The grumpy thread

Urrr.... I posted this accidently in the antedote to grumpy old man, it was meant for here:

Other old car owners Evil or Very Mad

Honestly, I am personally elated if I see practically ANYTHING old on the road and indeed last week I spotted a 60s Alfa Romeo GTV in white in class 1 condition- delighted to see it.

I passed it today at low speed on my street (speed bumps ftf) and gave a toot and a wave ( I was in my CX) to which I received nothing more than a derisory FACE from the stiff old giffer at the helm.

Why does this happen - are we not all brotherz and sisters of the old car? Happened before with some mamma's boy weekender in an E type couple of years ago - just gave a 'look' that lacked enthusiasm.

I think they were just jealous that I have a cooler, more exclusive ride that only cost £700 and is about 100% more engaging and interesting than their "classic and sports car" box tickers... well at least that's what i keep telling myself. Also didn't like the day a couple of years ago when I turned onto my old road one summer eve to sight a pair of Capris across the road. They both visibly noticed the CX as it came into sight, the younger guy looked mildly enthused, but the older Capri-ist visibly said (I seem to be able to lip read) " what IS that??!!??" - I decided to change my initial plan of going over for a car chat when I spied his FACE at this.. I do wonder how someone of his age who owned a late 70s car could not recall/ID the CX, a car that sold pretty well in the UK at that time and one that's pretty easy to I.D.... but hey..

Still, to redress the balance, our very own Cortinadave, passed me on the M8 last week and made my day by breaking the monotony of silver german shit on the 3rd lane with his white Cortina - toot an a wave and it made my fakkin day!

Got it in a nutshell.

I've got a fairly scruffy old Volvo Amazon which gets me about just fine but wouldn't win any beauty contests, and I've noticed that quite often the ones who don't return a flash and a wave are the shiny MGBs and Rovers. The classic classic car stuff if you know what I mean.

Barstewards.

If I spot your CX I'll deffo give a wave. 8)

I'll shout or something if I see you about. If you see a grey D plate 121 flashing its lights or a Manc plated silver Citroen C4 with a RR sticker on it doing the same, you know it's me :D

Also j-j, did C&SC borrow your CX for a feature recently? The plate seemed familiar....

Walked out my job today. I could no longer stand the verbal abuse from the tossing wanker of a 'teamleader'. The cunt seem to think he's some sort of big man just because he's a bit taller and loses his temper easily. He seems to think he can frighten people. Probably got a shock when I stood my corner, I was seriously tempted to knock his fucking teeth out when he walked up to me shouting accusations at me. Instead I walked out the warehouse otherwise I would have seriously lost it. What pisses me off even more is the other 'higher' teamleader who witnessed it (Slighty higher than Tosspot) did absolutaly fuck all. Then when I told him I was leaving because of said Dickhead, he just smiled at me like it was fucking joke. Useless cunt.

The job was only a temporary warehouse job through an agency anyway.

This is the 2nd warehouse job I've walk out of due to the petty attitudes of so-called fucking 'teamleaders' who seem to think they can talk you like a peice of shit just because your a temp worker. Fuck off. Would they speak to me in the same way outside of work? Bollocks would they. Wankers the lot of them.

Roll on the Dole :(

Haha! cheers guys!

Studebaker! you're fae Clydebank! why didn't I notice this before!!?? I have never seen a volvo Amazon around this area and believe me I WOULD notice it!! A wave from anything old and in use makes my day!

Wat - cheers matey. I actually bought this month's C&SC for the Citroen article and the Saab bits. The Rover thing's good to. (haven't got round to reading the 75 years of Jag yet though) Not my CX but the same colour as mine (Bleu Regate) owned by a really top bloke Sean from Bristol. His CX is in much better nick than mine.... he shares use of a workshop called 'Area 52' in or around Bristol that's run by some general old car fanatic - (VW dudes and such and it's open for all to work on their old car where they don't have their own garage) Good article that, even though they made out that the XM doesn't have 'switcheable suspension" and that the C6 does was wrong: the XM was first to offer this. Otherwise, a really lively and enthusiastic article that reflected at least an eighth of why I love old Cits... In addition to the usual clichés and platitudes that you read in EVERY old Citroen retrospective, there were some new takes on them that were really quite pleasing.... quite refreshing and has restored some faith in C&SC for myself.. not all though..

Anyway, Studebaker Hawk You're right about the MGB drivers - they just look in disgust as though the choice of anything other than some wooden old British thing was some type of affront! hey just don't 'see'. Trouble is, I love old British grot too! though i see it as 'grot' and not as some precious jewel that is to be held in some elevated position: I take things at face value and historically, continental cars to myself, are far more interesting than those produced here.. Though a do have the horn for BMC products...

Does anyone else on here agree that the first MGF was the last example of BMC-influenced greatness/crapness hybrid? I have something of a soft spot for these.

Sorry to hear that. I have also 'temped' in a fook-off massive office that was sul destroying stuff.

Thing that irked me the most was being referred to by line managers as 'a temp' - I have a fukkin name bitch! anyway, I eventually applied to the company for a permanent position with them instead of the temp agency - same job but higher pay. Could be worse... for a while till i walked my ass outa there too due to total apathy. Hell, they even did a thing they named 'morale-o-meters' that you had to submit each week! Jeez, if it comes to this ther has to be something wrong.. Admittedly I always ticked the 'middle' boxes on this. (the equivalent of 'no opinion' in the end).

