Where did the Metro go?

Posted

It's like @HMC towers round here just with slightly less luck and variety. Am going to make a guess that the new whip will be swapped out for something with more jeopardy before too long.

This is in no means a dig. Keep it up/in/out/shake it all about. Whatever.

Jeopardy? Tiffany has plenty of that. 😅

Dodgy battery for a start.

And then there's the alignment... Someone has kerbed it badly so it wanders right on acceleration and left on deceleration.

There's a leak somewhere so the passenger seat belt is wet inside the casing.

And the dash backlights flicker randomly.

We will see. 🤣

"Her name is Rio",but you've called her Tiffany?

That actually works with the tune too.

It's a much used phrase on here, but that's a prime example of a motor which was everywhere (we have a Kia dealership three or four miles away) but has now reached the point of 'I can't remember when I actually last saw one'.

Impossible. There hasn't been any activity on the scrappage permissionage thread.

Check the wheel set back.

Check the castor.

Proper, someone who knows what they are doing alignment.

Well - Tiffany made it to Newcastle. Battery held charge, although I did take a spare just in case. The seatbelt is no longer wet, someone had left the rear passenger window open slightly. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The tracking is done and she drives fine now, although some bushes may need replacing. Dash light flicker all sorted. I think it had just sat for a while.

There is a massive rust hole in the sill though....

Ok, the 'Metro' . It lives on, an older person in Southend bought it in spite of the fact I had to jump start it at the time of him test driving it. He messaged me the following day to tell me he's over the moon with it.

I remember they were £5995 when new and possibly the cheapest car on sale? A lot of car for the money.

Over 800 miles done this week, the little Rio has been fantastic.

Especially as you consider how badly treated she has been by previous owners.

Biggest issues are:

Suspension/steering - a hard kerbing on the passenger side meant the tracking was 11 degrees out. This knackered the tyre obviously. But then I looked in the boot and the spare was worn in the same pattern, down to the cords. Fuck. That means the previous owner must have driven like that for a while.

Still does the wandering thing a little bit, and some tyre scrub when parking, leading me to believe there is more afoot. I reckon bushes and/or engine mount for a start. There's also a clunk from the rear suspension at times.

Smell. It smells damp in there and I desperately need to sort it.

Structure.

There's a hole in the sill. It wasn't there until I poked it. Definitely needs welding.

11 degrees is absolutely fucking massive, something will be bent, that can't be adjusted out. It would also wear down a new tyre within a few hundred miles

Ok I take back what I said about jeopardy.

In truth though some metal work and fingers crossed a wishbone or something plus a little time with a dehumidifier and some mastic could see it right. Light work for a woman of your skills.

It kinda tracks straight now, although I'm probably not an authority on what counts as 'straight' 🤣

The garage (Formula One) said they couldn't see anything bent, but I can feel otherwise. Weirdly enough, it's the right hand wheel that is buckled.

Standard MK1 Rio rust.

Not to be a bringer of more bad news. But that section in behind is where the rear axle mount is. I'd have a look just to be sure it's ok.

I had a Rio years ago and it was rotten there too. There was no cavity wax, just the E-coat. They were a cheap car, so why spend the extra.

Posted

Could be the rotten rear end affecting the alignment at the front, maybe, that said it's mot history shows fails and advisories on ball joints, track rods and arb links almost it's whole life

Yeah, the plan is to run it for a bit while I fix the Mini's heater and then dump it.

Sad, because I actually like the car. But it isn't the best example.

Me too.

The nasty surprise of finding a massive gapping crusty hole is a better found with an exploratory finger rather than...
