The grumpy thread

Sorry! He may be a grumpy wotsit, but he does play very good tennis. Not fussed about where he's from to be honest.

Posted

I don't care where he's from either. The main news got shunted onto Beeb 2, but it was seemingly easier to stick a filler program on rather than the regional news. The tennis was scheduled to be on bbc2 anyway, so why did they have to mess about with the schedules? Fuctifano.

That's the BBC for you. In the name of "serving the licence-payer what he wants" you get wall-to-wall ball games and anything you actually wanted to see gets shunted to BBC2 (if you're lucky) or "postponed until a future date" which never materialises. Thanks Beeb, I'm glad I've left you behind*...

*Except for the criminally misnamed BBC Entertainment, available over here, consisting of The Weakest Link, Doctors, Eastenders and Holby City. Just think, this is the organisation that made 2 Pints, Porridge, Have I Got News (etc), QI, Blott on the Landscape... where did it all go wrong?

The BBC is great. If you think its rubbish, what are you comparing it to?

It used to be great, I'll give you that, but look what it does (and has always done) when a so-called sporting event appears, such as Wimbledon; and look what it sends round the world as flagship "Entertainment." Hardly the best showcase, you must admit.

Posted

A good example would be that Our War programme - a remkarable bit of tv. Watch foreign tv and you'll quickly realise how good the BBC is. Yes they have lots of shit on for mouth breathers to natter endlessly about on Monday morning, but a lot of quality stuff as well

All this is knocking Wimbledon is a bit unfair  Tennis is our National Game; in the same way that Football is. The only difference is you don't have a team in every sizeable town, and several in our major cities, and that we're rubbish at it, and you can't see the ball during a game, and they have to stop playing when it starts to rain and listen to Cliff Richard, and no-one you know plays it (probably no-one at all plays it), and the draw is rigged so that the lesser players never get their moment of glory, and you're not allowed to go North of the Thames, even to Wembley, and you don't know who's who because thay all wear identical clothes, and you can't watch it on Sky in the pub.

Never mind, the Tour de France starts on Saturday. It's a bit like Tennis, only they have bikes, and they don't hit tennis balls with them, and they ride round France very quickly through some beautiful scenery and towns, and we have several world-class riders, and it's exciting to watch, especially the sprint finishes, and best of all, the commentators know what they are talking about. :D

Can any of them speak understandable English? If not, then despite the above, they have a chance of keeping their jobs. If they can, they're on borrowed time.

Tennis is shit.

Football is shit.

Television is shit.

Does nobody actually do stuff to their cars anymore, or do we expect to sit here waiting for replies on an internet forum like sad twats?

Oh wait. Bugger. I'll get me coat.

It's a fair comment Albert! (even if you're wrong about tennis, which I'm watching on i-Player due to lack of telly). My excuse is that I'm not touching the Rangie until I've got a new battery for it as I'm fed up of having to jump start it. It doesn't seem to be losing much via the drain, so I've gambled on duff battery.

It's after midnight here, don't want to disturb the neighbours... :D Also, we've had at least 3 weeks of too-hot-to-work between 10.30am and 6.30pm, so not much gets done really. I know, shouldn't complain, I could be back in Blighty, drowning.... Is there a "sweating" emoticon?

Bloomin' lovely here! Gorgeous day. Sunny without being too hot. AND we get proper BBC rather than BBC Entertainment, which is only there to punish disloyal ex-pats. :P

When you read wat’s moans about the Volvo forum, perhaps you think he’s making it up, or exaggerating a bit, or maybe he’s just the sort of chap these things happen to.

No.

I’ve posted my 740 Estate up for sale there, got a couple of encouraging replies and then a PM from one bloke. A request for more photos, which is perfectly fair, and I sent them over the following day. Then some back-and-forth about how he can’t get cheap insurance, then a few questions about how to get to my town. I said I wasn’t in on Wednesday (yesterday) evening, but Thursday would be fine.

