Yes it is. TBH, it needs to go in for a weldathon anyway, so I might just take the hit and get this sorted at the same time. My local Landy specialist is reasonable and they like working on it apparently (I am pretty sure I pay their rates bill for the year so I think I know why!), so I shall turn over to them. Just annoying when what should be an easily serviceable item for the novice mechanic turns into an expensive ballache. Better than needing a new ZF autobox though, I suppose.

Cheers, thanks for that. Nice one and to everyone who has jumped on the bandwagon.

I'm not that bothered about the insurance rise, it was simply unexpected at a time when my money is low and I have other stuff to pay for which will basically leave me completely potless. This is what my grump was supposed to be getting at.

£295 is not a lot of money for legal cover, but at the moment it is a lot of money to spend in one go. Also, I was not blaming 'England' for my woes, just my current situation.

Your problem is clearly a Rover 800 addiction and that's not going to go away whether you're in Britain, Belgium or Benidorm.

So very true. If it does get too much then I will sell the ones I don't need, but I feel like I will reach a point where I can give them time and money, it just won't be now....

I guess I should be greatful (and I am) that I am in some form of full-time work now working with people who are nice and down to earth to work with near home, so I earning money.

One thing I did leave out is that I reckon the KV6 has started the inevitable HGF. Its been dropping coolant. I was also advised that if I wanted to take a car over with me, I should concentrate on getting the Mk2 827 Sterling on the road and parking up/breaking the KV6. That is going to cost to put the 827 back on road so I may not be able to take a car with me abroad.

Let the potlessness commence so I can make a new start on saving again.

I understand exactly what Lord Sterling is going through. I have five old Austins and have just agreed to buy another! They drain my cash but I really don't like parting with anything. My Austin A55 Cambridge is still gathering dust in my parents garage, midway through a hefty restoration, but I don't know when I can finish it off realistically. On the other hand I don't want to sell it as I'll never get back what I've spent on it, and it'll probably never get finished by anyone else. I'm hoping that when the lease runs out on this place then I can find somewhere with a garage (or, at the least, a decent size driveway) so I can finish it off. I refuse to let it become yet another 'UNFINISHED PROJECT BARN FIND', but I need to at least splash a bit of paint over it and fit the engine and gearbox back in soon as the garage it's stored in is being demolished.

The thing with me is a silly thing that I've explained before. I become too attached to my cars, I kind of like 'knowing' the fact that that I own some rather rare Rovers instead of dreaming of owning one that I did for a long time. I refuse to let circumstance force me to part with my cars because when will I ever get the chance again to own a similar car? It probably doesn't make sense to a lot of people but then I don't live my life according to what other people think I should have.

They are not as numeruous as they once were so really now there will be point in life which are trying, I've been through this before anyway and saw no way out of it then. But now at least I have the knowledge that I have a wage coming in next month, it's just until then I'm going to manage my money very carefully.

Car related grump on Ebay. Saw a car I really liked with a tempting BIN price. Then someone bid and the BIN disappeared. Phoned the seller and agreed a deal over the phone for the BIN price earlier today, saying I'd come up Sunday morning with the cash. Asked him if I could leave a deposit but he declined, saying that instead he'd leave the listing running and if for some reason I didn't like the car he wouldn't have pulled the plug for nothing.

Anyway I've just checked and it's had another bid taking it over what the BIN price was, and there's still seven days left to run! Absolutely gutted. Tried phoning the seller to find out where I stand and his phone is either engaged or switched off, I can't get through to him.

I told a couple of friends about this acquisition and knew I shouldn't have jinxed it :(

An old spoiler's trick that, Dicky. I had a few 'buy it now's in my line of sight in the past, someone would bid and the BIN would go. Quite often if the seller is new to ebay you can mail them and some will agree to honour the BIN.

I had it very recently, the seller (not new to ebay) got a bit cocky and said he was hanging on until listing ended and then it went for less, which I found highly amusing.

If you get bored, check out the first bidder when the bidding is over and 99% of the time it's not the 'winner' usually because it's someone spoiling it for others or hoping to get it cheaper.

Posted

Yeah I'm hoping he's going to honour the agreement, he did sound like a nice bloke to be fair, and a fellow Counties club member. Unfortunately mailing is difficult as his son has set up the listing on his behalf, with a mobile number in the description for the owner.

It's just annoying because I've got arrangements to make to collect this and I'm not sure what's happening now.

