I came across this on my travels across the internet. Apparently in 1970 the city of Paris organised a photography competition, splitting the city into 250 metre squares and asking for pictures to be submitted to produce a photographic record. This has resulted in a huge collection of period pictures including some wonderful old french chod.

You can search the archive below using the map. Lots of the pictures are unsurprisingly not car related but it gives a taste of Paris that despite being long gone, is pretty much how i still imagine it to this day.

That's a cracking link - thanks :-)

I'm currently window shopping around Galleries Lafayette and found this example of French health and safety - I reckon the gaffer is the bloke at the foot of that bloody huge ladder

Wow! A huge selection of great photos (both avec shite and sans shite), many of which are superb captures of that unique Paname atmosphere. Thanks very much for posting.

Brilliant, this is exactly how i remember Paris being when I visited with parents as a small child.

Thinking more widely, its surprising how places can be stuck in time in peoples thoughts. I'm told a lot of folks (especially Americans) think of London still as the dark, smoky and foreboding version of itself that was inhabited by jack the ripper etc in the late Victorian era

Did I mention this is Fantastic 😎 Champ De Elysee Renault showroom which was still there last year when I looked. Anyone for a new 6?

I think so? There seems to be loads and loads of Autobianchis, FIAT roadsters and mini’s in the images, amongst the obviously french staple. A few more, this hard charging Ami is fab!

What a glorious resource! I started hunting to see if anybody had caught a Berliet PGR in action but this is even better

From 1963/4 Simca and Rootes Group were under increasing Chrysler corporate control - so the Imp will have been in the same'family' by then.

So possibly a holidaymaker in for servicing or some corporate purpose.

Rootes sold cars in France and had a prestigious showroom at L'Étoile on the Champs Elysees. The cars were a hard sell against the French domestic products and were about 25% more expensive because of import duties.

The car that really cut through to the French domestic market was the Mini - a lot were sold.

I'm sure everyone has seen this.

The posh end of the rough end, again something to identify -

The red car is a Simca 1300 - that rear design didn't last long and was restyled conventionally with rectangular rear lights.

Thanks, I thought is had a look of one, but the back end does look very peculiar, I much prefer the re-style.

Matra? or simca i can’t remember

Matra 530 (?) precursor to the Baghera

That's me - late to the party again :-)
Pretty sure there was a 530 in a set of well thumbed Top Trumps that did the rounds on our school bus.
There was definitely a Baghera in another set that were something like 'super sports cars' - Baghera didn't win much but I always fancied the three across....

Citroen chassis - the sole survivor (of not very many, unsurprisingly!) is being restored by Normandy Classics in Granville-sur-Mer.
