Tomos!

I briefly owned one of these beasties about ten years ago - it was pathetically slow and vibrated so much my arse would be numb after about two miles. It was embarrassing being beaten away from the lights by kids on pushbikes, although given a long enough straight the Tomos would eventually overhaul them. I remember one time the B reg Mini Mayfair I was running at the time broke down on the A140 about five miles north of Norwich, and I went out there later that day on the Tomos to try and fix it. There was a stiff headwind, and with throttle wound right open the (surprisingly accurate) speedo was showing 18mph. Not great on a 60mph single carriageway A road... The other oddity with it was that the logbook said it was a Volvo. Everything else was the same - silver, 49cc, taxation class bicycle - but obviously someone at DVLA had clicked on the wrong make in the drop down list at some stage.

I never had a problem with my Tomos being slow, and I was about 16 stone when i owned it - only Euxton lane hill caused it to slow. I had to replace the chain & sprocket as the originals were terminally worn, I couldn't get Tomos ones so I managed to get some from a Honda to fit and it ran fine. Seemed to run on fresh air too. Lack of any form of locking mechanism made BFO padlock and chain essential!
