My new sports shite - It's home!!

Well, despite the OMG SNOW KAOS!! gripping the country, I managed to get my latest acquisition the 3 miles home. 200+ bhp, rear wheel drive, bald tyres and compressed snow made for a sphincter-twitching drive, but we made it back unscathed. The score so far is remarkably good for a £500 Porsche:

Starts, steers & stops very well (brakes are a bit wooden, but it's been standing for 12 months), bodywork is filthy but in generally good order, interior is also filthy but largely intact. All the electrics work OK ( ), and should only need new rear tyres for the MoT.

So, in summary, I'm a happy bunny...

Superb!

Do you plan to keep it shabby looking? I would!

Lovely Triumph too by the way. And is that a pissed off other half I see with her back to you in a dressing gown?!

Posted

hee hee...it's actually my 13 year old daughter, she'd be delighted :D

The plan is to tidy it up a bit and thoroughly enjoy it...will also allow me to pamper the Triumph a bit more.

Cool Porsche! I'm warming to these S2 944s a lot now. :) Glad you got it home OK in the snow & hope it gets through the MOT easily.

Fab looking Triumph too. 8)

I bet that was horrific to drive.

I've got an S & even on brand new tyres it's crap in the snow.

Slippers - NOT GR8 4 SNOW. :P

The Porka looks like a fantastic buy for the money, You couldn't say no at that price.

Class and a right bargain to boot. Top work sir.

I didn't realise you could still buy half decent examples for shite money. Good work, especially the interior. :D

I wonder if the transaxle helps with snow traction.

In a word...no 8)

No, it gives your near perfect balance & even weight distribution which makes it handle like a mid-engined car.

ie utter shite in the snow

Hi Barefoot - Is it possible to completely remove the sunroof on a 944? - If so, how??

Thanks.

from the drivers seat, you pull down on the backs of the front hinge things,

then you turn the ignition key, so that it's 'accessories on' fan & the like

but not the ignition

then you operate the sunroof button

- I can't remember which way

but you'll hear it draw the lifter rack things out at the back

Now get out, reach inside & push the roof up

lift it to vertical & lift it off its hinges.

re-assembly is the reverse and it goes in a bag in the boot.

That's great, thanks for the help. Hopefully I can try it out properly in a few months :D

I didn't realise they had such a heady amount of horsepowers. Is it a 2.5? Looks good though; presumably the galvanised body isn't too bad. Since clearing my garage I've been tempted myself a few times; but worry about insurance.

Posted

It's one of the late 944's so has the 3.0 16v lump (Porsche quoted 211 bhp when new). the body has a few battle scars, but is generally rust-free...there's a small patch on the edge of the tailgate that needs treating, filling & painting, but certainly nothing to make me want to break out the welding kit :D

I never liked the 944 when it was a current car, but now its Autoshite, it is really quite appealing :)

For that money, I'd smoke that. Didn't realise they could be got for chips.

I always thought of these as the poor man's Porsche - due to its more ordinary looks at least - but like others have said there's a certain charm about them these days and you get a lot of car for very little money.

I love the Allegro-esque curved rear window. :D

I still cant believe you got this for £500.

All those 'didnt think you could get one for that sort of money'; you thought right, you cant. You're lucky to get an S1 for that money. A cheap S2 would be more like £2k.

Just a quick update...

After a few weeks wait, the good ol' DVLA have sent me a V5 for the Porsche in my name - all it takes is the reg, VIN number and £25. The really good news is that I'm only the 5th owner which tallies with the general condition of the car, which I suspect was well loved until the last twat got hold of it.

Just need to sort out the rear tyres, ABS problem and a knackered wheel stud and she'll be put into daily duty.

I heart these cars and need one in my life. They are cheap to buy but what are parts prices like? Every time I'm tempted I remember the phrase "the most expensive car you'll ever buy is a cheap Porsche

If your ABS problem is that the light doesn't go out till you blip it to about 3,000rpm

then just forget about it, otherwise Kirkmans is an excellent breaker just off J24 M1 at Shardlow

01332 792086 ask for Simon, he worked at a Porsche dealer when 944s were current.

As for rear tyres, don't buy cheap ones. I used to get through a set of Khumo's in 8000 miles!

The ABS light is just staying on all the time. I've checked & cleaned the sensors which all seem OK. I've been told the light needs resetting once an ABS problem has been sorted so I feel specialist involvement may be called for regardless. Thanks for the tip with the tyres :D
