Peugeot 205 GTi shite SAVE!

Many of you will remember me harping on about a forlorn 205 GTi that had sat at an ex-peugeot dealer turned specialist for a few years once or twice...

...so curiosity got the better of me and I went along to the garage to see it more closely. The GTi had been pushed to the back of the garage amongst 10+ other 205 GTi's and CTi's - this one was the only complete one there!

This is how it looked when parked up, had been there for 6 months at least.

I had charged the battery off my RS1800 Fiesta I scrapped a few months back and took this along, with a selection of spanners and tools to get it running.

I whacked the battery on and refitted the Air Flow Meter that had been taken off and was laying on the passenger seat. I then filled the coolant bottle up as that was near-enough empty. Plenty of oil and brake fluid so things were looking good...

...I jumped in and turned the key. Nothing. Dashboard lights but no noise from the starter. It was then I was told that the starter had packed up and the only way to get her running was to bump-start it. I had the small matter of moving three other dead 205's out of the way first!

So after they were moved (Using a 106 Diesel of all things!) I was left with this...

The towing bar was attatched to the 205 and dragged out. Brakes were a little stuck on but soon freed off. Then it was towed to the front for some air in the tyres and a fiver's worth of pez..

So, handbrake off, clutch in and 2nd gear selected - off we go...

..unbelievably the first bump sprung the engine into life!!! She hadn't been started since 2005!!! Started and ran on all four cylinders immediately and even idled too! I drove it back up the street where it started stuttering and died, probably due to the stale fuel coming through.

That was good enough for me and a deal was struck at £400. That included another starter motor to replace the b0rked one and any other spares that I should need.

And now for a well deserved wash, the guy washing it is the guy who runs the place. He put some fancy liquid on it that takes all the grime off but leaves the paintwork slightly tarnished but as I am fully valeting it out it doesn't matter...

After that it was a case of getting it on the guy's trailer to get it back to mine. Free delivery too!

So off we went and it got home no problems :D

First off it needs an M.o.T to see what we are up against. I have four tyres to go on it, which came off my old Fiesta I had. Then it's a case of repairing all the broken bits. At the moment the passenger central locking and elec window don't work, as don't the hazards. The seatbelt buckle doesn't clip in either which is frustrating! Plenty to get my teeth into...

Well saved! Looks quite presentable after a wash...

It certainly does - it looks as good as new on the trailer! :o

What a great little story of getting it back to life. :)

No I don't as there's no service history or anything on the number plates. Only way I can find out is to write to Doovla and ask about past owners as I have done before.

Thanks vinylseats, it looked a hundred times better when it was jetwashed!

Thats superb, great find/save! Amazing to think it was laid up for the sake of a starter. I have always loved these motors, especially in red. I hope to own one.. one day... well a 5 door 309 GTi might me more family friendly..

Nice to read the full story after seeing it on Flickr eailer, That looks a great save to me, plus free delivery!, what a result!.

Is the Renault 5 Gordini still on the forecourt, that was a bit tasty as well.

The red seems to have survived well without going pink..... maybe moss has anti-UV properties.

Good save though, a great story. Fingers crossed it will just need recommissioning and nothing to pricey for the MoT.

coool..ive definito got a bit of a hard spot for 205 GTis..spot on save sir..

Cheers Trig! Yes that Gordini is still about, it's round the other side of the garage now...

Fantastic! I hope that you have a lot of fun with it and that you keep us all updated with its progress :)

CLASS!

Seems a very good price too, you've done well there.

Extremely good work. I've seen loads of cars go for scrap after sitting around for a while and growing a nice lawn of moss, even when there's still a heartbeat under all the grenery.

Nice work! I'd consider a full drain and flush of the coolant system but look forward to seeing it hit the road again. Non-working electrics in the doors could be break-downs where they pass from A-post to door. My 306 suffered in this regard. Bloomin' French electrics...

Well done! Hope it isn't too rusty.

I had dreams of saving a Triumph Acclaim that had been sitting on a driveway near me since 2003. It was surprisingly solid under the algae but the sills looked a bit thin and there was some nasty bubbling in the front scuttle under the windscreen which rather put me off. I left my phone number anyway and had forgotton all about it when about three months later I had a phone call from the owner who opened his conversation by saying "the scrapyards are paying good money for cars at the moment" so that was the end of that. It got weighed the next week.

Many Autoshite brownie points to you Sir , Top save .

Hopefully much better than the D reg diesel one I had to drive for work with the sieve for a sunroof

A 205GTi arrived on a local drive a couple of months ago, I only really saw it in the dark and assumed it was a nice retro daily driver. I was off work sick today and noticed it had tell tale signs of not having moved for a while, tyres are nearly flat, algae over the trim e.t.c.. Maybe when i'm feeling better i'll kave a quick looksee and try to get some info on it.

Thank you for all the positive comments people :D it's certainly given me the motivation to crack on with it as soon as I can. Only thing is that it gets dark so early, plus I have a Mrs, so time is devoted to her as well. Will keep you posted on progress in the Autoshite News 24 section :D

Central locking nearly always fails on Peugeots and yes they tend to leak alot too. A good price and looks like the guy was helpful and actually wanted you to save it. Is it the 1.6 or 1.9?

Central locking is working on the drivers side and boot but not passenger side

Yeah he was dead happy to see it go to a good home and actually be used for once! It's the 1.6.

Unfortunately Pug 205's are not galvanised. I know as I own a 1987 205 Diesel which is needing the welder taken to it. I should add that it will be welded not srapped. :(
