It amazes me how many people you still hear saying "Robin Reliant" - but which do YOU usually say? Vote now!!

Reliant Robin.

It irritates me how many people (usually those in the media, comedians and non-car enthusiasts) call the car the Robin Reliant.

Posted

I say Reliant Robin as that's what it's called, You don't call an Escort an Escort Ford do you.

I refer my learned colleague to the very first page of the Grumpy Thread, when I mentioned I find Robin Reliant irksome.

My case rests m'lud. You smell of wee.

Can anyone think of another car this happens to? I can't

Yes. Mk2 Jaguar.

Blimey you're right, hadn't though of that.

Was the Robin Reliant vocabulary disease anything to do with Only Fools And Horses?

Lotus Cortina and Cortina Lotus (Mk2)

On a related matter, ever noticed how people tend massage their cars trim level to sound more impressive?

"Mondeo 24v", for example sounds much more impressive than Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5.

"Animal" sounds far cooler than Mitsubishi L200 Double-Cab.

And most annoyingly, speaking as a salesman, when impressionable and naieve young oiks refer to their bottom-of-the-range C-Class as a "Mercedes Kompressor", as if the badge on the back is supposed to denote that their car ISN'T inferior to any of the V6 models, honest.

I don't think this happens very often. If you know enough about cars to be talking about a Lotus Cortina/Cortina Lotus you probably know enough to tell the difference between the two. I don't doubt some Cortina Lotus owners say they drive a Lotus Cortina to make it sound more impressive.

I wonder what it is about Jaguar that encourages people to do this? C-type, D-type, E-type, S-type, MK2... it happens a lot.

Can't think of anything else though

The French used to do it with Peugeots sometimes, for some reason. They'd say "306 Peugeot" rather than "Peugeot 306". I can't think of any other examples though.

What grits my s*** are all the w***ers that think any three wheeler must be a Del boy motor :x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x

His was a Reliant Regal van not a Robin or a Rialto etc etc.

Early Regals were known as 21E were they not :? Or was that just the saloon versions :?:

Posted

21E was a special edition with 21 extras, including front spot lamps, metallic paint etc. Early Regals of that shape were 3/25 (three wheels, 25HP), then became the 3/30 after the restyle. Del Boy's van was a Supervan III

+1 to the above.

I also hate when a Rialto is advertised on e-bay 'Del-boyed' up. Its stretching it TO THE MAX.

I actually really like Rialtos as they are as it happens.

I would have one for a very short term laugh but they are oddly expensive for what they are, it's some sort of Mad Giffer Scene Tax

Its not just Reliants. I've seen many a Bedford Rascal "A Team" van and probably a few CF's too.

I remember seeing, among others a "Starsky and Hutch" Marina too.

No, I can remember it happening in the 1970s.

Here's a song about a Cortina Ford.

I had a friend whose first car was a Regal, he was terrified that we'd tell his dad when he dropped it on it's side coming off a roundabout.

He probably still is.

As said already I hate Robin Reliant

But it happens with other cars as well - 3 series BMW, S - Class Merc etc

Posted

But most people who say s-class merc/mk2 jag etc know the manufacturer and are just shortening it.

People who say Robin Reliant don't know they are incorrect.

Certainly the late Corsa-headlight models are very expensive, but eighties Rialtos go for next to nothing on the bay.

Does look quite nice, what with its' dinky Minilites and all!

But yeah, Reliant Robin it is. I will, and do, correct miscreants.

Robin Reliant makes exactly as much sense as B MG. I know people say they have a B, but that's fine, it's only like saying you have a Robin. Either way, I know what it looks like instantly.

There are dozens of old boys driving about near me in Robins/Ratios, I was only commenting to the misses yesterday that in a 2 mile journey i past 5 of them, There's even a Van version around the corner, I need to get a photo of it.

Posted

Also, have you ever seen a happy Robin/Rialto driver? They all look miserable as sin

Posted

I was thinking recently how unlucky it must be to own a Robin/Rialto in winter after all this weather we've had. You must have to abandon it completely for a time until that pile of snow down the middle of the road thaws a bit......

Only the wrong way round thing, yes Robin Reliant bugs me but the Mk2 Jag thing doesn't really; I usually say Mk2 Escort or Mk3 Cortina casually but then always write or say formally Ford Cortina Mk3 for example.
