Well, it's made it to 505km so far, and showing 1/4 of a tank..

For a paltry sum, our very own @Dave_Q made me a new key from a PICTURE of the old one. He supplied the blank, cut it and posted it up first class too.

top service, well pleased👍

My 3.5 e51 did 17mpg on the motorway with 3 of us, our camping equipment, bikes and my driving.

Genuinely would've been cheaper to stay in a fancy hotel than go away that evening.

Whatever it is, I know its bad.

Benchmark: Set.

based on this insider knowledge, 16.6 MPG from me.

And genuine apologies if I am anywhere remotely close to being right!

Apologies for the delay...

The results are finally in..

660.3km (410.3miles) covered, 75L of fuel consumed.

Total cost £105.52

That's 25.7p/mile.

And 24.87 MPG.

on that basis, congratulations to @aldo135 with his guess of 24.5MPG

Honourable mentions to

@Forty45 for his guess of 23mpg, and to @hairnet for his brilliantly precise "less than 25, more than 20"

I don't think that's the worst, although I'm mildly perturbed that the fuel light didn't come on despite the needle being well into the E..

As seems to be par for the course for old jap scrap, this Elgrand is not without its Elgrot..

The back of the rear wheel arches are a classic mud trap - especially with the mudflaps.

Passenger side

The outer panel was actually reasonably solid. With only a small patch on the lip required.

The inner panel...ehh, not so much..

Now, it's not perfect (and the last picture was taken before it was completely welded)

But by Christ, it's a lot better!

it was wire brushed back, and cut to decent metal.

The inner patch was tacked in, then the welder ran out of gas.. additionally, I can see that there is another wee hole needing a patch ..

Good news is that the inner panel and return gives a good basis for building the outer one up.

I'll likely put one panel horizontal along the bottom, then weld a vertical one to follow the curve of the panel.

Time to get more gas then!

Third tank in, even though it was a bit of a short fill (car doing long run tomorrow so wanted it topped up this evening).

471km covered, £78 used at 1.397 @ litre.

23.83mpg..

It's not moving about too much, and this tank had more town work than normal...

34p a mile in fuel for the last 1000 miles ..

@stereotype has the Elgrand this weekend, so I decided to do the old 'once over check'

As @jaypee noted on the way home from the unit on Wednesday, the top right rear light was out .

two 10mm bolts releases the light, and the bulb holder twists out.

An odd bulb type for me ( not being a JDM man)

Whilst out for use by @stereotype last weekend this covered  915 miles between Friday and Sunday morning.

Overall, 174.83L of fuel used, so an average of 23.82mpg.

Expensive, but still much cheaper than hiring a van THEN paying fuel!
