Could also be the thermostat not thermostatting properly.  The temperature gauge on my Focus got quite lively when my thermostat went and resumed normal operation upon the aforementioned bit being replaced.  It does move a little in traffic, however.  

Like you say: could well be someone more used to modern cars.  I've heard tell that some modern cars' temperature gauges are sham devices which work off a timer, rather than showing what's actually coming off the coolant-temperature probe.  The timer moves the gauge needle to the 'warm' position after a set number of minutes, regardless.

The only real worry would be the corrosion. The exhaust is likely to be a standard one with a 2 foot straight section added. And the other things are what you might reasonably expect on a nearly 30 year old car

No but the mileage is the least of its problems by the looks of it, likely to want a shake with the sparkly stick, bushes perished, seals leaking, general tiredness. It’s a run it till it falls to bits situation, that could be 24 hours or it could be 24 months.

Perhaps he could try looking on Autodoc, most wear parts seem to be reasonably available and cheap.

Not bad cars at all the mk1 Megane, of course they get tarred with ‘French shit m8!’ so they’re invariably cheap. The 1.6 16 valve was notably quick as well.
