then travelled 190 miles in this (qwertys stop-gap car)

IM038222.jpg

saddleworth

IM038223.jpg

18 aston martins on the M62 they seemed to be in some sort of a race

IM038229.jpg

through the rain a door number with ' Kroymans Isle of man tour 17th-22nd june' could be seen

IM038227.jpg

info here; http://www.powerbeautysoulmates.nl/2011 ... n-martins/

arrived at Blurton (i told qwerty thats where all the blurt lives) at about 2.30pm and had to wait until 3.45 for the giffers to return from line dancing. While the owners were not around i used my zephyr door key to get in the car, in the boot and have a poke around it - all looked good

boot full of free spares (3 new tyres, exhaust, bumoper end caps etc)

IM038230s.jpg

original window sticker ( i have the 1979 bill of sale too)

IM038231a.jpg

new exhaust fitted august 1983

IM038232.jpg

genuine giffer-spec nodding dog

IM038233.jpg

unmolested interior (was given the original ford radio too)

IM038234.jpg

The car has been in the family for 29 years (bought as a 3 year old car with 14k miles on the clock), now sporting 66K genuine miles (i have the FSH), unleaded conversion, original toolkit, krooklock etc etc

the trade in to buy it in 1982 was a Marina ORF622L

dvla says:

Year of Manufacture Not Available

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1275CC

IM038237a.jpg

IM038236a.jpg

IM038235a.jpg

so, with everything tikkitieboo i set off up the M6

this pic from cumbria end

IM038240.jpg

and as its the solstice, popped in to see Long Meg

IM038241a.jpg

it was just before i climbed Hartside Pass that i noticed a distinct lack of brakes and by the time i had reached the top, no brakes at all

so i slowly drove home, not taking any more photos or reaching fourth gear, while clenching my buttocks and applying handbrake and slipped clutch to slow down

and so for one more night im driving this

Wonderous.

Excellent, well done! That's quite some road trip. Thanks for thinking of us on your journey; much appreciated.

Which joker has been playing with the rattle-cans?

... While the owners were not around i used my zephyr door key to get in the car...

Excellent stuff - I recall an ex-colleague of mine turned up at work with a Y-reg 2.0 Cortina. One of the odd job men who does work in the garage drove in, saw it, parked his car and walked into the kitchen, removed a fork from the drawer, went to the workbench and got working.

Time taken for George to get the Cortina driving round the yard, from parking his car via making a starting impliment with a fork, whilst causing no damage to the car...

... fifty seven seconds.

Charlie was not impressed and invested heavily in anti theft equipment shortly thereafter...

now i have to decide if im dropping in the 2.8, 5-speed, alloys and blue ghia interior or leaing it giffer spec and tooling around with a biege tanktop and crimpalene slacks from greenwoods whilst smoking st. bruno from a Peterson Irish Sea Briar Pipe

least it will keep the milage low

Looks like a cracking purchase! Any rot in the usual Cortina areas?

Posted

Great pictures, good purchase, definately would like one oneday.

Personally I say leave it as it is!

Great pictures, good purchase, definitely would like one one day.

Personally I say leave it as it is!

I agree with all of the above. Would be a shame to upgrade it, though working brakes would probably be a good thing!

a-posts look good, sills have been replaced, inner sills good, boot floor very good, front jacking points intact and good, floor pan waxoiled every year since new, rear wheel arches good, inner rear archs excellent, no sunroof so little rot in the scuttles

i couldnt be arsed doing anything with it today as its lashing down with rain and ive been awake since half threee this morning, more pics tomorrow

This looks wonderfully miserable. Definitely leave as-is. Superb Shite skills here.

Great stuff Autofive, look like a nice buy there. When I first saw the pics, I thought the car looked like it should have Ghia-spec alloys, but as its a 1.6L and the wheels look in fine condition anyway, I say leave as is.

Posted

It's awesome as it is! It's identical to the one my uncle had in the early 90s.

Posted

What a superb car! If it were mine, I'd leave it completely standard, as the L model is super rare nowadays :)

Posted

You absolutely have to leave it totally stock. Please. It is possibly rarer than all the high spec motors... fewer survived because most were company bought and trashed by 8 years old. This is a rare survivor. I'd certainly keeep it totally original. You wanna swap for a Sapphire and a Scorpio? (anyone spot a theme here?)

Giffer spec is the way forward... flat cap, pipe and pack of wethers Orgs in the glove box. That is style...

This is very nice! I notice the master cylinder's off it, reminds me of the time when I was learning to drive in dad's 1.6 Crusader estate and the pedal started sinking to the floor going up the old Loch Lomond road. Dad gave me a bollocking for not slowing down for the bends enough - the wipers were on double speed - but when he took over to go up the little track to "get" some free slates, he nigh-on shat himself. He then told me I'd have to pump the pedal for the return journey. Bendix master cylinder on that, come to think of it. Pop didn't like having to shell out for pistons as well as seals...

Posted

i changed the servo and master cylinder today, i now have brakes again

Lovely find! happy0034.gif

I smoked about in it's twin in (iirc) '94, mine was a sterile version which I left on Highgate Hill.

Posted

Looks like it's still got the black plastic caps that cover the wheelnuts .I say leave it giffer spec.

Probably the first time it's been out of Blurton in years and the first time the brakes have been used in anger.I should think that's what buggered the seals.Glad to see it's fixed already.

Nice story!

I agree it should stay standard....too many base models disappear through apparent lack of desirability.

Keep the nodding dog too. That's class!

Every reps home in 1980, it's an early Mk5 as well on a V.

Looks lovely - I would keep it stock if it were mine.

Posted

it is an early one, build date is august 1979, the first month of mk5 production, so has no holes in the front valance (a mk4 front valance), different servo and master cylinder, mk4 starter motor, mk4 door lock buttons

later mk5 on the right

IM038260.jpg

IM038255.jpg

unfortunately, front door cards have been holed

IM038267.jpg

and I had a look in the boot

bottom of the sparewheel well looks bubbling, and the panel above the silencer has been waxoiled, suggesting that bubbled too, O/S looks good

wrapped in a Michellin bag, was the spare wheel,

close up on the only remaining sticker

i'm beginning to think this car needs new front shockers, and a carb tune. front tie bar bushes are rotting too.
