More shite bought and Primera for sale

Latest shite, bought yesterday to take care of the 320 mile weekly round trip to Glasgow I'm having to do. Bit dull but it's mint! 62k from new, 11 months MOT, full main stealer history and four new tyres for £400 off ebay. I was the only bidder.... seems no one wants Primeras no matter how tidy.

Drives as new with not a rattle or even a squeak, and actually its pretty decent to lug about in. I'm chuffed!

I can't really pick any fault with it, drove all the way back to Aberdeen from Berwick without breaking a sweat.

Aye it was a bargain. Looks much, much better in the metal than it did in his auction pics. there is literally not a mark on it. I'd had my eye on Mr Bolllox's cavalier but the cost of going to get it in Crewe and running it back up to Aberdeen on top of buying it made it over budget so I fired a bid in on this. It's only had a couple of owners all its days but then passed through a few hands in the last couple of months as no one knew what to do with it. It nearly got weighed in apparently!!

this was the auction

Even has the original dealer sticker and tax disc holder and the thank you letter and bill of sale from when it was new. Anything I need to look out for on these?

Done wll there. Ran a few of these in the past and despite being dull (as you rightly pointed out) they're actually a half decent and reliable old bus. Was told the Achille's heel was 5th gear giving up the ghost but never had any bother with the ones I had.

£400 seems like damned good money for such a tidy, useable car.

TBH, at that money if you have to throw it away/weigh it in you’re not going to lose a lot are you? I sold our facelift 2.0 estate cheap with a short MoT as a few things simultaneously cropped up on it (main one being the MAF sensor) but otherwise it was a nice car. Certainly capable of decent economy when it was running OK.

If you’re desperate for help/bits, Antdat (possibly at Prestwick?) is very helpful. He knows them inside-out. He’s on several other forums, I can get you his contact details if you ever need anything.

Bargain. That's a really well-cared for car right there :)

Nice in a dull but reliable and still plenty-of-life left in kind of way, I'd imagine it'll be good on fuel and well screwed together, so it won't set your heart pounding with excitement but sometimes you to get need to get to where you're going to and back with minimal amount of fuss and maximum amount of mpg.

Looks like you got a great bargain there, low mileage, good condition and I like the colour. Thumbs up.

I nearly bought one of these a few years ago when I just wanted some dull yet reliable wheels, I couldn't quite bring myself to buy it but then it was about two and hald grand at the time rather than in the hundreds. Who's going to be first to mention driveshafts then? me?

Its a Turbo Diesel version and is very acceptable to drive, the ride is pretty smooth and it can certainly pull when needs be, not that driving in Brussles will gve you much of a chance. Its a great car, I do like them.

bloody hell. 400 pounds for this is a total steal!

Can't go much wrong with a Nissan! [/biased] :D

That looks a great buy! :D

Have to admit I used to like these when I saw them about, and the Mk 1s. Out of curiosity I did an eBay search and this was top of the list:

Apart from a scuffed front bumper I can't see much wrong... leather, air, usw. Taxed till July, long MOT. £500 and no bids with 9 hours left...

Mark.

Although it shouldn't really add any value, seeing original trims, numberplates and other bits really do make a car that bit more desirable. Top work!

I quite like these. I had a turbo diesel one which did lose 5th gear, and the turning circle on them is rubbish, but other than that they're quite a pleasant thing to buzz about in.

Posted

Fuggin hell that black one didnt pull a single bid despite having tax til july and a ticket til january 2012.

Amazes me as it looks a good package - good colour, leather, air con, mega reliable, decent on the juice, taxed and tested yet not worth 500 quid! Sheesh. Why does no one want them? is it just the lack of coolness factor?

When I've been looking about for a car for the last few weeks I was finding it really hard to get ANYTHING half way decent around the 500 quid mark - so I'm surprised these seem to fetch the square root of bugger all

They're great cars, shame they never shook off the minicab image

doesn't seem to have done the octavia any harm, but nice buy for the cash.

Went to the local auction last night and came away with another turd:

Mine for £160 with six months test (but no rent). I need a diesel as the fuel costs to run up and down between Aberdeen and Glasgow twice a week are crippling me. Lucas pump on this so no straight veg oil but I've found a local place doing proper biodiesel 2 miles up the road for £1.10 a litre which they take quite happily.

