There wasn’t much Ultra about the Horizon Ultra I had. Basically an LS trim with a sunroof and red piping on the grey velour.

Well that sounds like the definition of decadence. Red piping on grey velour. And you want more?

One of the first must have been the Triumph Herald S - for simplicity, not super-sportiness.  It had a proper chrome S badge, so it clearly meant business when it was in front of you, but it had the base 948cc engine, drum brakes, and worse still, no wooden dashboard.

Nearly every beemer I see seems to be an m sport . Same as amg line mercs . I agree that it’s devalued the premium branding . See also S Line Audis

I have an M Sport.  I specifically sought out an M Sport when buying.  Why?  Because I suspect that when it’s time to get rid of it, being an M Sport will make it easier to sell.

That, and I prefer the look of the front bumper. I was actually thinking of taking off the “M” wing badges which look a bit shit really.

I only remember seeing the (dis)Advantaged Maestro versions in green but, apparently, you could get a Montego or a Metro to complete your ensemble

Back in 1972 my dad brought a Hillman Avenger, he wanted a Sunshine Avenger with it's pale yellow paint and vinyl roof...

avenger.thumb.jpg.10be347200c3a9eea224df6093f68602.jpg

But the dealer wouldn't put it on an L reg, so he ended up with an Avenger DL in Sahara Beige. the DL was pretty dull.

In 1976 Hillman did another Avenger called the Sunseeker. I guess they didn't order the right amount of vinyl for the roofs as they had an odd half vinyl roof..

I've got the feeling the Advantage was used because they couldn't use Wimbledon as a special edition, when AR were using other classy areas of London.

Škoda did so many special edition Felicias in CZ that we didn't get here that I could start my own thread but you'd all be bored very soon, so this was my favourite (not Favorit. Sorry, Škoda based pun there).

The Felicia Mystery. Only available in bright green or purple.

Saw this one in Budapest in 2017. I did get unreasonably excited by this. Wanted to look closer but there were people sat in it and I don't know if they would have shared my enthusiasm.

Most had the alloy wheels but not all. Plus the very subtle lip spoiler which non Felicia lickers wouldn't even notice.

But the best bit was the interior. They had matching green or purple seats with random mystic symbols.

And weird dots all over the door trims.

They never did an official Starsky and Hutch edition which was a shame giving the number of terrible DIY versions.

(Why did people do that with just Avengers and not say Cortinas ?)

Dredging some memories - 1970s Triumph (Dolomite) had the TC (Twin Carb I assume) and then you had an HL trim - what did HL stand for (if anything)?

High Line
Huge Liability?

You could get the FWD 1300 & 1500 Triumphs with TC probably the RWD ones too but I don't recall TC as a Dolomite badge though. HL was indeed High Line.

I’m saying a lot of MSport owners think they’ve got a real a real M BMW and someone with A class with a Renault  1.5 diesel engine thinks they have a connection to F1 because they’ve paid an extra £2k to have an AMG badge on the back.

So pray tell, what makes a BMW with a M in its name a real M BMW?

Does it need to have a inline six or larger engine? Well our holiness the E30 M3 can FRO then.

Does it need to be built by the M GmbH plant in drab Munich suburb Garching? OK, that’s pretty much anything M since the 1995 E32 M5 gone, then. Never mind - whisper it - the first M1.

Does it need to be the last thing in chassis dynamics? Yeah, where does the X5 M or XM fit in that picture?

I have no idea why anyone would want to gatekeep the M letter more than BMW themselves, but I find it pretty weird.

Despite that we've had that, Diesel is a clothing brand, what seems to sell aftershave too, but clearly they missed the fucking point with that particular spurious tie in.  They really should have gone the whole hog and sponsored Tesla

The FWD 1300 came along in 1965, the 1300 TC two years later but essentially the same car. The 1500 FWD used the Dolomite body shell (with a massive transmission cover panel where the RWD gearbox would go) but had a lower spec interior. At that point the Dolomite badged car was only available as an 1850 with twin headlights and plusher interior. At the same time the Toledo came along which used the short boot of the 1300 with the long nose of the Dolomite/1500 but with single headlights. In theory it sat beneath the 1500 and was intended as a replacement for the Herald but really there was little between the two.

The FWD 1500 was replaced by the 1500TC which was rear wheel drive but looked identical. They were never available at the same time. The Front wheel drive was ditched because it was too complicated and expensive to produce. I mean it was too complicated in itself not that it was too complicated having front and rear drive cars in the same bodyshell but that is true as well.

And they wonder why British Leyland went bust. Actually, no, nobody wonders that at all. There were so many reasons but this isn't the thread for that.

According to ARonline it's High Line, the other trim levels at the time being Low Line(L) for bASe and High Line Super(HLS) for the regional executive sales manager. You'd think directors would swan about in VdPs but that trim level only appeared on wedges with the arrival of the Ambassador(Y reg), so they'd need to fork out for a bASe SD1 or Jag to win the car park pissing contest.

That's true for the Princess.

For the Dolomite there was never a HLS, just base 1300 or 1500 and HL 1500 or 1850, plus Sprint.

The L, HL, HLS trim levels were widely used on 1980s BL cars, including Maxi, Montego and Acclaim.  Although only the Acclaim had a CD trim level, which was the top model.

I have a special edition. One of these:-

xc70oceanrace_3-1.jpg

It's a Volvo XC70 Ocean Race. Named after... an ocean race. You get fancy blue paint, matching blue interior trim on the dash and doors, Ocean Race kickplates and door badges, blue stitching on the seats, and silver rubbing strips and roof rails on the outside. Otherwise, the spec is the same as any old regular XC70. Came in D, D5 and T5 flavours, in SE and SE Lux specs. Mine is a D and not an SE Lux, which means it has an electric and heated driver's seat but a manual unheated passenger one.

One I almost forgot about.   The Volvo 340 "redline".  Nothing to do with the rev-counter.  It had a red pinstripe.  woo.

It’s a bit of an undefinable quantity but of a case of you know one when you see one. The real M cars are supposed to be the pinnacle of BMWs performance but I agree things like the X5M are much further away from that than say 340i M sport is .

However the majority of M sports I see are 118ds .

In my mind an M Bmw should be a performance model at the top of its particular range with a powerful petrol engine . Not some dreary 4 pot diesel with a timing chain made by Elizabeth Duke and some badges on .

And yet you somehow twigged they weren’t 1Ms.

Was it the five doors, the six inches narrower wings, the missing bonnet power bulge or the sound of the four cyl diesel that did it?

Were the owners shocked when you told them they did in fact not own a limited production, appreciating neo-classic sportscar?

It is.

And then there is the option pack called «M Sport» which add a few sportier details to the rest of the range.

And I’m sure you have constructed some reason for thinking owning either of the alternatives is somehow beneath your impeccable taste.

Reminds me of the guy i met who told me he’d driven the X5 and Merc GLC but then decided to buy a factually far superior vehicle in every way. Which one, you ask? The Mazda 6.

I’d say the Mazda is better engineered car . Certainly as far as reliability is concerned 😂

I’m guessing from your concern about this that you own an M sport 318d ?

No. I did have a 320d a few years ago though. It wasn’t a M Sport, but it did have the sport seats. I suppose that would have made a few of you confuse it with an Isdera Imperator. It wasn’t, honest.

It was also a duff one, as in six years it didn’t explode even once.

Have we had the Renault Clio Be Bop yet
or the Golf Umwelt?

Oh and I drive an AMG-Line Meredes, it's an electric SUV and thankfully the only AMG badges are on the floor mats otherwise I'd feel a right pillock driving it.
