Big engine, low trim? Ford were the masters in the 70s, IIRC. Yer Consul 3000GT was quite a low spec, but came with the brutish Essex that no other Consul could have (and shared the Granada's grille, again something no other Consul was allowed). Cortinas followed suit; I had a 1972 2000GT which was pretty darned basic inside. I believe the thinking was, if you want the power, you probably aren't looking for the luxury. Now, of course, you can't have one without the other, in these dark days when even a diesel automatic 4x4 is called "Sport."

Big engine, poverty spec and no mention of Mercedes? What's going on here?

And Porsche. Seem to recall if you wanted a passenger door mirror you had to request (and pay extra for) it.

In the early / mid 80's if you bought a new BMW you could buy a basic car with no radio etc. You could then in theory buy a basic 6 cylinder E30 but I have never seen one. BMW are still at it now as you can buy the Mini with steel wheels etc.

A car salesman mate was at the new panda launch this week in rome, the base model italian market pop version doesn't have a radio, and the 2 cylinder non turbo engine as the base engine.

Great thread, I can remember watching the twat in his Maestro back in 1995, and everyone at our office the next day having a bloody good laugh about it.

'Clubman' - I wonder what club that is ?. It probably has sub-sections like 'Shit underpowered engines', 'Hideously outdated hatchbacks' & ' Dogs Toilet specs'. He could have joined all three.

He should have just chucked his notice in, but when he starts talking about the Cavalier & Rover 216 like they were the holy grail or something I lost any pity I had for him, frankly

You can find plenty of taxi spec Mercs around, but not many big engined models where the original purchaser hasn't had their arm bent up their back and begrudgingly spent at least a few grand on options (admittedly like £700 for a sunroof, £2000 on leather etc - bargains  ).

I think the worst are BMW, some twat where I worked in the 90s bought a BMW new and I swear the robbing bastards at the dealership charged extra for just about anything that wasnt essentially required to make the thing go or stop.

I think he got his revenge on the car. from what i recall it only lasted a few years!

Perhaps we can trace the people from the series and invite them to the bbq we are arranging :)

Wasn't sure if I imagined it or if many years ago I actually did see a mark 2 Granada with '2.8 L' on the bootlid. :? Nice to know it actually existed. :)
