Nice. Looks a good car under the moss. Heroic tyre changing .You'd not get me doing that- set of snotters for me.. Brakes freed off Ok then?

Economically, its not going to make you rich -but it'll be a pleasant tool to waft in.

Well done both. Audi looks ace.

As always, brakes were a bit stiff to start with, but after 200 miles you can push it along with your little finger!!

950kg apparently an avenger estate, not bad.

Nice save. I can't remember the last time I saw an Avenger estate on the road, my Dad had a blue estate in 1985/86 MVY 834T.

GR13 work Bo11z & LT. Did you get some sneaky papparazzi-style shots of the other rammle in the fella's yard then? Looks like some great stuff there, I love those old Sunbeam-Talbots

This was a great day out, I think every shiter should have a few adventures doing stuff like this. I have to admit, I was a bit dubious about the condition of an Avenger thats sat outside for 5+ years but this one really is good. I can't imagine it will need a huge amount of work to see it roadworthy, bodywise atleast.

Watching Bol swap those tyres was amazing. Its deffo not something I would try miles away from home but he's got it down to a fine art. Infact Bol was so fast at it I couldn't get the tyres blown up and back on the car quick enough!

At first I thought the thread was about like, the greatest pop group EVAH...

..but my disappointment was made up for by your EPIC save! Any Chrysler Avenger is a winner in my book!

Looks like that will clean up lovely, actually! :P

Well impressed with the fact that it isn't a rotbox, must have been permanently garaged before it ended up in that yard.

I like the "baloney to swage lines" pinstripe, but I've quoted this picture mainly to ask what the HELL that duck thing is in the corner.

Also with regards to the torn seats, just hide them under some beaded seat covers. Hope you manage to get some proper driving action out of it, seems a shame for you to get a lot of cars into good nick and only really get to drive them to the MOT and back!

Great stuff Bollox, a super read as always 8)

Reg no on that silver Maestro looks familiar but I can't think where from.

You guys are mega winners in my book. Thanks for the story too, lovely motor. 8)

It's an ex-Austin Rover press car. It's not the MG Maestro Turbo prototype though :( that was a dark blue one, D786 POF.

Apparently this Avenger est had spent some if its life in Spain, which may explain the GR9 condition of the bodywork.

I had an Avenger estate - 1.6 GLS on a V plate. Went like the clappers thanks to a pokey engine and short gearing, and handled well too once you got over the vague steering. That one looks like a good 'un from the pics - they all seem to go grotty on the front wings and front edge of the bonnet, but apart from that it looks like it's survived its 5 years in the open pretty well.

Great save, Mr. B :D

The Chrysler-badged Avenger will always have a place in my heart, as I have fond memories of my father's white 1977 1.6 saloon, which was sourced by his mate from Canterbury Car Auctions in spring 1982 after his 1972 Viva fell to bits. It was an ex-Sussex Police area car (a fact betrayed by the zip in the headlining and a vinyl roof covering the hole in the centre of the rood where the police light once went) and was really quick; I recall him driving up the A12 at over 100mph in the car on the way to our summer holidays in Clacton (Mmmm!...Butlins!) not long after he took possession of it ;)

Sadly, he reversed it into a concrete bollard at his workplace in early 1983, which destroyed the rear end. He replaced it with a 1981 Austin Mini Metro 1.0L, which was a truly hateful contrivance.

Awesome trip and rescue. I struggle to change tyres inside with tyre levers, so impressive work doing it in a field.

Fantastic save! I was worried after i posted it on the ebay thread that it would turn out to be more then shite i.e shit, But amazingly it looks like it's pretty pucker!

I can't wait to read about your recommisioning of it and epic work on that tire changing skillz bo1sbury!

I like how the kitchen looks out on to the yard, presumably perfect for winding up Mrs LOX when it's stuffed full of the latest old rammel and she's trying to wash the pots or something.

Excellent save there, I am more than surprised that the bodywork was not shot to pieces underneath! Looks like that place had quite a few gems about too, although I doubt they will be as lucky as the Avenger.

Jolly amusing, well done both of you. Makes my half an hour of mucking about with cable ties, gaffer tape and sticky-back plastic and putting a new battery onto the Camry before bringing it home seem a rather humble experience.

My mum looked at a green Avenger estate circa 1984, but it didn't get the nod. I remember us going out for a test drive in it.

MM, try the view from my bedroom then...

Mrs Ramrod has not been best pleased to look out over this for the last 18 months, especially as it's become further and further stripped...

Heroic work, Mr B and Tim!

Fuggin hell man, I struggle to get the inner tube out of my bike with spoon handles but changing an Avenger's wheels in an Essex field is something else. Must be a relief that it was sound though - I can't imagine the pain of seeing the thing disintegrate through the rear view mirrors as it was being towed along.

Qualzorz etc. :D A good days work indeed. I also look forward to seeing the resurrection.

Is that a Jowett under the cover next to the Sunbeam?

Posted

GR10.5 road trip there Mr Bollox!

Hat duly tipped for the old-school onsite 4-wheel tyre change too. I remember having to do this on HGV tyres, except it took 3 blokes to do 1 wheel!

I'm looking forward to seeing the resurrection thread/pics.

If you are ever near Glasgow, the Museum of Transport has a mint blue Avenger Estate, I think its BSC 854W or something. Think its to do with the Linwood connection of the area.

Posted

IIRC all Chrysler Avengers were built at Linwood, the tooling being shipped up when the facelift happened.

Top quality shite collecting skills, and am very impressed with the tyre replacement.

I'm clearly in danger of becoming one of those 'actually I think you'll find...' type guys, but actually I think you'll find that's another Sunbeam-Talbot 90 but in saloon flavour. My Jowett spotting skillzorz are ACES so I'm sure it's not one of them.
