New Family Shite - 1989 Honda Aerodeck!

My dad was in the bookies today and someone overheard hem talking about his search for a new a Car, The bloke said his mother in law was looking to get rid of her husbands car after his recent death.

We went and had a look today. It had been sat in the garage for 2 years and had no MOT and Tax but was a one owner from new car and had done less than 16,000 Miles! and always been garage kept.

I have to say at this point I know nothing about Japanese cars but some rummaging through the paper work revealed it was a Honda Accord Aerodeck 2.0 EX Turbo? and was supplied by John Cooper Garages (of mini fame) in 1989.

We spent a bit of time looking it over the battery was shagged and jumpstarting wasn't working, so we swapped it for the Scimitars battery and if fired up straight away even on the old fuel! A quick drive revealed everything was working fine brakes had not suffered as the handbrake was left off. The only thing broken was a reversing light! Theres not a spot of rust on it and only a couple of Giffer parking marks.

So my dads bought it as a replacement for the Toyota Corrolla that we sold to some Russians on Gumtree and for the time being the Accord will stay with us as a family car. IF its rejected by my mother there is a chance it could be up for sale though I think my dads keen to keep it for a while.

Its going for an MOT on monday and a look over with the mechanic and a change of fluids.

Enough waffle heres some photos:

Ps I really know nothing about these so any info greatly appreciated. I assume these predate Hondas from Swindon so would have come straight from Japan. Is the parts situation dire? How much are they worth?

That's incredible! Looks good enough to take to cla$$ic car shows, if that's your thing 8)

Superb. What a find! Not sure it's a Turbo though - Honda didn't go in for that back then did they?

Hard to value it as there can't be many around with that sort of mileage. It'd be a few hundred quid if you added a 1 in front of the milometer reading.

I've wasnt too sure about that either theres an air take off from exhaust manifold to the airbox but cant actually see one anywhere.

Great find, I love these Aerodecks (and you have noticed how similar in shape they are to the Scimitar!)

I worked in a Honda dealer from 88-91 and these were probably my fave car to drive other than the CRX.

Thats not a Turbo but the saloon version did come in EX16 flavour though.

If it comes up for sale please give me a holler...

Thats the preheater for the Air intake, helps it warm up on cold days.

That makes sense cheers, I only had the say so of the son of the former owner who was selling it that it had a turbo. I couldn't find it anywhere!

Ace find, that looks like new! What's the deal with the registration number?

This car is so cool that I've come back for another look. How excellent does it look parked up behind the Scimitar? Fair play on Honda for going their own way with what a family car should be - a pastiche of a 1970s plastic sports estate!

Lame to fame. I used to have to look after John Coopers granddaughter and her mate sometimes in Ferring, where his garage was. Right little madam. Last time I saw her she was about 13 in a pub with a group of 18 to 20yr old lads......

Saying that the lass she was with turned out okay so maybe was not too bad.

Anyhow, those are nice cars. Guy at the bus depot I used to work in had one and I used to blezz it round the depot if it was in the way. Very comfortable to sit in. I only drove it 100m at a time so can't comment further.

Is it only me who thinks Aerodeck is a cool description? Wish they still used it

Good point about the plate Ash, G092? I love these Areodecks, I used to drive a lot of them 10 years ago and remember them to be a comfy yet quick way to travel, and the pop up lights are very cool.

They remind me of a Volvo 480 to look at as well.

I think the '0' before the '92' has been superimposed over another number.

Nice car, I did consider one of these back in the day, I used to see one or two in Autotrader going for less than £200, and that was with MOT and rent!

Looks as if its got its original overmats, something you dont see alot of in old cars and even newer ones too.

My 2000 civic VTi is an Aerodeck ;)

Im loving that, it makes me want to get my arse in gear and sort my '89 Prelude out.

It looks like it could be the same colour as my Prelude actually, Melbourne Blue perchance?

Oh Oh! A Gen-1 Aerodeck!

I've got one of those! Stuck in my Mum's french country garden (they emigrated, turned their back on Blighty they did)

It's languishing though and need repatriating.

No there is no Turbo. But you do get Pop=Up Headlights!

Mine's not the carb one like that one but the EXi injected jobbie with Autobox.

They drive well, them. Lovely solid Japanese steering feel.

Proper Japanese HONDA too - built at the Sayama plant - not one of those tinny Swindon efforts made by Engrish types :P

Th main reason for not getitng it sorted is the missus has made it pretty clear she is not liking it.

Excellent- weird-looking (in a good way) yet really practical and reliable! Pure class.

What a superb car for a daily driver. Like a Volvo 480, but reliable. Great purchase - I love that generation of Accord, and the Aerodeck is the best looking of the bunch.

Posted

Great buy! I can only echo the sentiments above, looks really good and it's a car I've always found rather appealing. It's the sort of thing I'd happily buy as random 3rd/4th car, old enough to put onto my classic policy. Even the older Accords I had were very slick with a well-engineered feel, I can only imagine this to enhance that even further.

I saw one in Ipswich a couple of weeks ago, certainly geting rare out in the wild.

I think the previous-gen Accord 3dr I had came from John Cooper's.

My grandparents neighbours used to have one of these, and in the late 90's my perfect Japanese trifecta would have been Aerodeck, Integra, Prelude. If they made an Aerodeck V6 that would have been pretty much my bestest retro Honda of evar.

Posted

Always liked these Aerodecks. Looking at these once again they have something of a 'Civic XL' about them.

I really wanted my dad to get one of these as he had an appreciation of Hondas but he wouldn't buy anything that didn't have 2 rear doors. An Accord 4 door saloon would have been good but not quite as cool without the pop up headlights (the lucky Americans got the pop up lights on the saloons though  ).

Fack! I used to own this exact same model and they are well nice cars!

Such a good find, they are really nice and very rare to see one without crusty sills and arches, let alone such low mileage. Mine was scrapped in 2004 and even then it had 110k on the clock.

The radiators are rubbish, give it a flush out - theres a drain tap on them.

Engine and gearbox are really tough, as are the carbs but electronic autochoke known for being faulty. Injection models are almost all automatic.

Super light steering

I will have to ring you regarding this beast.

Hey, get in the queue!!

Cool photos even if it was on its last ever trip, looks like its the same colour too!

I noticed the vague steering on my brief drive (I actually thought there may be something wrong with it!) I'm hoping there wont be any choke problems as this one has a manual choke!
