http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/91-Fiat-Panda-Sisley-4x4-999cc-Spares-Repairs-Drives-/220647881951?pt=Automobiles_UK

Classified ad price: £750.00

Paintwork has "gone dry" / lacquer peeled on the roof and rear, Driver seat has a tear/cut (as pictured), the doors have rotted out at the bottom (as pictured), as listed the drive train/transmission has a fault but it still moves around under its own steam

Is it me, or does £750 sound steep?

^ I'm not so sure, the Sisley's are quite collectable (I still wouldn't pay that for it though).

The Audi Quattro was based on this. 4WD transmission, Passat engine, VW parts bin for everything else and a bodyshell that makes a Kubelwagen look elegant.

Iltis is German for ferret btw, why don't car manufacturers use names like that any more? Announcing the new Peugeot Gurning-Guppy :D

Somebody save that Lada! It really should be some casual decorator's work motor, that's it's true destiny. Sadly, if it is saved, it'll probably get hotrodded (not a bad fate) or over-restored. Either is better than death by oval, but still wrong for the car.

170bhp

I like that, a lot. Can't help thinking the claim of 170bhp is just a tad optimistic when there are no real detail of mods

I like that, MORE. Looks like good fun and a good way to annoy the kids at te traffic light grand prix.

Standard 323 Turbos were 150bhp I think, so 170bhp is probably do-able with a bit of boost tweaking and some basic tinkering like exhaust, filter and so on. Wouldn't have thought you'd even need to crack the engine open.

1972 VW 412LE Variant

When i first saw this i thought it was very ugly but the more i look at it and think about it, I find it quite attractive, I've never even seen one before.

Shame i don't know the first thing about them, all i know is it's air cooled, rear engined, Fuel injected and very rare, All things that sound like trouble!.

It's Beetle engineering basically, although you'll probably find exactly nothing is shared. It's a rare find, and is that the present condition? Wow!

1984 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 GL

It's like 1990 all over again!

I remember when there was one of these abandoned in every layby, along with a Sierra, Escort, Metro and Mk1 or 2 Fiesta.

I used to run one for about 2 years. Coming from a Beetle it's amazing - 80bhp means you can accelerate up hills, cruise at 80mph, wind it up to almost 100mph, it can carry huge amounts of stuff in the front boot and while the floor is a bit high for an estate, it's still pretty roomy.

Seats are big and comfortable, brakes are fair but no servo so needs a shove. The petrol heater is used as a booster to the normal heat exchangers so it keeps you toasty warm in freezing weather. Handling is fair with McPherson struts up front and semi trailing arms on the back, although it leans a bit in corners. Mine was an auto so you could floor the throttle at the lights and the front would rise up like a motor launch :D

As you can see, they're ugly as sin. The engine can be a bit tricky to diagnose because the injection system is prone to air leaks. Not impossible and when they're running smoothly it's great - turn the key and it fires up straight away with a smooth idle. The injection is Bosch D-Jetronic which is also used on 1970s Volvos (P1800ES and maybe some boxy ones too) and pre-HE Jaguar XJ-S V12s.

Objectively, the early '70s Audis did everything better so a bit of a dead end for VW. The basic engine was used in some VW Vans (with lower compression), all the 411s and 412s and the Porsche 914. 411s and most 412s were 1700cc, 1974 412s were 1800cc, "E" means Einspritz or injection, otherwise it'll have twin carbs. It was carbs only on the 1800cc. Vans took the same engine to 2 litres.

I know at least one of these has been posted already, but this is just a quick roundup of one owner, sub 100k Vauxhalls. Had the lifetime warranty existed at the time, these would still be covered:
