The Great Depreciation Challenge! Beat this.

Assuming it cost around 60k quid in 2002 with the options it had, my 1400 quid S8 would have cost about 100 grand new today. Thats a depreciation of 98.6%, try to beat that.?

My Saab 900 would’ve cost £24495 new in 1996. I paid £300 for it. So it lost 98.8% of its value from new...

If you adjust for today’s money out would’ve been around £42,500 so would’ve lost 99.4% of its  value!!

Missed the crucial piece of information there, didn't I?!!! ?

Here’s the converted version:

Purchased by me for $3,500 (£1,925)

Sold new for $80,000 (£44,000)

Adjusted for inflation to $234,800 (£129,180)

That’s a depreciation figure of 98.5%

June 1998 - £20,470

March 2017 - £100

Depreciation - 99.5%

We were on about that car yesterday when we were out in the mx-5. My partner had a 306 new years ago and she was looking forward to getting this. She was very dissapointed and said it drove nothing like her old one.

I thought it was okay. Nothing to write home about, but okay.

Trying to relive her youth I suspect. A bit like playing C64 games now. Amazing at the time but now completely shit.

I've still the clutch to do, have another go at sorting the exhaust joints, fix a bust front driver's side spring, etc.

Never mind all the money I've given the taxman.

I think it'll be an ok steer when I get the alloys sorted and with matching boots all round.

I just googled it. That's how they are. I thought it was a camera or image error. Very strange.

Multipla 15750 list
Today let say £750.

Over 95% gone.

My new 850 was at least £50k adjusted for inflation, probably a bit more as it has a few options not standard on the TDI/GLT. I bought it for £950. That's only 98.something% deprecation if I've done my sums right. To me it still feels like a car worthy of its original price tag!

Fun game!  As far as I can tell, my big liability Audi A8 cost somebody's offshore account 50k back in 2003... If we're adjusting for inflation, that's 79 big ones!  The £1500 smackers I paid is about 1.88% of that, a mere 13 years (and 130,000 miles) later!  Must have been nice new though...

Is there a quicker way to lose money?!

Unsure why I didn’t post this sooner in this thread. But my N reg (1994?) A8 had a £55k price tag in 94 (many options ticked). I bought it for £600 in 2012 ish….. kept it for 6 months and flogged it for £730. Best £600 I ever spent on a car…… 4.2 v8 of pure pleasure.

edit 99.04%

I paid £3850 for a new 1.1L Fiesta in 1982, so given high inflation in 79-81, I would reckon a1.3 Ghia in 1980 would be similar.

Back in 1986 a young W.T.C was sitting through a maths lesson when Sweaty Seymour, the teacher, was explaining depreciation to the class stating that depreciation is the % lost against purchace price. My reply of stating that a new Range Rover that cost £2000 back in 1970 is still worth £2000 in 1986 therefore the owner could, by his theory, swap it for a new one didn't make him happy.

My Dad paid £14,000 for a very nice 2014 Audi A8 just after the first lockdown.  The original owner paid £72,000.  £805 down the drain every single month for six years.

The mind boggles.

My mother has a Jimny. Paid £14k in 2013, worth the same now.