I have t say he was probably hedging his bets leaving it on, and full knew that in the hope what has happened happened.

I went through the back door (so to speak) when I got my 609D recovery truck from ebay. The seller mentioned a buy it now but no contact details (outside of eBay) so I tracked the garage down, rang them up, offered them the money and set off pronto. he agreed to the price (£1,000) and as I was sat in his office sorting the paperwork out he went to end it on eBay. It was up to something like £1,470, he must have been kicking himself but there you go.

Not necessarily. Ive sold stuff "off the bay" but keep the auction running til I have the cash in hand as I have been burned before when selling a caravan-- lots of "take it off ebay and I'll have it tonight for ££££" and like a prat I did, only to have a cock jockey piss me about.

He did say to me "As far as I'm concerned the car's now yours" and told me he would collect me from the station and take me to see the car in his garage so I could start it from cold. I'm just hoping he doesn't get greedy and think he could get more leaving it on. I just wish I could get up there before Sunday, but it's not possible. He knows I'm genuine (or at least thinks I am as I told him about my car collection), knows I have the cash waiting and could end up with a timewaster if he leaves it on. He also said to me that if someone offered him about £500 more than I offered he would be mad not to take it, and would let me know if this happened.

So sick of this 'all men are shit' culture we live in.

Ebay seller wants to let the auction run now, apparently his son has told him it's against ebay rules to remove an auction once the price has gone above the BIN price (or some bullshit). He did say when I said I'd started making the arrangements that he would talk to his son and see if they could arrive at a solution, but I'm really not holding out much hope. I'm so disappointed.

He also said the high bidder is that 'Sussex Classic Cars' - of course!

If you think he's done the dirty on you there are ways around that.

Buyer of my house: OK to send a roofer round to take a look, when will be convenient to you?

Me: Fine, can't do (last Sat), can do Sun.

Roofer 1 turns up 9.30 am Sat asking what I want done to the roof. 'Nothing' sez I 'you should have your instructions from my buyer and by the way, you'll have to go away and come back another time because I told him today was no good.'. Roofer 1 fails to call back to rearrange. Buyer gets pissed off and organises a different roofer for 10 am today because I'm around. Has roofer 2 been/is he here? Has he/is he fuck.

At this rate the buyer will just have to sodding well wait until after completion (he's already had a builder round and a full structural survey, so he knows what he's getting).

Have called a local charity to collect furniture next Fri: if they turn their noses up at it (ffs, I've been homeless - well, sofa surfing, I'd be bloody grateful for anything clean and usable if I was on my uppers) then I'll have the friend who's helping me move shove it in the van and we'll stop off at the tip before heading out.

I'm so looking forward to moving house. It sounds Gr5 fun.

I've dumped stuff outside for anyone to help themselves too before which has worked well. That said we've picked up much more stuff this way than we've got rid of.

Lesson learned: NEVER try to buy and sell a house at the same time. Purchase looks like it's fallen through (still arguing, long and boring story) so have rented somewhere so's not to lose my sale. I' shall be moving again within the next few months ... at least I won't be trying to relocate 2 hours away though. Buyer has been good/patient about waiting for completion, hence me trying to be co-operative about him sending his tradespeople round.

I live set back from the road/no passing traffic so difficult to leave stuff outside, although I might well do just that if charidee doesn't take it. I'm not fucking round with Freecycle again, it's worse than sodding e-bay for messers.

EDIT: roofer now nearly an hour late. He's got 10 minutes before I phone the buyer.

Remember last week's Blingo-related saga with the clutch, starter motor and battery? The alternator's gone now!

Bless it, I cannot complain. I think it's just compensating for costing me the square root of sod all over the past seven years and 90000 miles...

Tis sound advice, the 'rents attempted that... Ended up selling their house only to find that the seller of the next one, a vicar no less, had lied to the mortage company and the sale fell through, cue 18 months in rented.

Well 2014 is starting grumpily, I have got down to a sensible family daily, a 4x4 I probably won't need and a motorless motorcycle that I will never be able to afford to restore.

Yup it's staying on. To say I'm fucked off is an understatement, if I make a deal I always stick to it and expect others to do the same. A man and his word and all that.

I won't be buying it now out of principle, because I won't deal with someone who's fucked me around as much as this guy has. I'm actually hoping he gets a timewaster and comes grovelling back to me, so I can tell him he had his chance and blew it.

So I'm still looking for a nice, big 50's saloon with column change if anyone knows of anything!
