"marvin" an austin metro city x, i bought it for, i think £600 around 5 and 1/2 year ago as a short term stop gap cos it was cheap, cheerful and really good on pez. and at some point it got under may skin, so much so i hope this too is one i won't have to sell.

and finally, the daily driver, "elsie rover" had this one 2 year to the day. had the clutch and hydraulics done on it, i find it a comfortable cruiser. its ok on derv, not remarkable but that isn't the point. it replaced a nissan k12 micra, which was horrid, just horrid

And my Coupe which I have owned for 11 years. Not the most interesting car ever but this one will stay until it is either crashed or I die first. Likely the same for the Corsa which I have had 6 years. A lot of people laugh at it and I get quite a lot of H8 for it but they're getting rare in good condition now and I get a lot of compliments amongst the ridicule.

I bought this in 2007 for Mrs N's 40th, she loves it, I think it was painted in Solihull about 23 years before it was built. The rear wings have been painted twice, they and the front arches need doing again, all of the lacquer is lifting. Engineered like no other.....

post-17414-0-39787900-1471768021_thumb.jpeg

This joined the family in 2009, it's a 1.2 Lounge and we bought it on the scrappage scheme. Since then I've lost track of who has 'owned' it , various offspring have used it and it's currently parked up , as they're all using proper shite, I'm so proud.

post-17414-0-99887200-1471768511_thumb.jpeg

Two lady owners from new, no rot at all, (even now, one of my brothers had a good look last week) 2 door ,no sunroof. If this was a 325 it would be worth a fortune, unfortunately it's a 316 auto. Eldest daughter used it when home from uni to commute locally to Costco weekend job, then got a job that entailed 40 mile commute so started usin the Fiat. It's been parked on the drive for 4 years waiting for me to find a rotten manual e36 328i- could soon be MOT'd and sold for someone else to fantasise about creating a trackday*/drift weapon/garden ornament.

Just checked and it has been all change again since I last updated here and will probably change again before the year is out. Currently the Silver Spirit and the Peugeot 204 diesel are the classics with a few more moderns for the day to day stuff.

The Rolls is for sale but the Peugeot owes me way too much money it will have to stay for a while.

Ok, the next current car to join was another for Mrs N, I wanted a Disco 3, she wanted an ML, we bought a Freelander 2. At the time 3 1/2 years ago it cost the same as a same age Disco, but I was scared of the horror stories and bills. I haven't regretted that decision even though it's had 2 clutch slave cylinders , whilst the box was out it seemed silly not to replace the clutch twice too, only 1 DMF though!

It's been used as a family car, been to France about 6 times, towed trailers, cruises at 90 all day and is probably worth about the same as a same age Disco3- soon to go , probably to be replaced with a Merc R Class.post-17414-0-58264900-1471773219_thumb.jpeg

Next Frogmerde, not at all unpleasant little 206 cc, I normally shy away from anything French but after pressure from kids, I've got this, apart from a broken fuel line, that the RAC diagnosed as a crank position sensor, then a mechanic* said was the fuel pump, causing me to replace both before discovering petrol pissing out onto the floor. Apart from that it's been great. MOT'd on Monday- no advises.

I missed the Arosa, seems 1.0 Arosa is the cheapest car to insure. During extensive research using actual registrations on compare the meerkat etc showed that even identical1.0 Lupos were 20% more- go figure. As a consequence 3 of my daughters have had this as a first car. Last year for MOT I spent more tha it's worth on a complete exhaust and cat-it's going to be around for a few years yet.

post-17414-0-06209900-1471774367_thumb.jpeg

This is what pays for everything else- it's getting on a bit and I may have to replace it later this year. The only problem is a plastic seated 11 reg 220 for £8k is not appealing after this soft leathered 3.0, just because Mercedes changed the shape of the lights.

Unfortunately since this splendiferous clean it's been dinged in the car park near the office by someone who kindly drove off afterwards, leaving a nice scruffy corner to the passenger-side rear bumper above the exhaust. I can only hope the towbar of doom ensured they had worse damage than my car did when they drove off.

This has also meant the tasteful* chrome strip is coming loose and doesn't seem to want to click back into place.

Also the lacquer is now peeling off the passenger-side front alloy wheel.

