The above is why I went to the Ford Fair once, and once only.

I went once too. Fortunately I wasn't one of the poor bastards who's cars got stripped in the car park!

Barried up YOLO wagons like this described to a tee over on Pistondirectors.

I had the dubious pleasure of sorting out and stripping a full-on Walt 4x4 Response vehicle over the weekend. Sorry - no before pictures! A mate's daughter bought an ex-army 110 Defender for use with her now ex-boyfriend. Instead of being somethng they could enjoy together he turned into a Waltmobile and she wasn't allowed near it. After the split the Landy was grabbed back and entrusted to me to sort and sell as my mate lives abroad whilst she is local to me and I look out for her.

In the 5 months he had it, the Landy went from original army spec to something that looked like a ram raid on Halfords combined with Temu's cheapest crap. A huge tiered lightbar, lights and cameras everywhere, reversing siren, claxon horn, marker poles on the wings, stupid front grille, "power system", cb radio, stickers and emblems. Stickers included 4x4 Response, 4th Emergency Service and Emergency Support. I found a set of military number plates made up but thankfully not fitted. Stripping the wiring was easy - it was so poorly executed with no soldered joints - just twisted wires and tape, very poor crimps and no grommets or conduit. I reckon the only response he was going to see was the fire brigade when it caught fire!

To top it all there was a kevlar army helmet that he insisted on wearing when driving it - even to Tesco! Happy to report there is now one less out there now.

Anyone remember an episode of “Police Cops” (or whatever it was) where they pulled over a guy for using blue lights on his Astra G van that he’d installed himself?  He tried to blag that he worked in private medical support for events or something but the traffic plod weren’t having any of it. Would have still been illegal anyway. The whole exchange was massively cringeworthy. The chap was clearly somewhat inadequate. I do think any kind of emergency-services or military gear installed on a vehicle is seriously noncey. Unless you’re actually in the SAS or whatever, obvs.

There was a point where I thought about doing the 850 estate up as an unmarked car, purely for stationary use at shows, probably with amber lights for extra legality. Knowing my luck I'd accidentally switch on the wig wag headlights just as I'm in view of the long dick of the law. So I never did it.

Historical stuff is OK - I fell over a Bastille Day town event years ago in France and they had a big, local, military vehicle club where the guys would rock up in the likes of a WW2 Willys Jeep or a 6x4 truck complete with US uniforms - the entire works. That was OK as the folks were pretty normal and would chat about their vehicles all day - really proud of them - they'd let kids sit in 'em , flick the switches and so on.
They were definitely more fun than some of the 'wicker picnic basket on the boot rack' Morris Minor brigade that we've also met - I'd almost nominate those baskets for a nonce mod just on the basis of that one show but, at others, the picnic brigade have been OK.
