The grumpy thread

If either of mine wanted to be a pit girl or whatever they choose we are fine with it. The only condition is that they CHOOSE it.

What if I choose that they can't be?

Getting a tad lefty / righty here. It's interesting the way political discourse always seems to move toward increasingly opposed views. Divide and rule is one hell of an instrument

Plenty of precedent throughout history.

I only have the one teenage daughter but my experience is eerily similar to that of Tickman.

I also have a teenage son as well, the boys are facing similar pressures nowadays too.

In regards to the Grid Girls/Darts girls, I think they will eventually go the way of Miss World or Rear of the Year. As attitudes change, these things will fall out of fashion. Or they may come back with a vengeance, who knows.

Rear of the Year is a funny one. Congratulations, you have a nice arse. We don't have Knee or the Year, or Eyes of the Year do we?

The thing I find really objectionable is the portrayal of women in modern music........I'm an old fart so don't see much but when I do the whole lot of them (the industry) seem to be saying one thing about 'empowerment' or whatever but doing the opposite.

A bloody long way from Pan People of Hot Gossip that's for sure - somehow they were more 'nicely' sexy but today images seem to be so much more direct. And then you've got the lyrics............

And it is targeted right at the age group we should be trying to protect.

Set against this a few girls on the scene at a sports do seems a pretty small thing to get steamed up about................and I really can't see anyone getting sexually excited about them or thinking they are easy/asking for it because of how they look

I think we should have Cunt of the Year. Piers Morgan being odds-on favoirite

Yeah, the mods will be in to shut us down in a minute...so my final thoughts on this are.

Social media has a lot to answer for, there is no doubt about that and Gen Z are exposed to it in ways that us old fogeys never were.  But its has also helped spread the message against racism, sexism, and any other ism that is your current cause, in ways that are more effective and far reaching than anything we've ever previously known.  Its a great source of support, it enables people to connect with other like-minded people, talk about their feelings, open up in ways that they maybe don't think they can to their parents/friends/whoever.   Of course it can be used as a platform for hatred and bullying too, people can become depressed being constantly surrounded by beautiful people posting about their perfect lives and unending happiness, and we definitely need to teach kids (and adults too) to logout every now and again and spend more time in the real world.  But all things considered its probably a force for good - that's subject to change, but for now I think it is.

So, partly thanks to social media, partly due to other societal influences, attitudes to things like sexism have changed so much even in my lifetime.  The pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that people now make a hobby, and in some cases a living, out of actively looking for examples of it where none exist, just so they can continue the narrative.  So they can perpetuate the idea that you cannot succeed as a women in this country no matter how hard you try because there is this invisible barrier called your gender that will keep you down.  That even if you do everything else right you will never be able to make it past this glass ceiling or get the same opportunities as men.  I think this is mostly bullshit.  Statistics show that the gender pay gap is vastly overstated and figures are usually (deliberately) skewed by including outlying extremes like footballers wages, which are no more representative of the average male earnings than they are females. Once you exclude these they show a pretty level playing field.

I do not believe you will find a fairer society anywhere on earth than right here in the UK in 2018.  We should be celebrating how far we have come, rather than being offended on behalf of someone elses career choice.

The way to combat violence against women is to put the perpetrators of it in prison for a very long time.

Why only violence against women why not every one?

OK I'm taking the wee wee this is a discussion I can add absolutely nothing to :-)

A very valid view. Some music videos are life soft porn, which is acceptable if the target audience is over 18, but it isn't is it?

As for Rear of the Year, I'm not sure that ever recovered from picking Charlotte Church when she was 16. That's a deeply worrying thing, just like the 'she's all grown up!' tabloid stories about teenage girls. *shudder*

It's a valid point though.  All forms of violent assault need to be punished far more severely than they are at the moment imho.

I was just about to mention that example.  That and the self-styled anti-paedo warrior the News of the World publishing a countdown to Ms Church becoming "legal".  The hypocrisy is mind-boggling (until you realise that the media makes money out of it, at which point your mind ceases to be boggled).

I mentioned violence against women because that was the subject matter under discussion, but fear not, I support much tougher sentencing in all areas of the criminal justice system.

I dunno, he's definitely in the running but he's got some pretty stiff competition at the moment.

Violence against women I agree is wrong, it had massively reduced but to cure* that we allowed endless millions of stoneage scum into the country...maybe the wrong thread though.

Can we leave the thinly veiled racism somewhere else please.

I fail to see how a reference to culture is racist? But never mind.

ETA: I know as many decent people who've got modern values & come from such backgrounds as I do stoneage morons. I fail to see how pointing out that some areas/cultures/religions have more of the issue we're discussing then others is racist, it's just how the world is.

It's no more racist than pointing out all the Scots are always drunk & live on fried food but somehow that never gets challenged.

Singling them out 'stoneage scum' is pretty racist to be fair. As sweeping generalisations go, that is quite remarkable.

Also nobody actually mentioned ‘culture’ or religion except you, Hoolie.

Oh here we go....

This is why we can't discuss such things. Free speech only applies to those who agree with the left wing. You lot would rather pretend a problem doesn't exist than talk about it & progress things to resolving it. Saying some cultures/religions/groups have the issue more than others is not racist etc, its merely stating facts. Unless you also think it's racist to things like black people have darker skin colour than whites?

Never mind, I'm away for the weekend anyway & I'm sure this thread will have moved on by the time I get back.

Well, actually DW brought it up, up there where he was climbing down everyone’s throat for reprehensible view towards women, but then saying we had to respect it elsewhere because it’s culture

I wasn't saying that at all but hey, read into it what you will. Pointless arguing really. It was a fairly decent debate until this point, despite some very strongly held different opinions.

Absolute nonsense, and for the record, and for what it’s worth, I’d rather it just wasn’t discussed on here full stop. But then I’m pretty sure you’d already know this sort of crap isn’t welcome here already.

Free speech simply means you cannot be arrested for speaking your mind, regardless of how racist, twattish or downright wrong you are.

Nobody has to host your views. Nobody has to listen to you.

It has rather predictably derailed into the dictionary definition of racism and complaints about freedom of speech, as is the predictable end result of any discussion like this. Shame really.

Edit: I said predictable too much.

SIGH....

FFS. Just had a crash near Maidstone today. I'm Ok and so is the other party. I feel properly shook up though. Fuck. It looked worse than it actually was. The Police were really helpful and told me not to worry as I'd done everything right.

I may not lose my job but I reckon I need to lose myself from it now. I love cars and driving but I don't love this job anymore. I gotta keep on though as I've got bills to pay and I will not keep on going on cap-in-hand/charity case.

It just doesn't get easier does it?

Bad luck Lord S, glad to hear no injuries though.

Accidents must be expecting in that sort of job? the amount of miles you lot do it has to happen at times.

Rumours are they’re taking on at our place, Mo. It could be bollocks, but pm me later and I’ll try and find details of where to send your CV if you like.

Take my hat off to you sticking that job out, sounds like a world of pain to be frank.

I don't know what you do for work, but I assume it means a lot of driving. On the basis that you did nothing wrong (and with the recent experience I have of someone doing nothing wrong but still ending up involved in a crash) I can only offer best wishes to hope you really are OK, and that you make the right decision as to whether you keep driving for a living or not.

Sleep on it. Having a crash will always screw up the rest of your day, regardless of how major/minor it was.
