...........wasn't there a Clio or something with MTV logos?

Speaking of which, Southern region Ford Dealers had a Fiesta Meridian to sell in 1993, to tie in with the new ITV company for the south, Meridian, starting up - I think there may still be one or two of those around, though I haven't seen one since 1994!

I have a confession: the Polo Harlequin's partly my fault. VW sent round some sales blurb (presumably because I'd bothered a salesman about buying a car, and been daft enough to leave my address), and tacked on the back of it, was a competition to win something if I chose their next spec-ed Polo.

There was the Harlequin, one with a fabric roof, and a couple of others. For sheet'n'giggles I picked the Harlequin as my 1st choice, the fabric roof as 2nd and so on, reasoning that there was no way in a month of Sundays they'd build that. I nearly died laughing when I first saw one. They also did build the 2CV roll-back fabric roof one iirc; what was that called?

I'll also confess that I helped create a series. I used to work at Halley's Garage, just outside Glasgow: the general manager, Ralph Halley, announced that he'd bought a job lot of bog-basic Novas from Vauxhall for peanuts, and could we spec-ed them, please?

As I recall, there were about 50 in total; half white, half sky blue. I did suggest mixing the doors up, like panda cars of yore, but Ralph ordered sticker sets from a local printer with 'Halstar' on them. See what he did there? So very clever. We got a job lot of suitable stripe tape from Brown Bros, and a jumbo order of floormats/wheeltrims/mudflaps from Luton. And thus the Nova Halstar was born. Flogged off to the unsuspecting public for slightly less than a boggo Nova, they must have been a nice little earner for the Halley family!

My personal favourite wasn't a car tho': a few years back, DAF and Alpine teamed up to produce a spec-ed 95 Space Cab tooled up with quality audio. With the volume anywhere near full, it was not unlike driving a small nightclub. Only with much less distortion.

Ive got a real treat for all you Polo Harlequin fans did you know one features as the main car in a music video?

Richie Kavanagh - No More Beer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXjhG0TFLCM

He also likes Bedford vans, Richie Kavanagh - Fagan's Chipper Van http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3sRzW1i4Ws

Your probably wondering where I found these well believe it or not they are played on the juke box all the time in my local pub (no I don't put them on), I guess thats the kind of music people want to listen to in tiny Welsh towns in 2011.

I remember that, I joined in too. I voted for the Polo Classic (the saloon, in retrospect, hideous).

Didn't win owt, mind.

Not exactly shite but..............

My Micra is a Micra 'Ally' edition. Not entirely sure if its supposed to be a special edition as such. But from what I can garner, the Ally only seems to have only lasted through the issue of 'S' prefixes. They are pretty shitly specced, no p/s on some Allys, no leccy windows, no cigar-lighter. It came with a boot spoiler, wheel trims and a name badge. The only difference between my Micra and some other Micra models is the 'Ally' name badge glued to the tailgate.

I have tried up-speccing my car by adding Micra floor mats, rear Nissan made parcel shelf with speakers, sun shade with mirrors, cigar lighter and more recently a boot light (without much luck)

As I understand it, some Ally models came with power steering. Mine didnt. Thanks Nissan.

I love those Harlequins! I'd have one in a shot.

There's a few mk2 Escorts like the Harrier and Linnet, but not really autoshite. Also 'Capital' tie in with radio station!

Quite rare, at 10. Not that I'd want one in yellow. Mondeo Citrine:

Granada Chausseure Estate - lovely colour!

Cough - fighter pilot.

He only played tennis in his spare time.

Always thought the tennis association as the badge had 'French Open' on it.

Some beautifully shite Special Editions there.

My first car was a Clio MTV. Except somebody had already raped it of it's MTV CD Player so actually it was just an RT model with ridiculous badges on the side and alloy wheels from a Renault Scénic Fidji.

That BX Buffalo is my favourite one so far. I'm guessing it was never a UK model?

My aunt had a Citroen AX Salsa. Kitted out with typically 90s French stickers and a seat fabric so busy it made you feel ill. Shit.

I really like the Seat Marbella Jeans, complete with denim upholstery. I 've always thought it perfectly matches the ethos of a no-nonsense car like the Marby.

Re: the early 1990s Polo Genesis & Golf Rolling Stones, I believe that there was also a Polo 'Pink Floyd' model which must have came out at the same time as Floyd's 'Division Bell' album in 1994.

Really, what was it VW's marketing department and rock bands that had past their sell by date by the late 1980s? I think an early 1970s VW Beetle or Passat 'Genesis' would have been much cooler. 8) But just like the music maybe not a commercial success.

CJ, I suspect you've just answered two questions of mine - what the Hallstar was, and that I DO need to go photograph the M-reg Mk3 Astra Hallstar which is getting washed and polished every single Saturday I pass it on the 6...

A certain forumite's wife *cough* won a Polo Genesis in a competition. She was presented with it at the Genesis gig at Knebworth in August 1992. Had the band's autographs on the bonnet, protected by clear lacquer. Lasted a year before being sold on to buy bigger car to house expanding family!

Wasn't he the man who invented the interruptor mechanism that allowed the guns to fire between the propellor blades?, the Germans captured his plane and copied the idea.

What about the Peugeot 205 Denim, with the jeans like interior and labels sticking out of the seats.

Not really a shite car, but certainly a shite special edition...the Paul Smith Mini:

Bar the (rather nice) colours and a Paul Smith emblazonment on the dials, I think it was otherwise completely standard.

I remember my then-local Ford dealer (Malcolm Waite in Sandwich) selling those. I recall that they were available in metallic blue and metallic red:

1987 Fiat Panda 1000 CL Solar. by bramm77, on Flickr

Here is another unusual Panda SE, this being known as the Polar. I belive quite a few Fiats at the time were sold with this name bolted on, I think the full length sunroof came as standard, the black tape however, did not. There is two left on the road, including this one.

Dealer editions are often a bit weirder, I came across a Bluebird Flair yesterday, it looked a bit... normal.

And here's another:

Speedwell Special.... by bramm77, on Flickr

This was on the side of an Uno, but does anyone remember the Uno Breeze? Quite possibly the best looking Uno ever made, and I think it was the only MKI model with body coloured bumpers?

I have googled but can find no pictures. Metro moritz, based on the mk 1 metro, all were silver with snazzy red graphics depicting a skier i think. They came with a matching holdall / sports bag which a friend of mine still has and uses.
