Those shiny reflective things at the extremities of you vehicle are for checking your hair/eye-bags/bogeys ONLY once inside the M25.

They may also be used as combination cat's whiskers/jousting weapons when there are parked cars on both sides of the road and German car jockeys 'need' more than their share of available carriageway.

Why do TV programme makers insist on putting shitty stock music in documentaries?

+1

I often find it difficult to watch documentaries now. They tend to last an hour but they have half an hour's material at best. The other half hour is taken up by recapping, lingering shots of something loosely related to the subject and tantalising mentions of the interesting bit that you never see because the snail's pace of the delivery puts you to sleep.

Here's a tip- if you only have half an hour's worth of material, make a half hour programme. Or do some fugging research to fill the hour.

Bit late on this, but the motor trade (I worked for a big dealer group for a year, and a small one for 8 months):Sales - if you are very good, very amenable/cheerful or (sometimes, less so these days) very aggressive, you can make a lot of money. Sales managers are generally very aggressive/demanding people. In dealerships owned by dealer groups/companies/manufacturers turnover of sales people is very high.Dealership general managers/dealer principals are often either accountants or promoted sales managers.Service - Very stressful, the customer generally dosen't want to be there, because their car has gone wrong, or theres nothing wrong with it and they are being charged loads of money for a service, which most customers don't see the value in.Mechanics are isolated from this a bit, generally the least happy are the most junior who get shat on regularly, the most happy are the specialists who the workshop manager always uses to fix a difficult problem 'We'll need Dave, he's the only one any good with 7 series electronics...etc), and as a result has to be kept relatively happy.Parts - Tend to get ignored or blamed constantly by service in most of the places I have seen. The exception is where the trade sales are the bulk of the income, the parts manager generally has more power.Bodyshop - stress, stress and more stress, don't even go there, the only people who survive/prosper are the two or three highly skilled painters without whom the place would die, (and could walk into another job tommorrow), and therefore they can tell the mgt to stick it at any time. As a result, they often get to do things their way.So the worst jobs are Service/Bodyshop managers, as all the stressed reception staff pass up all complaints to you, and you have also have the department's finances to balance, or Workshop managers/coordinators, who bear the brunt of the service/bodyshop manager's stress. I saw two service managers retire for health reasons in a year at the group I worked at - they were not very old either.Try and a get a job in a family owned one-branch type dealership - often the family management is not very particulary good or very stingy with wages, but they are generally more agreeable places to be.

changed a bit since I did it then....

Senior managers! Need to do an evaluation of jobs to adjust wages up and down accordingly? Worried your pay might go down too? Simply make it so it doesn't apply to you!

Posted

^ Job Evaluation, great isn't it?Analyst “Does your job require you to carry out the following duties?â€ÂEmployee “Yes, I have to carry out those tasks on a daily basis.â€ÂAnalyst “Sorry I can only put no there."Employee "And why's that then?"Analyst "I can only put yes for managers."Employee “But they don’t go through this process do they?â€ÂAnalyst “True, but I can still only put no for you.â€ÂEmployee "So why ask the question?"Analyst " We have to, it's part of the process."Also comes complete with the moderation get out clause:A post accrues sufficient points as defined by the JE process to be awarded a certain salary. Management decide they don’t wish this to happen and invoke the moderation “processâ€Â. The post is then simply given absolutely any salary they feel like. Simple.Someone here put in a Freedom of Information Request to try and expose this farce. Unfortunately it wasn’t pursued to its ultimate conclusion.

Anthony G, you are right on the money with Service Departments-after 12 years at BMW, 6 1/2 as Service Manager, I had to resign before my wife left me or the stress made me kill someone..and I am generally quite laid back. It was OK while it was family owned, and the man who owned the group sat in an office at the top of the stairs...

It was the promoted sales managers who thought they were accountants that gave me the most grief. Especially when the dealer group in question was financed by venture capital. Lots of late nights in Excel sorting that mess out...

Windows Vista is shite. My monitor has thrown it's hand in.I'm using the telly for the bedroom for a monitor.SWMBO isn't happy.I'm brassic lint and can't afford a new monitor. The telly/monitor situation is shite because half the bastard screen isn't visible unless I arse about pressing F11.Someone owes me money and they're taking the piss now*.I've spnt God knows how long pissing about with my fishtank, listing all the stuff that goes with it and taking pictures all for the knobhead who is supposed to be interested in it not even replying to an e-mail I sent him.*This won't last long. I'm now getting very annoyed about it and little does the gobshite know I hold a few aces up my sleeve.

I know exactly what this is like, three years as a Service Manager and I handed my notice in, I did quite alot of unpaid overtime especially at the end of each month making sure targets were met. Nobody would help, everyone was only interested in how little work they could get away with and it was making me ill, I thought fuck it if you lot don't give a fuck I'll leave you to it, a year later the workshop closed.I have no desire to get a management position, sure the money is better but I'd rather have less hassle and less responsibility....and paid overtime.Biggest mistake I made was working for a small company-the owner was a twat who thought the staff had nothing better in their lives than work. I'll not work for a small company with a handfull of staff again if I can help it.

^^ It really depends on the owners. The family I worked for for 15 years were absolutely spot on, they treated the staff (usually 7 or 8 of us) like family and if times were hard, they would go without pay themselves to make sure the staff got paid, if times were good we would all see a nice bonus. :)The place had a freindly atmosphere, the staff worked hard when they had to, had a laugh when it was quiet and the staff turnover was as low as anywhere I've ever seen. This wasn't some sort of hippy comune, it was a motor factor with a big turnover. Then one day, they anounced they had sold up and the new owners were taking over on Monday......The rest is a very different story.

Whoosh, cheers gents will pm you.Regarding either big or small companies being better to work for, I don't think there's a set pattern.Having worked for some small firms, some were desperately fucking dreadul and I'd rather be on the dole than work for them again and some (including a one man band) were brilliant.Ditto large companies, though it would seem to appear it depends on the 'quality' of the managers.

+2!Windows 7 is also shite. But seeing as I have killed every computer with XP ever (well I have 5 broken ones sat here waiting to sort out) I will have to live with it for now.
