THE GUBBERMINT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST

Have you found out what's wrong with the handbrake? Because (as mentioned in this thread a few pages ago) mine went from completely ineffective to excellent just by breaking the brake cylinders loose from the backplate, rebuilding the adjusters and copper greasing everything. Adjusting the cable should come last.

That was my plan until the adjuster broke. I'll dismantle them and re-build as soon as I have time, but I want to know what else it needs before I start dismantling really. The adjuster rods don't seem to move at the angle they should either, but I'll just take the whole mech apart when I get round to it. New adjuster mechs are cheap enough anyway (I'll definitely need one for the sheared adjuster one). I suspect the biggest job will be getting the bastard drum off the side that no-longer adjusts and is binding a bit.

Spent all day learning how to knock dents out of body panels.

Didn't do too badly. Recently acquired this, so spent a few hours faffing about with the back door (it was pretty mashed) as the door needs replacing anyway.

Hopefully the latter (above) will show the difference, it's come up a treat now and is spotless.

The colour of the car is MEGA but a bastard to keep clean, water marks seem to show up very easily but hopefully a really good waxing session will help. Love motoring round in this, so easy to drive and surprisingly pleasant too.

Lovely. Cleans up nice. :)

I'm off to a mate's wedding in Boston today. Wedding is at 2, but the guy who had the Herald lives in Boston too, so I'm heading there now to load the Imp up with bits.

Off (possibly) saving some God awful shit from scrap this morning deep into Station/Warren/Wal/MiniMad territory , will report back L8R.

The joy of acquiring this yesterday morning:

Was soon tempered by the annoyance of this happening:

Coolant pissing out the radiator. Which I wanted fixed when it went in for the head gasket to be uprated two months ago, but the mechanic reckoned was fine after a pressure test. F*cking pigs' tits.

Sharon wishes she'd hung onto her Astra convertible now, but hey you don't buy an F and expect MX5-style reliability!

Scimitar has sold! Won't be collected until next weekend, which gives me more time to work out what on earth I get next. Have been tempted to p/ex the Saab for a Rangie on LPG. What could possibly go wrong?

Posted

Everything? :D

New crud now collected and it's probably going to break the shit radar. Also it would appear it was cleaned the last time I said something complimentary about Ivecos. Anyone want a cheap, dirty little runner? Thought not. Pictures and what have you to follow.

Stripped the other caliper on the Sceptre, I recon that it had had new piston in at some point as there was no corrosion on them at all. one popped out with a blast of compressed air, faffed about with the other until I thought 'sod it' and used a chisel and replaced it with the odd new one. All back together with new seals, I will refit it this afternoon. Then get it booked in for MOT...

Watch this space.

Give it it's due, it ran like a Swiss watch and was reasonably lively too.

Wow! Look at all those doors! Can't remember the last time I saw an Accent of that vintage that wasn't a 'coupe'. 8)

I think the only V-reg cars I've seen with back arches as rusty as your Accent's are run-out model Escorts

Fibreglass/cornflakes packets/chicken wire/splodge will sort them out no bother.

MOT'd December!

I quite like those Accents, had the later model as a hire car on Crete in 2001 and it was ace...

My sister's golf is misbehaving, so I've got it to sort out.

Clock's wrong, too. I make it a quarter to eight.

Had a mixed weekend. Got a pair of part worns for the front on the golf, got them fitted and kept the jeffed old tyres to try and fit on some 14" t25 steelies part to see what it would look like with tiny tyres, and part to have a crack at fitting tyres with some screwdrivers.

Used a vice to break the bead:

After a lot of swearing and a few glasses of water, the van looks exactly as ridiculous as we'd hoped.

Later on, we fitted some poly bushes to the front wishbones on my golf (£20 a set and easier to fit than normal shite) seeing as the other bushes had completely separated and left the wishbone flapping up and down inside the subframe. It drove alright despite this. Million times better now though!

In doing this, I had the front wheels off to notice both of the new(part worn) front tyres looked like this on the inside.

Que very steady drive home, and snotty message to tyre seller! I have another unrelated pair of tyres arriving tomorrow which I'll have to use to replace these rather than the rears and see if I can get these swapped or something.

Today we welded some front damper mounts on the bus, to fit some sunbeam rapier dampers which were the ones that looked most like they would fit at newark autojumble. It started raining quite a lot and morale was low so we did one side and then packed up.

Took saab out yesterday and noticed the fuel pump grinding away. Think this might be the reason for its cutting out. £80 later and and new pump installed but it starts and runs for 15 seconds before conking out. I think that I must have failed to seat it right. Will do it again once it stops pissing it down.

Micras sunroof is dripping as well ... bugger

Had one. Most horrifically diresome pile of prolapse I've ever had the misfortune of owning. I've got a Proton Saga ffs and even it isn't as mind numbingly dismal as my Accent was.

Mine was a white 1.3Si Coupe. I don't think I've ever seen an Accent that wasn't white or that off purple colour...

I nearly photographed an Accent saloon last week. Didn't know they existed.