Yesterday evening, as I walk down London’s glittering West End, I get a message from him. “Can you please take some more photos of the headliner, plus the rear seats, and the load area with the 7 seat up and down†I wrote back saying I was 40 miles from the car and wouldn’t be back until midnight, but would send them over first thing the following morning.

I got back to the railway station, drove home and stopped off at a petrol station which was the only illuminated place around, pulled out all the child seats, boxes and bags from the boot and took more photos. Exhausted after a 6am start and by now it was about 12:30, I set the phone to upload them to photobucket and thought I’d get up early to send him the links this morning, at 6am again.

Ooh, I’ve got a message. “Sorry, won’t be able to see the car todayâ€Â

Is it just my bad luck? Is it associated with that forum? Am I pissed off and even more tired than normal?

I learned a long time ago that in this digital age photos cost nothing. You take about 100 of every part of the car, distant shots, close up shots, detail shots, from every angle and then upload to flickr - then you let them have a link to the flickr page. It sorts the mongs from the boys!

i missed out on a 200 quid 2-litre cortina less than 30 miles from me

Normally, I'd put this down to bad luck. And yes, I do get shit on more than is strictly fair.

However, you're dealing with the VOC Forum - believe me the mither you've experienced is just the tip of the iceberg. There are some weapons grade cretins on Retro Rides but some of the VOC Forum members are so willfully stupid it's comical - I realise I have a short temper but I don't take enforced breaks from there for nothing you know. In the three years I've been there I think I've had four or five transactions that have gone smoothly, and they're with members I've had a long term business relationship with. There's a bloke in Scotland, a lad who runs a 144 rally car in Cheshire and a few others (notably Paul H, Dai Brace and Gordon Hunter) who have my email address and so don't have to contact me via forum if they want something.

I also know the pedantry and pointless back biting isn't limited to the Amazon section. The whole forum was brought to its knees a few years ago by a few 'disaffected members' (presumably with nothing better to do) who decided to question the minutae of how the site was run. There was another serious problem when a customer kicked off at a specialist and decided to post his experiences on the forum.

The thing is, the 480 Forum Europe is even worse. Aside from a couple of knowledgeable stalwarts, I've never seen a larger collection of insular, paranoid twats in my entire history of posting online. The mere mention of a 5GTT is enough to whirl the place up into a shitstorm.

In other news, despite some helpful suggestions from here, the carb trail for the 305 has gone cold.

Fuck's sake. I wanted to take the fucking thing to the fucking Retro Show. Fucking Amazon specialist isn't getting back to me about the new floorpans, fucking 480 stuff isn't selling (QUELLE SURPRISE) and no one will talk to me about having this Sunday off at work.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.

Wat,

This guy might be worth contacting: Dick Husband from C B Motors in Nuneaton, he specialises in parts for old French cars. I stumbled across him on the Simca/Talbot Owners club website & he is sorting out some parts for my Simca. Looks like he does PSA stuff as well.

dick.husband@btinternet.com

I emailed him late last night & had a reply by first thing this morning.

Did the BX Club not come up with something?

Sent your blokey an email and he hasn't yet replied. I wouldn't normally be arsed but I sort of need the thing in a hurry.

I've fired an email off to your gent and the Simca fella EL mentioned. Ta muchly.

Is his e mail reading my Salford uni address as spam?

Was watching a Rover SD1 2000 which ended over a week ago. I did place an initial bid at the time and asked for some more photo's. The only photo was a general picture of the car.

The vendor said he would e-mail them the next day. No pictures arrived, did not place any more bids as I have had a change of plan. Anyway car was won at least a week ago and hasn't appeared since (so I assume it was a successful auction).

This morning I open my e-mails and lo and behold there is an e-mail from the vendor with the said pictures with a message saying "sorry they are late".

I realise life gets in the way and if he didn't have time to send the pictures when the listing was active then that is fair enought, but, what does he think I am going to do with them now, put them up on the wall?!! :?

If it was that navy blue one, it never met its reserve, so he'll still have it. Therefore you can look at the pictures and decide if you want to pursue it further.
