G-reg Sterling is pretty much nearing completion! :D Went down today to the see the sodding thing, its had its exhaust put on and sounds an absolute treat, what a car. It failed its MOT yesterday on brakes, windscreen washer and a tyre. Spare has been popped on, brakes have been stripped and cleaned and now only the screen washer needs looking at.

I took it out for a quick test drive and its great. Cant wait to get it home.

Fitted a good s/h hub to the 205 after work; in the past a ham-fisted spanner monkey had stripped the bolt that clamps the hub to the pin of the bottom ball joint, with the result that it had fretted the casting resulting in very interesting (read dangerous) handling.

Job went well except that despite painstakingly cleaning the threads and lubricating, and also working it gently with a ring spanner, the nut of the bastard TRE stuck and the whole thing started turning. Tried a jack under it but had to cut the bloody bolt off. Thankfully enough threads to get another nut on on reassembly, but not enough to engage with the nyloc portion of the nut. Looks like I'll be investing in a new TRE on my lunch hour tomoz, but at least test drive demonstrated the thing now handles, which is nise...

Raised the Renault Master from its near two year slumber. Fired up pretty much first touch once we gave it a boost from my mates Van. It's booked in for an MOT on Friday, which is when the decision is made as to what to do with it. Had a quick check round it, defo going to need a patch on one of the sills. It certainly needs a good bloody scrub and de-mould.

The engine settled down to a quiet idle, well a quiet at these can be, but when revved it has a pretty nasty bearing squeak, I'm assuming (and hopeing) its the Alternator, but it could be the camshaft... The engine it bloody inaccessable, just a small hatch in the cab, and the drivetrain is typically old Renault, with the gearbox in front of the engine. Meaning the bonnet is just a service hatch to check levels etc.

I guess if it's a catastrophic phail on friday, it'll be worth a bit weighed in.. :(

Is this a 2.5 Diesel? If so, would you let me remove the engine and offer you scrap engine blocks to make up the weight?? I'm after a 2445/2500 Sofim engine.... for trial fitting up purposes only y'understand. Just a thought. I DO HOPE it passes though. For your sake!

Brilliant news! :D

Windscreen washers may be clogged with algae, the ones on my Maestro were and it took ages to shift it! Brakes may be a sticking caliper or maybe a fluid leak somewhere. Did they say where the brake imbalance was?

The o/s front wheel and n/s rear had the sticking brake problems, they have been stripped and cleaned already and are working great, I also suspect the algea in the washers. Apart from that it drives and sounds great! Well chuffed.

MOT booked for next thursday. Ive gone about 2 weeks without some car related stress in my life so time to redress the balance

My newly written-off, ex-taxi Mondeo passed its MOT this morning. Bugger all up with it.

So far, total cost of repairs to it since the insurance classed it at a total loss = £0.

Amount of time taken knocking the dent out of n/s/r door and wheel arch before taking it for MOT = an hour, tops.

Number of things replaced = 1. Wheel trim.

Number of things adjusted = 2. Headlight aim and a rotational tyre was facing the wrong way.

Number of codes erased from the engine management = 1. EGR valve gave a funny reading that hasn't returned since it was cleared.

Hmm, I can see myself using this thing for a while. What's a 1.8 Mondeo Mk3 do to the gallon?

That little hatch is actually in a great big (removeable) bonnet....can't quite remember if one of the seats comes out (i do know no tools are needed though).......access then is very good. Also access to front of engine is excellent from underneath

Got my renewal quote for my trader's policy today. It's £100 up on last year, but I was kind of expecting it to go up a bit - at least it hasn't doubled or anything stupid.

My Mk4 has just gone :( I'm happy that it's gone to a enthusiast though, The guy seemed really nice and was into restoring cars to there original condition, He showed me photos of his XR3i Cabrio which he's just restored which was stunning but i still feel sad to see it go.

He left Plymonth ay 5.15am by train and now has a 5 1/2 hour drive back home in it! Mad!, Still it's now means i have £600 to spend on something else!

Nice try SOC! I could think of a lot worse ways to spend £600 (and better  ).

Shame you let it go, but I’m pleased too that it’s gone to what seems to be a good home.

I can think of far worse ways to travel that distance.

Wednesday in figures -

860 miles

34.4 mpg

64mph average speed

I'm well happy with that given I wasn't on an economy run, went into Paris and round the Arc de Triomphe for shits and giggles as well. Not bad for a 1.8 petrol turbo I reckon.

Last attempt to offload Hyundai (Pistonheads) just used, and currently TXTNG scrap merchants to see who pays the most. You can't win 'em all and if the worse comes to the worse I'll have the CD player, spare wheel and battery off the bastard before it goes.

Is this the wrong place to admit I like driving the Cavalier more than the BMW on most journeys?

guy who sits next to me at work has been given a green Rover 800 sterling coupe

it's very low mileage

needs a scrape that's rusted through to a small hole on the rear quarter welded

front bumper is split and not lined up well

every arch has a minor scrape

but it's lovely thing

I think he won't like the fuel consumption though

On the subject of which, I'll be offloading the Impian one way or another towards the end of next week. I just need something small and ideally diesely. Fingers corssed there'll be a 1.5d AX knocking about locally in the next few days. (Or a rover 100 thingmy. You never know.)

So if anyone's got a hankering for a bit of lotus-fettled mitsubishi, shout up!

bollox bollox bollox - sold the Lancer on ebay - but buyer not buying due to usual family story / bid in error etc etc. Only shitter is that insurance runs out on sunday so now I either have to declare sorn and cash tax in or reinsure it .... BOLLOX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go through the NPB and ebay dispute process anyway. Twats like that need teaching a lesson.

Not sure what you expect M.Bolleaux to do about it mind.

'Thankfully' eBay seem to have made it far harder to report non-paying losers these days.

Toned: slam an advert up on here for the Impian, you never know someone might be interested.

I will as soon as I get my act together. Right now I'm just throwing the idea out there in the hope of subliminally ticking someone's fancy with it.

PROTONS ARE FUCKING ACE

Been looking at Corsas (Corsi?) as well. Don't tell anyone.

Sceptre is booked in for MOT at 12.00 tommorow (Sat)

Fingers (and everyting else!) crossed.

Good luck Matt.

The big green lummox of a van didn't do bad at all in the MOT, couple of patches of welding, a CV boot (which should glue and tiewrap bach together), a rack gaiter (£28 from renault), and a crap handbrake, probably from being stood. Quite proud of the old thing to be honest!

So work comences shortly!

Giving serious consideration to lobbing five grand at a 1987 Peugeot/Talbot. Trouble is it means the Cortina will have to go and possibly the Vespa too.

Unless it's a mint Camper Van then I can't imagine any 1987 Peugeot/Talbot's being worth that much.

Would driving this make me look like a right twat?

Not in my eyes fwiw. I quite like the whole matt black thing. Within reason. If it was a 2 year old rangie covered in OVERFINCH badges then it would.
