I'd like an escort, probably ratdat's one if I was going to have any, a 1600 4-dr ghia, I reckon i would probably love driving round in it. But, theyre well outta my price range so its just tough luck. The same appplies to Maserati Khamsins though and it doent get me down, I just crack on with my life.

You can keep your rwd escorts and your dollomite sprints, il have one of these thanks e21 323i

I had one. YAT153X. (Wish it had been YET153X though, that would have been a good plate).

The BMW feels more grown up, and the six pot is a lot smoother than the old Pinto lump. Nowhere near as much fun to drive as a Mk2 RS though.

I can't concur on that.....

I had a Mark 2 Mexico 20 odd years ago. I put a new Ford exchange 2 litre Pinto in it, Sierra gearbox, 3.89 diff, 2.8i Capri Billies and all the usual crap. It was alright but even back then it was nothing special and it was only ever a stepping stone to something better. My Mum's 1600 GTi Mark 1 was a far, far superior vehicle in every way. So was the RS1600i I replaced the Mark 2 with. So was a half decent 1500Ti Alfasud which would RUN RINGS around an old Escort on a proper downhill twisty in the wet.

I had an old 323i E21, a W plate shitbox with an LSD, yellow Bilsteins and a dogleg box. Compared to an old Escort with a 2 litre Cortina engine and a live rear axle it was kinda in a different league. That (in the day) was a fast, rather twitchy but very heroic bit of kit.

Mark 1 and 2 Escorts that sell for 10-20 grand plus are for those who are lacking somewhat in imagination. It was a a Ford Fucking Escort. Not a 911, a 308GTB, an E30 M3 or a three door Cosworth. A Ford Escort. So they won some rallies and stuff - so what?

In 1973 my Late Dad tried both a Mexico and an Avenger Tiger. he thought the Avenger was better in some areas and the handling was certainly as good. My Mum didn't like the boot spoiler however - even then the Tiger was a bit OTT so we had the 'Scort. He liked it a great deal but would have laughed at the silly prices because they were never THAT great. His last car was a 993 Carrera 4.

Some various Escorts ive seen over the past year or so -

That's nice though. Maize wasn't a popular colour and was changed to Daytona yellow at the end of 1971, so that much be an early one.

But.....that, or a Macao blue E30 M3 Evolution. Sorry, but.................

Hey now, I'm having the 1600 4-door Ghia! You can't have one. Anyway, I've sorted yours out.

has anyone experience of importing from Cyprus, is it difficult?

The blue Mk1 and the rally car in the pictures I've posted are for export to UK, so it would seem to be perfectly possible. It just isn't going to be cheap: long sea voyage, shipping insurance, customs etc etc. If you can untangle all that lot it might be worthwhile, depending on the car involved. Be advised that cars in Cyprus are not cheap. Firstly they've all had to be imported originally, with all the duties and fees involved, and secondly, every old car is "the best one left in Europe" and priced accordingly. Even if it's a shed. Wanna talk about scene tax???????

You used to see them like that all the time in the mid to late 90's they lasted alot longer than many of their 70's contempories.

Which half of Cyprus is the best for exporting a Escort from?

I can imagine myself going through some sort of Midnight Express scenario in the Turkish bit only instead of the customs man ripping open my shirt to find drugs he's greeted by the sight of several 1973 numberplates and vin tags strapped to my body.

I would then face a nasty court case where one of the students from "Mind Your Language" screams at me from across the courtroom.

Yeah exactly! Since the Greek Cypriots, and quite a lot of the rest of the world, view the Turkish occupation as illegal, I would imagine that getting a car out of there at all would be a bit fraught, never mind actually finding an Escort. I drove over in the summer and failed to see even one. Now if Renault 9s are your thing...!

Greek Cyprus still trades vigorously with the rest of the world, so this is where you want to buy your old-car projects. Bring lots of cash and be very patient! If you're a handy backgammon player, that might help, as they do love their "tavli" here (the local name for it).

Should be possible to drive back from Cyprus, shouldn't it? Surely the definition of 'roadtrip'; explaining why you've got a rusty 'Scrot on Cypriot plates, on a trailer, at several borders...

EDIT: After a quick check, it would probly be quicker, and cheaper to invest in a prime piece of aero-shite; let's say, a tatty old Hercules, and fly it back. After passing all the relevant licences. At least the fuel for the Herc would be VAT-free...

:lol: I love it! What a brilliant idea! I can see it now: "Welcome to Autoshite, sponsored by CJ Air Transport, flying your old shite around Europe." Truly the spirit of Biggles! If you need someone to manage your warehouse at Paphos Airport....

a mate of mine tells me he once drove to cyprus in a metro many years ago. 8)

A friend of a friend was still able to find Mot'd 4 doors for around £500 back in 2004-5. However this was before Ebay got silly, and he would always buy them via free ads/loot type magazines rather than anywhere else. They were all bought for rallying , as you might have guessed - the friend being based in West Wales!

Do you know anyone who actually pays that sort of cash? I know someone who has very nice Mk2, all original and not crapped up at all - put it on eBay last year as a best offer and buy it now (The prices was quite reasonable nothing like £10k plus) - all he got was a best offer of £250. The same with forums - someone pm'd him to say they would have it for nothing. In the end he just kept it because of timewasting idiots. Even in my own social sphere, I dont know of anyone who'd pay over £4k for a old car, maybe they are out there, just not around here...

I can see it now...a puggled Herc (in desert beige, natch) struggles into Paphos airport on 3 engines, and is towed into a hangar, to await a swift eBay'ing 9 months later. I'll have to get Photoshop onto it.

Actually, if I were you, and looking to make a bob or two, I'd make some contacts in the shipping trade. I understand cars can be unaccompanied on ships back to Patras: i.e, they'd need to be craned into a hold, I think. Or you can drive onto a ferry bound for Turkey. Which makes stuffing a couple into a container, and shipping them to a UK port a much better bet.

Still, might noise up DHL for a laugh, and ask for a quote to get a Manta from Cyprus to my house.

There's still one just like that running round Cannock, usually between the sheltered housing, Aldi and the British Legion club. It's on local plates, and I suspect Sid & Doris have owned it from new... 8)

I have never "got" the Escort scene thing. I had a Mk2 when they were new[ish] and it was a desperate thing. My mate had a Fiat 131 , and leaving the performance disparity to one side, the 131 was a far nicer car to drive.[Mind you 131 sports have now reached almost Escort like prices] If you don't want to go historic rallying, I can't see the point in an Escort, and even if you did, I reckon something like a Hunter / Dolly sprint would be a far cheaper option.

There's a 'famous' modified Mk2 Mexico that sold for £20k and that was quite a while back, maybe 8-10 years or so. If they're not an RS/Harrier/GT/Sport though they're a lot less desirable when you get over £5-6k though.

K1 Escorts were powered by the cross-flow Kent engine. MK1 Escort, probably the most successful Rally car of all time. MK1 Capri interior, Chrome quarter bumpers, Bullit mirrors, Old skool Revolutions. MK1 was developed from the 997cc Anglia non cross-flow power unit.
