Cars that are an antithesis of eachother..

Today I found myself test driving a Vauxhall Frontera after a Mini R56, and it got me thinking.

I took the same route, so unintentionally/pointlessly compared two totally different cars

The Mini felt anchored to the road, whereas the Frontera felt like it wanted to do a barrell roll if I had the audacity to send it around this particular bend at more than about 10mph 🤣

But other than that, I was surprisingly comfortable in the Frontera. I think they drive reasonably comfortably as long as you don't mind the feeling of piloting a boat through water!

What are the blindingly obvious differences in your fleet that make each one more special than the other, in their own way?

doesn’t rust

Doesn't rust *yet*! I'll bet in 25 years the plastic arches will fall off revealing biblical amounts of rot.

A damn sight longer than the Landrover then 🤣🤣

Well for a start there’s a 207 sat outside, so everything else is more special than that. Note no asterisk required on everything. Nothing is well thought out on that turd; bad design decisions on other cars look like engineering marvels in comparison.

The two most antithetical cars I've ever owned are probably a Ford SportKa (tiny, tinny, chavtastic, a hoot to drive) and my C6 (vast, refined, cultured, a relaxed drive).

My Citroen C6 and Citroen 2CV6 don't differ by that much namewise, but certainly do in every other way.

My experience of VAG shite is it stays fine for most of its life then spontaneously dissolves past the point of repair, usually just after you've fixed something expensive.

Everything else I've owned has either not rusted in my ownership or rusted in a controlled fashion so it can be repaired (admittedly not always in my ownership)

Youngest son has a BMW E46 325ci and a Honda Civic Ctdi mk8. Ones diesel, ones petrol. Ones manual, the other auto. Ones 2 door, ones 5 door. Ones 4 cylinder, the other 6.One FWD, one RWD.......

Another son has a Citroën Cactus and Vauxhall Combo Maxi Life. Very different yet both effectively made by the same company and similar diesel engines.

My Corolla hybrid estate, and my previous car, a GT86.

You could also say the GT86, and its predecessor, the RCZ. Mainly because the GT86 was reliable 😄

The two that split daily use are my Mk5 golf GTI and an L322 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 tdv8.

To be honest my perfect garage I suspect would have both, perhaps the golf would give way to a nice 911, but I'm not there yet.

I know that's a bit pistonheads for this place, but I don't see the point of having loads of stuff that's similar car wise.

One is a rugged utility vehicle that gives you the confidence it will always run relentlessly under the toughest of conditions. The other is a Land Rover.

I think I might be doing OK here.
My daily, company car, is so dull, I don't actually have a picture of it, so here's a library one

It's a grey renault EV.

And here's the weekend car

Frankly, the only thing in common these two have is that neither are short of power. Otherwise. the MR2 will beat pretty much anything on B roads - sticks like shit as they say. Does help that it has a JDM 2zz engine that Toyota should have put in this car rather than the rather wheezy 140hp 1zz.

I jumped out of the T4 Caravelle and into the Merc CLK earlier. They are very different! The Merc felt like I was sitting on the tarmac after the VW. Also, Manual/ auto, adequate / brisk, more than enough seats/ can't even fit everyone who lives in my house, basic/ lots of electric toys,  diesel/ pez, short bonnet/ no bonnet, quite a few mpgs/ not enough mpgs.

I love the variety though.

Jumping from my Rover 75 to the Saab isn't so different but going from the TT to the Cavalier definitely is. The Cavalier is a great all rounder although handling is safe if quite boat-like. The TT on the other hand is a rattle-skate on the crap surfaces around town but once you get to fast roads it really takes off. It does one thing well whereas the Cavalier does most things sufficiently but excels in comfort and refinement.

Think this snap from a few years ago on my driveway pretty much fits the bill...

There was a Xantia Activa as the main daily at the time too but couldn't fit that in shot as well.

Suzuki Wagon R+ and Hyundai Elantra. 5 doors versus 4. 4WD vs FWD. 1 meter length difference. Around 30 cm height difference. One with small luggage area, but would swallow a whole kitchen with folded seats, the other with twice the space but couldn't get a cupboard in and close the lid.
