I had a pics thread, but it seemed to disappear after The Great Autoshite House Move. Never mind, they're all there on my 'Bucket anyway. Here's some highlights (?!?) for your delight and delectation...

The merciless Hiab Man claims more victims

Fiat Croma, anyone? No? Here's a Tempra instead! This one's hiding indoors, away from the nasty corrosive rain.

Hopefully, this thread'll live on, and I'll update with all manner of oddness from my travels.

Are those flats where the Swift is? They look fuggin' depressing.

Probably ex council places where the undesirables were too near the city centre in a premium property so they got rid of the tennants, halved the size of the apartments and chucked some fancy glass doors and some large pot plants to make it 'trendy'.

Its like taking a Cavalier, putting some new trim and a shiny set of hubcaps on, giving it to someone who uses Studio Line and then letting someone else use the boot.

Croma is a bit of a spot, although with the pic kwality i thought it was a Renault 19 with an odd grill for the first few seconds (not a criticism, just unfortunate it was where it was).

Is that not a Tempra?

Fucked if I know, like i said i thought it was a Renault......

The Fiat is one of the latest model Tempras (mid 90s). :)

Those old Suzuki Swifts look like a lot of fun to drive.

Yeah, but they're not council, never were. They belong to Robert Gordon's Uni, and they're close to the city centre. Despite (or perhaps because of) the grim countenance, they're actually (or were when I was there) a fantastic place to live. When I was there (about 17 years ago), the car park was rammed to the gunnels with shite! Not any more tho'...

Is that not a Tempra?

You are correct, sir. My mistake - the Croma was the bigger one

I should apologise for the quality of some of the pics - the phone's camera's rubbish in awkward light (like with the Tempra), and either I don't have the digi camera on me, or Photoshop couldn't save it!

I've binned a few that just couldn't be saved (like a mustard yellow Lada Riva estate I happened across in Leith one morning...painful) by any means, so maybe a bit of hardware investment would help.

A couple of pics to start the year with...

ERF.jpg

A crusty old ERF. Behind the fence, behind that crusty old ERF...

Mercs.jpg

...is a line of various Mercs. These are at Noble's scrappy in Kirkcaldy, and the guy was less than impressed by me taking pics. Maybe it was 'cos I looked a bit like a Man From The Ministry, what with having my hi-viz/safety clobber on at the time, and trying to be a bit surreptitious. I pacified him by explaining that I knew some folk on a forum, who might be after Merc bits! Suddenly, his gimlet eyes lit up...

Love the ERF, wonder whats happening with it :(

looks like a showmans motor

Posted

I would've asked, but the guy didn't seem in much of a mood for a natter! It's obviously driveable, so it must be someone's project. I was thinking showman's barge too, given the massive luton-type body on a double drive chassis: but there's no showmen parked up anywhere near there that I know of. When they were in Burntisland for the Fair, there did seem to be some newer motors pulling all the rides about, so maybe they pensioned this one off.

A couple more, seeing as I'm up later than I expected to be...

CortinaP100.jpg

Spotted these at Abingdon services a couple of weeks ago. I was just about to go, when this Dutch registered twosome ambled by.

And carrying on the old Fords theme, here's a sad wreck from the scrappy trip day;

^ I could well be wrong but isn't that Mk IV Cortina a rare 2 door model?.

It certainly is. And the P100's a 'Tina type, too. I'd have loved to have time to have a chat, and take some decent pics, but sadly it wasn't possible.

Posted

I'm sure I remember seeing a few 2-door examples like that, uk-registered, right hand drive but badged as a 'Taunus'?

Posted

I'm pretty sure the UK-spec 2-doors were 1.3 pov-spec versions, for Motability. Hence, there weren't many about. I'd have loved to get a bit more info from the car's owner, but I didn't have the time to spend. Pity!

Could be wrong here; but any Mk4/5's with 'Taunus' badging at the time I'm sure were QC mistakes. My dad had a 'Taunus' badged Mk5 'Tina estate - according to the dealer at the time, it could well have been built in Belgium, hence the possibility of a mistake being made. Dunno how much truth there is in that!

Posted

Would be nice if it was indeed the case! :) Both my Dads Mk5 estates were just bog standard 1.6L Cortinas sadly :)

No more 'Tinas for now, but here's some more odds'n'ends from my travels...

Believe it or not, this harlequin Micra's taxed...

Just spotted this one tonight.

Very tidy G-plate Jetta*

Jetta.jpg

And an M-plate Cav SRi, for us Vauxhall fans!

CavSRi.jpg

*What was the last of the line Jetta GTi's with the white paint and the weird brown panel down each flank called? I hadn't seen one since, well, forever; but I did see one in Aberdeen recently, and couldn't get anywhere near it to take a pic.

Posted

I don't think they had a name- just a GTi engineering conversion? One runs around here from time to time.

Posted

^That's the one! Thanks Tiff. Dunno why I thought the side stripe was brown tho'. Early onset senile dementia maybe...

Tayne, the one in Aberdeen was very tidy, from what I could see, and definitely a 4-dr. It was in the little car park, down the back of His Majesty's Theatre; I saw it from the side of the Robert Gordon's College, so it wasn't a shot my phone would do in a month of Sundays. And I couldn't be arsed walking all the way round...

Cunningly, I titled this 'Odds'n'Ends', 'cos I knew it wouldn't always be current spots. I have a vast collection of crap, and some of it put in an appearance while I was searching for batteries in a kitchen drawer t'other day! First up, a couple of scanned pics from the '85 Scottish Motor Show (forgive the shonky pics - I was an overenthusiastic 12 year old, armed with a 110)

IMG_0002.jpg

Wonder if either of these two survive?

IMG_0001.jpg

An e-cookie to you, if you know what this mythical creature is!

IMG_0005.jpg

This wreck was behind Corrour Halt, on the west side of Rannoch Moor, and the year was 1990 iirc. The Landy belonged to the old guy who ran the youth hostel - very much needed, 'cos the Loch Ossian hostel is miles from the main road, down a dirt track. He also had a Yamaha XT500 and an IT490, but I haven't found those pics, yet.

The MG_EXE, nice, too bad the never put it into production. I heard GAYdon had one, but didnt see it on display when I went late last year.

Posted

That is an MG EX-E, very nice, I do wonder if Honda 'borrowed' the design a little for their NSX despite the MG being older by a good five years and still looks more modern today than the NSX does oddly.

Don't know about the brown strip but could the Aberdonian car be this one?

Bugger me 2 door jetta thats a rarity

Posted

e-cookies all round, 'tis the MG EXE. I've a bit of a soft spot for it; of all the 'what ifs', it's one of the best! I don't know what's more remarkable, tho' - the chequered history of the EXE, or rallying an SD1...

And the rarity of the 2-door Jetta struck me too. Weren't all the 2-doors kinda pov-spec? So I'm guessing that's not a 1600 with a Pierburg 2E3 in there.

Posted

^Given that the account belongs to 'American Dan', is it possible the car's a US import? Maybe from the USAF guys at Edzell; they left lots of odd motors, which could be seen right thro' Angus and up to Aberdeen. I'd always thought of it as being American cars, but an odd spec Euro box would fit.

Posted

Hmmm...the mystery deepens (*strokes beard*)

Thinking about it, most of the ex-USAF cars I've seen had Dundee plates on; the odd one got an Aberdeen or Fife plate. But 'ASJ' would be around the Kilmarnock area. I think.
