After several months with not a lot happening, there has been a bit more movement in the fleet of late, so I thought I'd post an update.

You've all met the Solara, but I don't think another photo of it would hurt. I rather like this car - I have a feeling it may be joing the 164, Renner Six and Innocenti as a permanent member of the fleet. It just does everything so well. Here it is gleaming in this afternoon's sunshine.

I also bought a Beetle - not sure why, as I don't particularly like Beetles, but a mate had it up for sale and I bought it. I sold it on last week though, along with the VdP 1500 which was more trouble than it was worth.

I eventually decided that the LDV Convoy was just a little too slow and noisy to do any real distance in (I know, I know, I must be getting old... ) so I sold it on and replaced it with this. It's a short wheelbase but it has the bigger 2.8 engine (which is basically the Iveco Turbo Daily engine but sans turbocharger) which makes it much more relaxed to drive than a 1.9 TD, if not really any faster. It sits at 70-75 on the motorway quite happily though - it's only doing jsut over 3,000 revs at 70 so it's quite refined for a van. It does have the usual Ducato gearbox syndrome in the lower gears though, so I'm having to brush up on my double declutching skills.

I took this in PX for the LDV. It's a 1.8 on a V plate - it goes quite well if you thrash it, and grips like buggery with those silly great alloys, although it does tramline rather a lot on uneven surfaces. I'm trying to decide whether to sell it on or use it as a trackday car - I think it might be getting sold though as I'd prefer a little bit more power for trackdays.

I also bought this to trundle to work in while the Innocenti is taking a well deserved rest. It's a bog basic 954cc XN with a 4-speed gearbox - it doesn't even have a rear wiper. It's surprisingly nippy for such a small engine though, it's quite sensibly geared so it'll hold 70 without giving me earache, and it's bloody good on petrol. Handles quite well too for something on such skinny wheels (complete with original Pug trimz).

And I bought this to trundle to work on when it deigns to stop fugging raining for more than five minutes. It's a Yamaha Aerox, and it's 100cc so just about up to the 15-mile commute - 50mph is about it, but that's fast enough to avoid being a traffic hazard. It does 70mpg, too, which is nice.

This is my most recent purchase - picked it up yesterday from near Didcot. I bought it from the elderly gent who'd owned it since new and put 223,000 miles on the clock. His wife had recently died so he'd taken over her 52-plate Polo to keep costs down, and wasn't using the Scimitar enough to justify keeping it. It's far from immaculate, but it's a genuine car which hasn't been messed around with, which is a bonus in my eyes. It has its share of issues - fuel gauge doesn't work and it jumps out of second gear - but it's perfectly useable (I did 250 miles in it yesterday), hasn't overheated as yet and in overdrive fourth is quite relaxed at 70. The engine pulls well too, and holds 60psi oil pressure when driving - not bad for an Essex with nearly quarter of a million miles on the clock. It has a couple of refinements I wasn't expecting, too, like intermittent wipers and an electric aerial. Turning circle is shit though.

I've also put down a deposit on this. I accidentally won it when I put a "watching" bid on it on eBay and nobody else bid. It wasn't stupidly cheap, but I was expecting it to make more, as was the seller. I've always liked this shape of Beemer, and it's tax exempt too (despite the N plate). I should be picking it up next weekend, so there will be a fuller report once it's home.

And that's it for now.

Epic stuff! and you bought that BMW!, I was interested in that as well, The video on ebay the guy done of it driving around the yard was great, Very jealous!

Just checked the listing again, what a bargain, I was expecting it to fetch a lot more!

Good grief. Quite a catch up! Loving the Scimitar - must be a very late one on a B. ScimitarWeb if you haven't already discovered it is quite handy and is open to non club members.

Beemer looks shit hot too, though I guess the Solara is probably the biggest win there. Wonderful car. Sadly I failed to convinced my other half that it was a good motor to buy - yet for some reason she did agree that the BX was a good idea! She's as odd as me...

that solara always makes my willy go stiff

I'll come back to this thread when I've got some fapping time, but for the moment I want to say jolly well done :D

Scimitar electrics are quite 'interesting';we had a lot of fun finding the electric windows fuse in ours. Main problem is inadequate earthing

Lovely collection - I love the BMW, I had a 1972 2500 with manual transmission. Was a great car if a bit thirsty with the tripple carbs..

Who's been a busy boy?

Pick for me has to be the E3 - such a good-looking car. Although the Ducato looks good too - as I spent last weekend with a 60-plate Transit LWB (RWD so GR8 4 DRIFTIN) I can appreciate a good van.

Ah yes. DO make sure the fuel pipe to the carburettor is very secure. Give it a good tug. Doesn't matter so much if you spill petrol over a cold engine, but you don't really want it happening if you're driving!

Jesus, you have done well. That Alfa especially looks right tasty.

That Scimitar is lovely. Also a fan of the 156, and can concur on the level of grip and cornering fun. Love Mrs Sporty's Sportwagon, although we have now bowed to the fact that it's going to have to go when we get back off holiday.

In conclusion, Wuv=shite leg-end

Edit, how could I forget to mention that BMW. GR23.78 4 Norm-baiting

Look forward to seeing one of them at The Angel next month. Or quite possibly something you don't even know about yet...

Epic. Just epic.

All of the above please. Pug XN especially.

The E3 is stunning. But for God's sake ditch the front number plate. I know it's illegal but at the moment the bigger crime is against style. The Bauhaus inspried cleanliness of line and purity of adornment is ruined by the sill piece of plastic stuck on the nose. "It fell off, officer" is all you need to say. Anyway the way the chromium at the same time, which is an oxymoron I know, accentuates and softens the sharp edges is second to none. That really is the epitome of Teutonic style. I want it.

Anyway; good work with the Ducato. I'd forgotten all about them. I'm sure it's great for carrying crates of Sicilian lemons.

The Alfa is another one I've thought about recently. I've started buying Car Mechanics magazine and reading about diagnostic stuff. They've got a similar 156 1.8 TS and it's a car that has aged well. I never thought much about them at the time; but they have matured and now seem more desirable once older. I am aware I sound like a school-boy who fancies his teacher (I was not many years ago).

The 106 is probably a good choice.

That plate is a bit of a eye sore, I think a set of nice black and silver plates with raised lettering would look ideal on it and finish it of perfectly and being a 1972 model they should be legal as well.

'72 N reg? WTF Trig?

Posted

It is a '72 model - it was originally registered overseas and imported here in 1974. Trig, it will be getting black'n'sliver plates in short order (I like them on a car this age, even if some people don't), and the front one will be mounted a lot lower. Or just shoved in the windscreen, one or t'other.

Ah, I missed that bit.

My dad had an N reg 2500 for a while just like that one. I have supermegalustings for a 3.3 Li.
