What made them do it?

There is/was a brown late '70s/early '80s 911 living near me recently. Awkward place to stop to try and get a spot photo though. Haven't seen it of late annoyingly.

Steve McQueen had taste.

When I was shopping around pre-S12 there was a two tone Celica Supra on the Celica OC boards. Brown with darker brown over the bodykit and beige interior. Can't recall the specifics but the darker colour was "mahogony" ! It had been nicknamed "conker" and had gone through about 12 owners in a year despite being immaculate, low mileage and usually about £1500 (peanuts for an immaculate Celica Supra, granted Auto-box). I figured everyone bought it because it was cheap but couldn't live with the colour or something....

I suppose it's now that I should throw my hands up and admit that the other 911 I had was 'Chiffon White' - or 'Salford net curtain' as one wag put it.

This isn't it, but it's the same bloody awful colour.

I suppose I should own up to one of the best brown cars I ever owned.

*with photo of chocolate porker*Sums this thread up, to me. As a schoolboy of the 1980s, that 911 strikes a chord (bedroom wall poster-styleee) - but who the feck ordered it in chocolate brown?

the other 911 I had was 'Chiffon White'

Now that's the ticket - a proper Miami Vice-style colour. Mind you, I agree with some of the earlier sentiments about brown cars being kept immaculate by stoic, methodical souls. In spite of that life-affirming mental image, I think the dark brown MG Midget with federal Landcruiser ride height in the photo on page 1 is fashioned from purest ROFL.

Somebody who didn't want a car that looked like a teenage boy's bedroom wall poster?

I do totally understand/agree with the original post but I do really like brown in general, and think it really suits some cars. I dont like beige in general but again I think it really suits some cars.. However, I dont think I'd have the balls to spec a new car in brown or indeed beige unless I had money growing in't garden.

Best dark brown car I had was this Omega. Wish I still had it...

Best crap 70's colour car I have now is my 510 which is more of a baby poo brown...

Could have saved a lot of money and bought a brown Escort L, if that was the main concern. Still, it's as well we don't all follow the norms of fashion - the way things are, the Autoshite fans of 2020 will inherit nothing more than silver Nissans, silver Kias, Mercs, Fords etc. Though maybe its apparent ubiquitous popularity will make silver the autoshite colour of the next generation, and perhaps prompt a debate of its own in years to come :?:

Then prepare to PYSL, because someone has improved a Celica by having it refinished in Autoshite house colours:

I had 3 old Talbots over a period, two Avengers and a Sunbeam that were painted metallic dark Brown. Amusingly, the colour was known as "Bark" The Talbots were old dogs too....

A possible stereotype but what are the chances the owner is Portuguese?:lol::lol: She very spesh!

Brown is one of the best colour for thems. That one was mine, it's the brownest thing you can imagine.....

As for the original point of the thread, it's not just colour that makes you think "WTF??" years later. Accessories, options, later additions all make me wonder about previous owners. My Beetle was 27 years old when I bought it, for 26 years and 6 months it had been driven by a little old lady.... yet it had rather expensive (in 1973) alloys, a set of Hella driving lamps, go-faster stripes and a rear vent cover - all pretty sporty stuff.

Haha! I believe the owner also had this a couple of years back

Screamed "Portuguese" at me too, but actually no!

Anyhoo, to return to the topic, here's a very early Nova, just like one a friend had ten or more years ago, except not barried with SR spoilers and three-spoke TSW alloys. Seen earlier in 2009, but not looking in best of health:

Oh hell, aye. Certainly not just colour, it's spec, model, the lot.I quite like brown on some cars and think that Shadow Mk2 (earlier in the thread) doesn't look too bad at all.

You have got to love Brown (The colour, Not Gordon), My first car was this Brazil Brown Nova 1.2 Swing, All my mates took the piss but it didn't stop them asking for lifts, and the bonus of Brown is that it hides rust well!.

My dad's mate has a Brown Porsche 911 as well, He bought it new when he was 19 or 20 back in 1975, It on a P, I haven't seen him for a few years but i would love to see it so i can take a photo, I really suited it.

This is my favorite Brown Porsche 911 photo, Now you can't say that this isn't sexy!

It's an AWFUL colour but I love it!

It's called Mace according to the original invoice, but I can't remember seing another this colour...

I knew the old lady who bought it new, I could never bring myself to ask why she chose that particular colour though! Seems odd to me but I'm glad of it now!

Everybody who sees it asks when I'm getting it resprayed a better colour. How silly.

My Uncle Ray had a turd brown Renault 5, wittily referred to as 'the poo car', not only because it was brown, but because the registration plate was something like POO 347R. He still has the plate somewhere.

PLEASE PLEASE no bodykits, no minilites, no alloy window winders, no "100% BMW FREE" stickers, no headlamp peaks, wooden dashboards, bonnet stripes, black and silver number plates or any of that wank that has ruined every other mini in the country!

Only standard basic mini's are 8)

Agreed with the minis, original ones look buff.I have seen quite a few originals lately, theres one in my spotted thread which is the nicest i have seen for some time.Any normal mini from 75-88 really does it for me. Theres a hideous modified one round here on an A plate which is a convertable as well, and its been repainted Subaru Electric Blue, eurgh. As for the question as to why old people would buy Volvo 340s?They were safe. And fairly reliable.Has anyone ever seen one in brown for that matter?I like brown cars, Metros look good in a warm brown.Although saying the Volvos were reliable, I do recall an OFAH episode where they rescued a rather rich woman in a 340........

Ther's no way I'd put any of that on it! The only mods it'll get is some ignition bits that work and a proper style front number plate. No wide arches here! And who you calling basic?! It's an HL FFS! It's got carpets and beige stripes and everything! No radio though, it's not that fancy.I'll get some better pics when I eventually coax it out of the garage, hopefully early in the new yaer. It's been there since 2006...
