Manual inline six (M54B22 in this case) is as trouble free as it'll get in the facelift E39. Make sure the radiator/tank has been replaced at least once already, if not it's about a decade overdue! Jacking points/sills would be the only other issue that could really cause you trouble in this one. The rest is just normal wear & tear. I still have my parts car although not all that much would be of use in yours.

Edit: Looks like it still needs the airbag recall carried out! Get in touch with your local BMW dealer, they'll give you free stuff!

This was actually done just last week :)

Spent the Easter weekend up in Yorkshire house hunting with @Jessi

we’re certain we’ve found the right place for us and we’re currently in the long and boring paperwork and admin side of things so hopefully things go smoothly

loooooong drive and big garage is a plus

the house itself is very lovely too and  I could already feel our job lot of jalopies bringing down the property values

anyway, the E39 covered not far off 600 miles over the weekend absolutely amazingly and I was pleasantly impressed with the 42mpg I was getting, unfortunately because I’m an absolute idiot and the e39s cup holders are for display only I accidentally launched an entire open can of Monster Energy into the passenger seat when I took a corner a bit sharpish on the drive home yesterday and all I had to mop it up was a slightly crumpled McDonalds napkin and a demisting sponge so the wet vac will be coming out when I get a chance

I am, maybe a bit later than originally planned due to unforeseen recent personal commitments but it’s definitely happening

Got to be better than here! In the meantime, fingers crossed your new place goes smoothly.👍

Anyway, back in sunny Hampshire

a rare instance I get to park my cars together

Pride of Longbridge next week for the Rover then MOT, I’ve managed to track down a seatbelt so hopefully an advisory free pass this year

Good to read your for sale threads will be considerably more convenient for me.

You know you will need some more weird cars when you relocate.

Right, time for a catch up

on 12 of April the Rover and I ventured from Portsmouth to the flower farm meet

IMG_5761.jpeg.be0b52f3ff4e04781de435786ef136ac.jpeg

I won’t post many pictures about that as I posted most when it happened in its own thread

this also happened to be its last big trip whist I still lived down south

Moving on to the 25th

the Great Daim left the carpark and the fleet and headed off for a new life in Stoke on Trent with @Lankytim

IMG_5898.jpeg.2231ab1396538776fad0d504690a6770.jpeg

I must admit I was a little sad it didn’t work out with me but I’m glad it’s still in the fold

come the 28th I loaded the E39 up with as many of my belongings as I could and rolled wheels for Yorkshire

new house reached

Just a week later we took @Jessis Mégane back to Portsmouth to grab the Rover and the rest of my stuff

IMG_6016.jpeg.81872adec47f259c1ec60f66c532f4ce.jpeg

At my parents house and we found one full CityRover

practical wagon yo

2 days later it’s MOT expired so I popped into our new garage until I had the time to sort it

IMG_6035.jpeg.5f8f11b4396ca1c0fa438cc546d40cda.jpeg

Jessi and I finally managed to arrange a date with Tim to collect the Princess

The 9th of may quickly came about and that meant new car day

IMG_6084.jpeg.c6c84e815106dee1bd934ae5f8946252.jpeg

I had to get the Polaroid out and get a “period correct” photo

IMG_6091.jpeg.4ecc9113b19b4f919e6b8a7c74606106.jpeg

we originally took the offer of the Princess as a fun weekend car to drive around the dales but as I was following Jessi home in the BMW it’s alternator died so with the Rover out of MOT, BMW not charging and the Mégane deciding it wanted to lose its NSR shock bolt on the way back up from Portsmouth IMG_6391.jpeg.b9738b0b73794b6a478427a291c939d9.jpeg

we were kind of forced to use the Princess as a daily

and to give it some credit it really does make a great classic daily

local motor factor chain of dreams

it’s not all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows though, it’s got an intermittent electrical issue that we’ve traced to a dodgy fuse box, it’ll get fixed soon

unfortunately the 2200 twin carb isn’t the most fuel efficient especially for a 2 hour round trip to work crawling through Bradford traffic and back so after fitting the new drivers seatbelt I managed to track down at POL, I stuck the Rover in for MOT at a local Kwik Fit

IMG_6151.jpeg.bf0361c6659dc8f0482abe401e0c9c25.jpeg
fuck…

Though not horrible for a Kwik Fit MOT

both sides done because it was £12 for the pair

IMG_6282.jpeg.76c939e21a504962a100864aaaca7bae.jpeg

that’s better

IMG_6296.jpeg.9947b7f1be045f443cadf0fade82f4e5.jpeg

local Beetle spotted

the Rover has now been the faithful daily since its pass and was used today to collect this mower

IMG_6389.jpeg.ceeb3d260f91ff87c3173718738d8d56.jpeg

Twas a local find for £25

And honestly didn’t do too bad of a job with the front garden

photo of me taken from the front room window by Jessi as they hid from the hard work 😆

so fleet update as of 26th of May

Princess = on road currently

Rover = on road currently

BMW E39 = in the garage awaiting Alternator “may be for sale soon we’ll see”

Mégane = off road awaiting us to be bothered to fix the shock “maybe when it’s not so hot” 🥵

I think @Jessi wanted to start a thread of their own documenting the Mégane, Princess, C Class and A Class when those 2 eventually get recovered here as well “though space is already proving a bit tighter than we’d hoped” it’d be nice to have a few other cars to spread the mileage out a bit

If the alternator isn't making horrible noises, often you can just replace the regulator on the back. Just remember to disconnect the battery first. Tbh removing the alternator is not a hard job on an M54 engine.

It’s pretty big, fits the 5 series happily enough

My god @Weird Car is that Princess as good as it looks? Cos it looks mint. And in a perfect colour for one of them too 👌

Sandglow? Perfick colour

Interior on the Princess looks very inviting. Looks like a cracking car.

Glad stuff’s going well for you ooop north 😄

Princess interiors are lush.  I've had two - neither in Sandglow! - and thought they were exceedingly comfortable.

Not mint by a long way, photos flatter it somewhat but overall it’s not bad at all

I was waiting for you to stick the VDP back up so I could get the princess a stable mate, I was gutted when you sold it 🤣
