The grumpy thread

Yeah, if you go back years...

Incorrect, i documented my shite-shifting mission to france on here only last weekend

I did read that, and as usual it was excellent. Not a new thread though, was it?

Edit 2: It says it's 49mm shorter, so IS a new car. They presumably have found the zoom- button on the photocopier.

Or fitted slightly less massive crash structures (the components formerly known as 'bumpers*') to each end...

* Sorry... bumbers...  :D

Ive not done any tinkering for ages, my zx thread has disappeared somewhere!

Posted

Admittedly not a new thread, but I only create a new thread when i have something new and (hopefully) moderately interesting to talk about!!!

Posted

Yeah, me too. It's probably worth grumping about that neither of us have anything amazing to share recently.

Theres a vast amout of bilge on here ATM, I would say 40-50% of all threads turn into the usual standard-issue AS moaning about modern cars/driving standards/social sterotypes/all modern life is rubbish etc. There are loads of vocal shiters who pop up over and over in these moans yet never bother their ass to tell us about their own shite and whats going on with it. Looking at the front page I can see about half a dozen threads that are likely to have any interesting content, the rest are dull-as-ditchwater mindless waffle about fuck all.

Why do you think I disappeared for a bit? Nothing was interesting me and the Piazza thread got sidelined super-quick after I put a bit of graft into it. I was genuinely stunned how quickly it got buried. If you ain't one of the poster children, your shit disappears.

Recently some decent threads have resurfaced (the recovery notes and primrose 75 rescue are the best things I've see on AS in ages) and the banter surrounding Cholmondeley was decent (I wished I could have come, but personal reasons stopped me). Nice to know I'm not the only person who thought the quality of threads in general nose-dived recently.

Some decent threads fall off the front page really quickly. I had a great response to my R75 update the other day but once its gone it gone..

The other week there was a thread about bloody keyless entry that hung about for days, but someones great spotting thread fell off within a few hours!!

The News24 and Stupid Question threads are all too often ignored and people start new threads for a simple question, which really does not need its own thread.

My Tip is always check page 2,3 and 4 for some of the best threads.

I have taken plenty pics but haven't bothered to update my thread as wasn't sure it was worth it to be honest,

Go to your room, Jonathan, and think about your behaviour!

BUT I WANT TO GO ON THE DONKEY RIDE AGAIN

I don't think I've started a thread in ages as really not that much has happened with my cars that can't be posted in here/grin or news 24.

Really who wants to read about my frontera and ST going to a garage for new exhausts fitting or that nothing ever goes wrong with my 950?

I could dig up the one about the suzuki I've got rotting on the drive but I've done exactly fuck all to it in months...

I get a bit annoyed that some seem to think that others get special attention on here. I know my threads often seem very active, but it is also apparent that the person posting most in them is me...

There's a definite rush of interest whenever there's a new collection thread, but it's amazing how swiftly that interest can die. I've only bought two cars this year, so I've seen the effects very clearly. Mind you, I find it a pain in the arse to amend the thread titles so often don't bother.

There is an awful lot of the same rants going around though, as Mr Bollox says. We even have an Off Topic area that a lot of these rants could go in - or this bloody thread! The whole point of the Grumpy thread was to stop folk ranting elsewhere.

/\ I dont think that but when you go back to update a thread the following night and its two pages back it does make you wonder if its worth the bother.

I also have real trouble thinking up catchy thread titles so maybe that's the problem.

It's easier to comment on the click bait new cars r shit, my dad financed a tractor and it fell on him I blame the government threads as it's conversation any fucker can join in on.

The difficulty with the interesting project threads is when you're commenting on them it's a more difficult thing to interact with given the thread is about one person or one car.

The result is the nonsense threads built up to 15 pages in 2 hrs and the project threads don't get millions of comments. This isn't to say loads of folk aren't reading and appreciating them. These are the buried golden nuggets you look forward to reading.  The mr bollox v the k series engine threads are the most entertaining threads on here.

