Forgotten Cars

I, for one, could never forget that great design. Lusted after one when I was about his age.

I had one in 1982, an unwanted-trade-in 2000E.  I liked it, but it was rotten.  My dad had a two-door 1500 from new in 1964.  He hated his, apparently the brakes didn't work.  Fair enough, in that case!

TKC 562G and GTE 324B will both be bean tins by now...

This place used to be their second home!

An ex-girlfriend had a 45, which I got to drive a couple of times; having previously had a mk1 Fiat 127, on which it was based, I can vouch for it being very Italianate fun.  The 311 shown above was based on the 128 and was probably equally entertaining, but I haven't driven either so can't confirm.

I'm sure that was my emergency-substitute rental in Lanzarote!  Bag of shit it was too, but at least I got a partial refund (eventually).

Fiat 128 was great fun. Salesman told my Dad he'd never buy another marque. R12 saloon followed, then estate, x2, a blue 14 I drove thru Paris age 18, then several 20's, and 25's.

Does anyone remember when cars used to make their own individual sounds? Now everything is just a rush of tyre noise unless it's fitted with a twatty, popping & banging exhaust that just scares my dog. When I was a lad you could tell what a car was from the noise it made. Morry thousands with their fart on the over run, minis & 1100's with the sump full of cogs are obvious ones, but then there's the transmission noise from a Viva or a Chevette, the induction roar of an MGB, the valve clatter of a Simca/Avenger/Chrysler Alpine. Volvo 200's had a very distinctive tubular sort of exhaust noise. Riley & Wolseley 1500's sounded like nothing else ever, but can anyone else remember the odd, 'whoa, whoa, whoa' as a Cortina 3/4/5 set off from a junction?

Three great engine sounds. Big V twin Harley, Subaru flat four ( better than a Porsche flat 6, imo), and good ol’ American V8 muscle even when it’s only about 40 bhp per litre.

When I was writing a column for Classic Car Buyer, one that I wrote and never published was on this very subject!  Cars did indeed all sound different, not like the crappy turdbo-diseasels that are forced on us now.  I was a roadsweeper back when such things were done by the local council; our supervisors were provided with Bedford HA vans.  I could recognise one three streets away!

Mk1 Fiestas had a very distinctive exhaust note too.

I remember hearing that noise whenever one went past. :)

I used to play a game with my dad whilst waiting in the car, instead of I-Spy, it was I hear with my little ear. Identifying Minor 1000s, Jags, Minis, VW Bugs, Imps, V6 Capris, V8 Rovers was simple, as they all had their own individual sound. Then when all you could hear was the sound of tyres on tarmac, you knew it was a Rolls or Bentley.

Another one that I owned. Bought in 1992 at 4 years old with 13,000 miles for £1200.  As an ex miner the cars that you saw in the pit car park were Riva's and Reliant Robins. I  loved mine, not the last word in sophistication but it did a job.

That's the twin of one I had around the same time!  Didn't cost anything near that money though, lol.  If you added together all the Ladas I've owned, I doubt they'd reach that!

Definitely, Moggies, Heralds, and Minis I could recognise from indoors, many others when out. Another game I played when older and driving was "Name that car from the headlights in the mirror" which, I admit, stemmed from identifiying cars used by the local plod.

It's frustrating and almost makes me angry that cars like this don't exist anymore. Simple robust and durable cars that can withstand bad roads and are cheap to buy and run.

The powers that be don't want us to have a car.........any car.

Had one of these as well,  a 1981 vintage Morris Ital,  cost me 150 quid, ran it for a year before it fell apart.

I can remember that too: XR Fords sounding gruff and raspy and VW Beetles possessing a metallic clatter and pop.

The Volvo whoosh you refer to came from the cooling fan rather than the exhaust.  We had one in the family for a time and it had an enormous engine driven fan behind the radiator that looked like it came off a bus.  It used to suck inordinate amounts of air in and make the characteristic roaring whoosh as it did so.  Accelerating made it sound like a jet taking off.

I used to be able to tell quite a few cars from the sound, & still can with some, but weirdly I`ve noticed a lot of Mercs, I`m assuming 4 cylinder Mercs, sound a lot like a 70`s 2.0 Pinto, I`m assuming its the Mercs with a seized viscous fan?
