Time to go and head to the garage to give them the go ahead 

I'll ask them if they want me to source plates etc and let them know I'm getting the headlights

Question is, do I take it off the private plate?

No because that will be an extra £80.

I guess the plates failed because of the spacing.

Spacing looks OK to me, I'd assume it was either the Citroen logo on the left, or missing the BS markings and maker's info. 

Keep the private reg on it.

The J and the 2 should have the same spacing between them as the 2 and the C.

The gap between numbers and letters has to be twice the gap between letters and letters etc.

Still reads perfectly fine so a very harsh fail

gave them the go ahead to do the work over the next 2 weeks or so

told them to try if they can to keep it under 800

It's the kind of thing that only gets put down as part of a list. It would be extremely harsh as a sole failure.

I don't mind, I was going to change the plates anyway.....Will pop into halfords or whatever and get some new ones in the coming week or so

Halfords look to charge about £30 for a set of plates.....

eBay and Amazon both have approved suppliers doing the same for less than half that. Last set I ordered came within a few days.

looking at those, it seems to involve posting documents etc

probably easier to do it in person tbh

Have you got a local Alliance Automotive place near you? My private reg was a tenner for each plate, IIRC.

Iirc the place I bought from said they require those but never actually asked for them and just sent the plates out, problem is that you don't know until after ordering.

Aye probably is. Ours is called TMS here, I think they're rather good, parts for the Fabia are cheap from them too. There's a few of them kicking about.

Eh? Surely the spacing between the J and 2 should be the same as the spacing between the C, X and M? The only difference in spacing would be between the 2 and C?

I recently had a new rear plate made at a local autoshop, Wrekenton Autospares.   Needed a spare for the bike rack.

Ten minutes, £8!

it failed due to having no BS standard markings

MOT tester is borderline spectrum. I've never had a car fail on lack of BS markings.

I agree, I'd like to see what their idea of "inadequate repairs" are on the underside, when it's quite clearly passed in previous years with them.

I'm going with the general consensus that the MOT tester has been a bit overzealous here

Citroen specialist or not, was the parking brake actually tested on the front axle 😉😅

I appreciate it's no use to you, but my local tyre place/accessory shop did a reg plate for me a couple years back. No proof of ownership or ID needed if the car was with me, or just the V5 needed if you didn't take the car. Think it cost £12 and it was done in 15 minutes. I'd suggest you try to find a similar place local to you

The inadequate repairs are sill holes covered in filler

I'd seen that, presumed it was covering an uneven repair so I sealed it to protect it

It’s surely old enough not to need a plate with bs markings? The 2cv doesn’t have one.

Anything made before 2001 doesn't need it. I suspect the tester's being a tad pedantic. Like yours, neither of my cars have the BS AU number on the plates.

I got plates made up online for £10ea. Took a couple of days to arrive. All they needed was the munny and a photo of the V5.

There was an option to have dealer-style small lettering on them; you could go for bonus points and get Autoshite printed too.

Plenty of online plate companies where you take pictures of the v5 and driving licence, during the purchase process. Just use your mobile. No need to post docs

I'm not bothered by it, compared to some of the other fails I couldn't care less about it lol

I've been hearing stories about removing steering racks and engines to do those boots

It's really quite upset me I must admit 

As much as I want to save the car

If its going to be £1,500-2,000 to do the work

I just can't justify it

The garage seemed confident they can do it without removing the rack etc, so let's hope they can

I do agree that sort of money can't be justified. But it doesn't seem like any more of a pain in the ass to do a rack gaiter on them than any other car based on that video. 

I'm sure it will be fine