The ebay tat thread works so well as everyone can join in and it's not on one particular subject yet it's still about cars.

I've been struggling a bit on here in the last few months too, It's been mostly more modern stuff that i have no interest in, I've updated a few threads on here (My Dolly one and the old newspaper adverts) and they shot of the page with no comments.

Still, at least it's not quite as depressing as all the political posts on Facebook at the moment.

Ebay tat and News 24 are the best threads on here, so I'll always check those out if nothing else.  I'm a lazy arse that gets others to my oily work these days, so my updates tend to only be worthy of a quick post in News 24 e.g. look at me I cleaned the Cavalier today, or see what shite I bought this week.  So when we're going through a period of high dross content such as now, I'll just focus on those two threads and any collection capers.

I do read the quality stuff like the Piazza thread, but often find posting a comment such as 'top work' a bit naff and pointless so just do a like instead.  Maybe I should comment, then they won't drop off the front page so quickly....

Please do, I'd rather see a front page full of good posts followed by appreciation than some of the arse we're getting right now.

Perhaps too many raffles also....

Maybe that there's enough content flowing through every day now to perhaps expand the number of threads per page now if it doesn't look too messy.

Like what has been said, I do miss a good tinkering thread even though I know very little about mechanics in a relative sense compared to many of you on here. I only drive a modern, and I know that won't be of much interest, and I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between a pinto and a CVH other than it's an engine made by Ford. Alas I'm in a minority of 2 in my peer group who care a lot about cars (the other 1 is a big BLARG man, and his mum owns a Wolesley 1300, but isn't so interested in this place), and I was never able to learn off my Dad as he didn't really know either, so I don't really feel confident about fettling with it.

I've managed to sidetrack myself a little there, but going back to what I was saying, tinkering.... haven't seen RatDat recently, and I'd love to know how he's getting on with that epic Datsun for instance. The FSO boys have gone a bit quiet too, and I'd love to know how much progress has been made on the green Polenez of much rust.

In the couple of years that I've been on here, I've noticed there's been a few phases, BXs, Ovlovs, at the minute it seems to be XJS', which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does limit the mutual group interest sometimes. Just need to fight back with your own shite I guess. Or in my case get the stones to buy some in the first place!

Please don't interpret this as a rant, it's not, I love this place, and it's got me through some absolute shite times, it just ebbs and flows a bit sometimes, and that's the way with such a wide ranging (luxobarges -  205 Ds) minute interest.

I greatly admire tinkering threads. I think I'm hopeless at them compared to the masters. When I'm getting pissed off that something won't work, the last thing I want to do is stop, clean caked-in muck off my hands and dig out the camera. When stuff is actually working, the last thing I want to do is stop, clean caked-in muck etc etc. Mr Bollox is bloody superb at them, as is the much-missed Ratdat. Plenty of others seem to manage it too. Thank you all.

I agree, the idea of anyone getting 'special treatment' on here is patently ridiculous. What exactly is the 'special treatment' and who is administering it? The entire rest of the forum? Moderators bumping rubbish threads just because they are from some goldenballs shiter? Come off it. Seeing as the forum is a collection of individuals posting up pretty much whatever old bo11ox they like, I dont see what form a supposed 'special treatment' could even take.

The problem is simply bored folk with no shite activity in their lives (or none that they can actually be bothered telling us about) mindlessly posting rant after rant about absolutely piss all.

I will say that the eBay thread is some of the finest content on the entire interweb mind you.

I'm just a little laden down with work right now. Today was going to be a bit of emailing, and then once people are happy I'm active I was going to get the SAAB out and sort a few niggles - dash bulbs, the headliner has come down, needs front brakes doing, there's a blow on the exhaust. Maybe even a bit of paint on the front bumper.

Work then got hectic so I only did one thing. And I'm not sure that photos of me replacing the battery in the keyfob is shite content.
