Anyone fancy a project? Can deliver…. I no longer have the physical capabilities, and probably never had the skill set. Got a reasonable budget for work required

i like those! theres somethign about the odd shaped, suicide front doors that pleases me.

Whats the powerplant plans? Sticking with period, or something a little more modern?

From memory, these are still pretty valuable, so you might be better hunting an orignal engine out, but if thats not your flavour, i would probably be tempted by something like a zetec, or more likely a mx5 engine and box (easy enough to find in auto as well!) Bmw engine above, is a great engine, no doubt about it, but a bit ott for something this size i would think.

MX5 twin cam and auto box looks favourite

This sounds promising……, after a bit of de-chavving……

Now trying to think of anything RWD and DSG that isn't a million pounds

I am not surprised you found the jag underwhelming.

Performance wise when you have been used to turbo diesels even a large naturally aspirated V8 can be a bit disappointing - especially at the bottom of the rev range. My BMW did nothing below 3k.

another vote for a Jag straight 6.... would suit it and added slush box smoothness too

Sounds appropriate…. Could you find out?

There might be a difficulty with length. The RME is a 1½ litre, and Riley even found it necessary to lengthen the chassis in front of the A pillar to accommodate the 2½ litre engine in the RMB/F. Also, the XK is very heavy, probably enough to spoil the balance of an RME. The engine/autobox out of a Daimler Conquest might suit.

"I'm an engineless Riley, get me out of here!"

Public vote?? Mazda ...all day 🚀🤩🛠️

Small and light is the way forward in the RME. MX5 engine and box as suggested, or for slightly more complexity a K-series in 160bhp VVC flavour.

Not that common with an auto box,  and apparently the MG auto isn’t great…… Mazda seems to be pretty reliable

There isn't as much space as you might think.  The crossmember linking the torsion bar mountings has to be retained, though perhaps could be modified.   Also the width is restricted if you consider where the body sides would be.  A BMC B series might be the sensible but boring option -not in the same class as the Riley, but similar size and weight, auto is no problem, and the 1.8 is considerably more powerful.   And no, I don't want the job.

I’ve actually got stashed away a Cologne V6 and auto box

If it were the cosworth 2.9 24V then maybe, but uf it's a marine spec from a reliant, with 12 bhp don't bother.

I love Cologne V6 it sounds like an aftershave for a certain sort of gentleman (probably the sort of bloke who posts on here tbh).

'What are you wearing?'

'It's Cologne, Cologne V6 for Men'*

Not many auto Conquests around though, most of them were pre-select - tracking down an engine / auto 'box combo might be tricky.

There is a B series converted Riley that sold at auction not that long ago.

Im thinking a fairly easily available 2.0 DOHC ford as fitted to sierras and granadas etc with an auto box (was it a c3 fitted to these?) would be a good call - Old enough engine for it to have been done 30 years ago as well 😉

The RME axle is going to be the limiting factor.  There won't be much choice of alternative ratios, and how much power will it stand?  Presumably the 2.5 litre used the same axle and that developed about 100 bhp.

MX5 does look suitable.  I have to admit I was thinking Pinto.  Really the only thing that's easy to get and would fit and be period-appropriate is going to be the MGB 1.8.

But it appears you've had a Moment Of Revelation, a few posts ago.  You have my sympathy.  I've been there.  it's not nice.  I'm still trying to adjust, so good luck.

Trouble with B series is that the auto boxes are pretty awful. I’m not bothered about trying to go fast….. just want something reliable. Riley back axles are pretty strong

If you want reliable, something from and MX-5 or an old rwd Toyota or Datsun is surely the correct choice?

MX5 complete donor for my Rezin Rockit build was £400.00 delivered and scrap removed.

It is really good and when you see how often they are used in multiple ways it makes a load of sense.