I signed on for a bit recently and was told at the time that you could send out this £1000 grant thing to an employer if they would employ me! I actually asked the J-C person wtf they needed to be bribed t give me the job!! surely if I was not right for the position then I was not the one!! I mean who would be missing out on the position if I was given the job over someone who'd not offered the grant thing?

Madness there.. or desperation..

Cheers j-j. Just shot off a letter of concern/complaint to said company. Not that anything is going to come out of it. I'll wager on getting a fob-off reply along the lines of; -- Sorry, we cannot help in this matter (Because your a temp, hence, not our problem) we suggest you speak to your employment agency -- As if the agency are gonna to do anything, for the agency its a money maker, sending people there means commision, so theyre not going to stand my corner.

So I get verbally abused, walk out of job, no one willing to help. I lose.

Company always gets away with treating temps like shit, agency doesnt give a flying fuck and panders to companys demands so they can get paid, Compamny and agency carry on as normal.

Welcome to the "democratic and fair" employment of the 21st century.

Sorry to hear That Lord Sterling.

It would certainly appear for whatever reason (probably companies using the recession/credit crunch as an excuse) that employers are treating people like shit now as they think they can get away with it.

My missus is getting the same at her works and is not alone, but there are still some firms who know how to treat people properly.

I doubt it's any consolation but maybe it'll end up being a good thing and the right job for the right firm will come along in time, though hopefully sooner rather than later.

Been there and done that! Just one point Sterling. If you walk out of a job you will not get benefits as it was of you own free will. If you left due to stress however (anxiety/depression etc.) I think you will find that you will. Best get down the doctors and get signed off I say. I think it seems that you are legit in regard to being stressed as a result of poor working conditions.

Just a thought.

I got fired from my last temp position because my coolant froze and couldn't get into work. The day before this happened, they were interviewing some lad and showing him around, I believe they were going to replace me anyway as I couldn't give a shit about camaraderie with knobhead backstabbing 'teammates'. The whole taking a day off didn't matter.

I'll never use an agency ever again, I tell you that.

Only ever had one agency job. The agency was absolute shite but the job, within TRW Electronics, was brilliant. Also I was being paid more than the fully employed staff.

The staff and team leaders were all great to work with and for.

The job became permanent but had to be advertised. Even they guy who I was temping for had to apply as he was working on another site.

We were both passed over for a complete dickhead from Nissan who lasted two months, by which time I had a better job even than that one.

Posted

Which TRW site did you work at?.....A good buddy of mine has only recently retired from there.....he worked at the College Road site in Perry Barr, Birmingham which, coincidentally, used to be the Lucas Training Centre in the 70's where I started off my apprenticeship.

The airbag factory in Rainton Bridge, Co. Durham.

Didn't make airbags, just the electronics. On slow days I would go over and help out in the switch factory across the road.

There is one makes valves (automotive) about three miles from me then another couple in Peterlee, one makes steering gear and the other makes seatbelts.

Took my camera out today for a bit of solid spotting, had a route planned and everything to go past the two old garages I know of. Bloody thing ran out of juice after I took one photo :( Saw some proper decent old bilge too... ah, next time. At least we got a goal!

Was that the McEwan's place? Used to be one on a Thursday evening too, IIRC. All gone now.

What is currently making me grumpy are all these moan posts about the state of other forums (which don't even have the decency to be in this thread) - what is it meant to achieve? Will it make their forum better? Will it make this forum better? No, so quit whinging about it on here!

Either confront them directly or cram it - I want to read about someone driving a Polonez back from miles away and having it empty all its fluids onto the M62, not put up with a load of waffle about how someone on the Internet doesn't like how somebody else on the Internet does things. Go and tell them, perhaps they'll do something about it - perhaps they won't and you'll just have to learn to live with it.

And before anyone comes up with "but we all have an opinion and our voice should be heard", I'm not disagreeing with that - I just think the voices should be out of earshot of this place. If this place is filled with rubbish nonsense posts about other places, nobody is going to be bothered enough to talk about rubbish old cars and this place will be useless. It's like taking a slash in your own bath.

Have done so. Calm yourself...

Have done - it was a single car brand forum that nearly every post was 'How fast my car goes', 'Every car under 150 bhp' is crap', and 'How do I increase the performance of my 1 litre engine' sort of thing. Told the forum owner his site was turning to crap, he replied back and said they would increase the moderation and get rid of the 'speed etc posts', and he was as good as his word, the result is more balanced site.

Funnily enough some forums are receptive to complaints/advice.

One I frequent is moron central when it comes to advertising stuff so I pm'd the moderator (or site owner, or whoever) and suggested some ways to reduce the number of idiots, or at least try and educate them.

The bloke was receptive and made some very good changes to try and stop the mongs and it mostly worked. I suspect being polite and making what you consider are worthwhile considerations probably helps tbh.

Anyhow I'd respectfully suggest this whole 'RR' thing needs to be put behind us all now.

I agree completely. That said, it's disappointing that this otherwise wonderful place also seems to have (unnecessary) self-appointed forum police...

Anyhoo, can we talk shite now? :wink:8)

Hopefully we will bombard the forum with so much shite, that it moves onto a new FRESH page and no one sees it

Since i am getting rather close to being number 1 grumpy ... i will stop posting

Not a grump, just a question.

Why do some threads appear in red on the index and others not?

I have attempted to work out a correlation but failed. At first it seemed to be where I had read the whole thread from first to last post, sequentially but that doesn't hold true. Some stay red for days without me revisiting them, some don't turn red at all :?
