Was talking to a bloke t'other day and he was halfway through beautifying (if that's the right word) one of these:

nissan_figaro_front.jpg

I had to make my excuses and leave, to be honest, I just don't see the attraction. There seems to be quite a lot round these parts, possibly because they seem to come in by the boatload through Tilbury docks, but prices seem high, for something which is frankly ugly, impractical and of unknown provenance. Anyone want to disagree? Are they shite or shit?

I totally agree, you have inspired me....

Now do us all a favour and stop talking shit and actually post some shite.

Haven't you just defined Autoshite there?????? :D

Surely the provenance of Autoshite should be "undesirable"?

"Unknown" still leaves a slight possibility of it being good.

As for cars I don't get, how about the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet?

NissanMuranoCC.jpg

A niche version of a niche product, surely?

If this tread takes off, I expect Nissan to figure heavily.

I don't really get the majority of 90's Mercs, I wouldn't turn my nose up at one, but they just don't do a thing for me. And dashboard looks like a dressing table, reminds me of the ones in the Saab 9000's.

Also, a lot of old Austins from the 60's, and Morris Minors.

Nope, I have to disagree with you there. Old Austins are GR8, Morris Minors are shit

I know about 15 women who'd all kill for a Figaro, but who won't pay the mad money they fetch. At the end of the day they're just a better looking, less practical Micra.

I don't 'get' Audi TTs, MGBs, FWD Vauxhalls, BMW Xs, Audi Qs (but I quite like fast quattros), most diesels, FWD Rovers, Jap or economy cars.

I only slightly get the whole cabrio thing.

Underneath its a golf, add a stupid body, with less room inside and charge more money ... How about just buying a golf instead? or the equivalent Seat/Skoda for less money.

Original Beetles too, horrible.

I'm sure I have defined Autoshite in a way, but we all choose our shite with some affection if you like, ie Mr Lobsta likes his R4 van, Pog loves Metros (!) and Keef loves landcrabs.

I'm talking about stuff, under the "cult" banner in some ways, "Autoshite" in other ways that I don't see the attraction of, that seems to be popular with others.

Hope you get my drift.

Aircooled VW campers and Mk2 Jags (much prefer an S-type or Mk10 myself :) ).

VW Beetles have plastic cappings on the door trims to simulate the exposed painted metal that the original had. That baffles me.

I don't get Beetles old and new, or any VW really; most of the so-called "desirable" cars of the last 20 years or so; "supercars" with the exception of Aston Martin V8s (1980s shape); the universal love for the Morris Minor; BMW Minis which are anything-but; most FWD, and certainly on big cars; "Tesco Tanks" that never see mud and couldn't cope if they did.

I'm sure it's very reliable and practical but it sums up blandness in one picture.

The moast uninspired piece of design since the Vectra B.

5 seat MPVs. What do they do that the estate version doesn't?

Better access for the kiddywinks and popular with old and disabled people because they're easy to get into I think.

Makes spotting shit drivers easier too.

I don't "get" all the pseudo off roaders that are basically bloated jacked up estates not always fitted with four wheel drive, but I'm fond of the Rover Streetwise. I'm all messed up.

Drove one of these recently helping a car trading friend out and it was one of the most horrible cars I have had the misfortune to drive. I expect a Tata Nano to be better  But being a small car they sell well......why?

Horrifically ugly, shit, rattly engines and all the appeal (to me) of a white dog turd.

I drive a few of these quite regularly. They're as uninspiring to drive as they are to look at . The ones I drive are top spec ones and they're still spectacularly dull. Nothing at all about them that will make someone grin. They're competent, they do the job, and they're fairly reliable, but they're not good at anything other than being a minicab.

They do ride reasonably well, and they're ok for motorway work, but they're no fun at all. Ever. Far better than a Vectra, but still shite.

They handle superbly though, much better than anything else that size that I can think of.

Utter fucking rubbish. A triumph of marketing over engineering, especially when the arse axle is held on by a bit of welding the size of a pea. If I go to heaven (doubtful) I shall get to destroy Novas with a Carl Gustav for eternity. What pisses me off is that it was NEARLY good. My mate had bust his arm and needed me to take his Nova 1.2 Sting to the MOT. There was a mix up on the time, and I had to really be on the pace to make it. I ragged the bosoms off that thing on the B road to Larne, nice little zing off the engine. BUT: let down by shit suspension geo, terrible brakes and bad overall dynamics. Someone at GM thought "that'll do" rather than "let's tweak it" All the bits were there, but they put it out shit.

When I had my R6 Metro GTa 8v, it pissed all over my mate's Nova 1.4 SRi

I can't speak for a Figaro specifically, but my Pao was epically crap, far far far too slow, uncomfortable, rattly, noisy, and none of it in a good way, just shit! I get them purely from a design and 'made because we could / wanted to' point of view, but dynamically mine was worse in every way than the K10 it was based on.

I don't get off road coupe styled things, and also folk that go out and buy an mpv at the first sign of a child. Just use a normal car!

Posted

To leap back to the start, I do 'get' the Figaro, I just find it massively disappointing to drive and a bit of a let down. Ideal for those who rate how a car looks ahead of absolutely any other attribute.

Smarts bother me a lot. I want to love them, but can't quite. I'd quite like to try the one that someone fitted a Mini engine/transmission to. A Cooper-tune Smart should be a laugh, and you get a proper gearbox!

What estate version? This is the problem, you almost can't buy an estate any more. You have to buy an MPV, 4x4 or crossover instead. Bummer. Estates can be so elegant, just look at a Mk3 Zephyr or Volvo 740.

Father Ted has beaten me to it!

As for the Prius, a car that averages worse fuel economy than most modern diesels and is marketed as being an eco car when it causes far more pollution and CO2 emissions in it's production than an ordinary car.

Bloody hell, I've just googled that - didn't know there was one on the way. Bloody ugly and 'handles like a Golf'. Bugger.

Ford are getthing things all wrong again, I can feel a slightly less dismal Mk5 Escort moment coming on.