Seems fine too - Its got a sticky gearshift which I assume is down to the linkage needing lubricated and the bootlid has been painted by Stevie Wonder but for £160?? If it lasts a month running on bio I'm laughing,

Only major worry is the timing belt - theres no mention of it having had one and its sitting on 131k. I had a quick look and its a genuine Ford belt which suggests its been there a long time but the belt itself actually looks OK - whats the change interval on these?

So the Primera is up for sale if anyone's interested? Its got about 9 months test but no tax, a full history and 70k on the clock. Its pretty much mint and utterly reliable. I've been knocking up 500 plus miles a week in it and it does the job without complaint every time.

needs a set of brake pads and the front pipe of the exhaust replacing which I'll do before it goes. Shiters price is what I paid for it - £400 if anyone's interested. Car is in Aberdeen but I can bring it down to Fife or Glasgow.

A very good point. Is it perhaps that VAG stuff has a better perceived image overall than Nissans?

The P10s and P11s were great to drive. Hirst had a P10 eGT and it was great fun. The P12s were a bit shit. They put on too much weight and relied on the same engines to punt them around.

East tullos industrial estate - about 150 yards from where I work which is handy. its on Greenwell Road.. you get the stuff straight from the pump as well which saves standing in makro's car park balancing a 20 litre veg oil drum and a funnel.

Filled it up there today and its supping it happily.

Nice Escort. Pity about the wrong alloys , but never mind…! For £160, you can’t go wrong, especially for a diesel.

The boxes in these are usually pretty slick. The ‘sticky’ gearshift is indeed more than likely down to lack of lubrication on the linkage. It’s not something I’d be worried about and should be a simple enough fix.

I know on MK5’s, the timing belt change (on early petrols anyway) is every 30k / three years. I’ve done this with mine and never had an issue. They’re about £70-odd from Ford if you go the ‘whole hog’.

The 1.8TD’s in later Escorts were from the Mondeo. If memory serves me these were done on intervals of around five years / 80k – but don’t quote me on it. If you were planning on keeping it, I would be tempted to do the whole kit –bearings and tensioner also.

It looks just like an MSG6 that does. Ere' are you sure your'e not......no, wait there isn't a diseasal in the "new" range of kit car specials from there, if indeed it is a diseasal.

Great buy by the way, i prefer the Carina myself, more local to me.....

great cars I had a Mk1 facelift Primera Sport + Estate - top of the range - they only sold a handful of the Sports + in estate form - had all the toys and went like shit off a shovel - didn't drink much gas and handled brilliantly - was on 150k when some scrote nicked it

Belt change on that Endura D is 70k miles for the post 98MY cars.

The timing belts on those engines are notorious for failing early, I'd get it changed as soon as possible, it isn't a difficult job for a transverse FWD engine.

I think for overall running costs you'd be better off in the Primera, I think the Escort could end up being a moneypit.

Posted

Do the injector pump belt at the same time!, Mine snapped once and that was a real PITA, I guess those Mondeo Zetec alloys are worth a bit of coin on there own as well.

Longer term yep there's no question the Primera is the better bet. Its in great condition and they are good cars anyway, but its costing me £60 to do the drive to the weeg at least once a week, sometimes more often.. the crudfest escort (providing it doesnt break) should do a lot better than that.

The plan with the escort is to run it short term while i build up a bit of cash to by a decent MG ZT which is what im really fancying at the moment. I cant see me owning it beyond about 3 months, although i will rack up a fair bit of mileage in that time.

Have given it a good look over today - Its a bit shit. - Mechanically it seems pretty good, but theres a shedload of bodgery on the bodywork and its pretty rusty underneath. I reckon theres another MOT in it, but that will be its last.

since its only costing £160 I'll do the timing belt and just run it till it breaks / i see a cheap ZT i fancy / the test runs out then I'll weigh it in.

The scrappy is still paying £180 odd afaik and i can punt on the wheels (which have all good uniroyals on them) for £60 or so and it has the 6000 CD player in it which I'll get £40 - 50 for on fleabay, so i cant really lose.

Changed the oil air and fuel filters today and its got a full tank of pikey biodiesel so I'll run about in it for a week or so and see how it does before i punt on the Primera so i have a fallback.
