These are what I would have had then, had I been who I am now..... and my Wife would have been 23! Phwooar!

 

I passed my test in 1984.

1979 Escort Ghia! (5 year old Focus)

1944 Quad (Land Rover didn't exist until 1948.) (40 year old Land Rover)

Difficult this one. 1934 Latil! (50 year old Land Rover)

1968 Zodiac Ececutive! (16 year old Scorpio Ultima)

1963 Cortina base spec! (21 year old base model Sapphire)

I passed my test 21 years ago, so my 1989 sierra sapphire would be a 1968 cortina instead. OK. fine. My 1968 cortina would then be a 1947 prefect? 10? I don't know! aaagh! my brain hurts.

I think it's the car you drive now, what the equivalent car would be when you passed your test. So in my case 17yr old Jag now, so a 17yr old Jag in '88 would have been a 1971 model.

 

There's another 'pointless google images thread' (®Mr L. Hatred) down there with what's the equivalent now for what you had then. So the Mk4 Cortina I had when I passed would be a Mondeo if I passed now... or something.

Your Escort would surely be something like a Popular - Small basic family Ford that gained a huge following for aftermarket tuning and had success in saloon car racing, but in later life was often striped down and its mechanical components used to build cheap GRP kit cars....

They really were excellent. My dad called them a "French Jag," in fact.

It is strange that they struggled to sell them but the depreciation was truly horrible.
