Ridiculous trim designations

In the mid-'90s, a couple who lived near me, who were in their 20s owned a red Micra Tropic and a turquoise Micra Mauritius, both bought new on the same day. They were both base, although the Mauritius had light blue seats, metallic paint and full wheel trims.

My daughters Smart is a "Passion". A friend has a P reg Ford Escort "Encore". If that's the encore, what the hell was the main performance like?

Passion, Pulse and Pure IIRC. Pure was bASe, wasn't it?

Maybe we do a subthread for London place names:

Mayfair

Park Lane

Picadilly (Mini special I think?)

Kensington

Seems a bit unfair we've not had:

Toxteth

Cheetham Hill

Prestwich

Leith

Dudley

Longbridge

Dagenham

Brixton

Dalston

My current daily is a Jaguar XE, R-Sport.

I’m always surprised more people haven’t pointed out that an ‘Arse-port’ is a fancy way saying of arse hole 🤷‍♂️

Similarly, there is this:

...the Key Arsehole, which never fails to raise a chuckle from Domestic Management whenever she sees one.

"Quite posh diesel van" was his translation, IIRC.

Which was exactly right.

205 trims were X for a 3 door, G for a 5 door, E,L,R for the main 3 trim levels and an extra A for a van and a D for a diesel.

Except for the GTi, SR (posh spec) and sometimes a T for Turbo on a diesel.

Do any manufacturers still use L GL type trim levels or are they all studio, pizzaz, water, fire and trapezium?

Always thought D Merit summed up a base model diseasel Corsa B nicely. Or the hopefully titled Fiat Uno Start. Please...

Kia had 1, 2, 3 for a while but I think they're on drugs now too.

Reminds me of the Ka, Ka2 and Ka3 which I insisted on calling Ka squared and Ka cubed.

Ironically they are now all cubed.

I hate  the pretend premium badges like GT line , ST line, etc but I don’t think the buyers are deluded unlike the people buying AMG and MSport models.

I’ve got an M Sport - are you saying the firmer suspension, different bumpers and better seats are figments of my imagination?

Seems like a weird thing to fantasize about, surely I’d at least be able to come up with something involving Margot Robbie and a canteen-sized tub of Nutella.

All the looks, or not, but it's still got the 1.2 Fiat FIRE engine under the bonnet 😂

Corsa "Sting"

I'll let that one slide actually, because you'll be getting stung in ways other than they intend.

Now you're talking - if you substitute peanut butter (crunchy, not smooth - that's for pussies)

Hyundai have kept up the Korean Mysticism though - they have 'N' for 'sporty'.
Means Neutral around here.

Subthread for Ecobollox eg

Bluetec

Ecotec

Bluemotion

Econetic

Eco Dynamics

All achieved by deleting spare wheel, increasing final drive ratio, adding some badges and aero wheel trims.

I remember a cartoon in the paper back in the late 70s . Ford had bought out a Cortina (I think) GT XLR and the cartoon had the next car badges with “mine’s better than yours”.

Has anyone mentioned the Citroen Visa vans , Van Blanc and Van Rouge.?

Early MK1 Capri was available as a GT XLR

Isn't that Latin for 'Dagenham Dustbin'?

Essexesse?

Ooh Esprit Essex. I don't think I ever quite worked out what made it different (dry sump yada yada) or why it existed, but I very want one.

I've no idea who or what Essex was or were but they sponsored the Lotus F1 team at the time so I assumed this was just a tie in with that.

But it's still not a proper M is it? Do you have a V8 under the bonnet (if you do I'll apologise and go away)? I think that's the point being made. And I agree with @Metal Guru as it devalues the real things just so they can make a few euros overcharging for stick on tat. It's not just BMW, they all do it.

A Golf R used to be a special thing quite unlike any other Golf. Now you can buy an R Line but it's just a 2 litre diesel like all the others.

And something with an AMG badge should have 6.3 litres (at least). Just sticking a set of AMG wheels on something does not make it an AMG but Mercedes and VW and BMW will happily sell you these things.

If I had bought a genuine AMG Merc or a proper M5 I'd be annoyed if the same compnies started selling cheap knock off copies of the same thing for half the price.

Thanks, sounds like colourful* character. Basically a fancy Del Boy, albeit a briefly successful one, running a one man business out of a room in the Hotel de Paris rather than Nelson Mandela House.

Well… is the M something hallowed and sacred? It’s hardly an evocative name tag, just a moniker BMW slaps on any sport oriented top of the line model. An M3 is just a 3-series coming off the same production line with a larger engine and suspension upgrades, it’s hardly built by hand by old men with white coats and lead hammers somewhere in Italy.

The «M sport» or «S line» or «AMG line» is simply an options package giving you a mildly sportier car with a standard engine. Few are ever going to confuse them with the OMG PROPPA MOTAHSPOAWWT M cars. Or, you know, two and a half tonne M suvs.

As for AMGs not being AMGs without a 6,2 litre V8… you better tell AMG then, they are busy desecrating themselves with 2-litre i4 turbos.

Sorry, but the «cheap knockoff copies» line is just weird inverted snobbery.

You could buy pretty much the entire RS catalogue part by part for your billy basic Escort in 1975, does that make an original Escort RS1600 BDA worthless, then?