Adding more miles to it now, too, all on countryside roads which are lovingly blemished with potholes and ruts, so while the last MOT and service passed without drama I am not holding out hopes for the next one in June. Volvos do love nomming front suspension due to weighing fourty eight thousand tons and being FWD - and this also gives it the turning circle of the Jahre Viking.

I can confirm what someone else said about them in that they have a very notchy and somewhat vague gearchange which seems to get worse over the course of an afternoon of site visits (particularly x into 1st and 1st into 2nd).

Still, the 2.0 20v light pressure turbo (180hp or so) is a very good engine with a nice five cylinder warble that is seriously making me think about a fruity exhaust or something, although my concern would be that something along those lines would introduce a drone at 70mph whereas right now it's wonderfully quiet - the noise insulation is excellent.

I'm eyeing a V50 as my next car at some point next year - probably after its next service and MOT in June - and I have to wonder why the 2.0 20v turbo didn't find its way into that model too. The V50 gets the 2.4 20v 170hp unit which is as old as them hills, and I suspect this engine is quite punchy in a lighter car like the V50. But the turbo does give a nice polite shove above a certain rpm which I think the naturally aspirated unit lacks, although I've only driven the 140hp version of the 2.4 so perhaps I should hold judgement until I've driven the more powerful unit in a lighter car.

Anyway, this rambling analysis on my hateful modern knobmobile has been brought to you by Bored on a Sunday.

Five motors in my care right now, which is too many of course, and not enough. Which is the 'shiters dilemma I guess.

The Suzuki wifemobile is the newcomer. Much of our driving is on single track lanes for which it is close to ideal. Apart from the irritating nodding ride (caused by sitting high just in front of the rear axle in a short wheelbase) it is a comfy and relaxing drive. SWMBO loves it, she had got fed up with the old Subaru that I had lumbered her with and of course, when I bought the Suzuki I wasn't driving the Subaru so didn't p.ex it...  I bought the Legacy 9 years and about 100,000 miles ago (on the re-bound after Renault) and it has got to that awkward stage in it's life cycle where almost any repair will cost more than it is worth. A good old friend of a car in a dull sort of way. Sorn'd right now pending me doing something about keeping it or selling it or ignoring it. Needs a good thrash to clean up the brakes is all.

post-17481-0-70628700-1471786778_thumb.jpg

The Honda Civic was Mrs Me's before the Subaru, from new, and it has been returned after 18 months with youngest. He had it maintained at Halfords so when it came back to us there was work to do. Needs MOT and a family conference about it's future. Basically as reliable as a Seiko watch, it has had a tough life and coped with everything except Halfords suspension skills. Not worth much, these Hondas, but excellent basic shite transport.

Officially my "hobby car" (??) the Honda Insight is working perfectly right now, thrives on use, needs paint and somewhere for me to play with it indoors in the winter.  http://autoshite.com/topic/17934-honda-inshite/page-4

So to the real Shite; my wonderful Connect Van. No contest, this is the keeper. It's a rare petrol (not lpg/petrol). According to "Not Many Left" only about 1 Connect per 1000 is petrol engined. Has proper van ambience up front unlike the latest Transits (which make me feel like I am sat in a Lexus) Still low miles for a van at 60,000 odd, about half of those since I bought it three years ago. Treated it to a set of new Michelins, belts and plugs this year. Need some down time with it to re-paint the (galvanised) sills and pump more Bilt Hamber gloop into it's crevices. Oh, and to replace the rear bumper I flattened, reversing into my house.

Only 3 left,

This C200 auto came from an ad on the blue forum , bought the night before oldest daughter was off on holiday with some mates and they wouldn't fit in the Fiat 500, cufrrently in the care of next daughter down after she killed the Rover 600. I had to do the rear pads last week and filled a black bag with crap, before I could even move the seat enough to drive it !

post-17414-0-16772100-1471786902_thumb.jpeg

The e34 is a 520i auto that's had 1 driver from new, it was his company car for 3 years then he retired and bought it. Apart from lacquer peel , it's in great condition and drives like new, ie slow and thirsty.

It's days could be numbered due to space shortage, but I'd like to keep it.

The Audi has only been on the strength for 3 weeks, but it's done its job taking us to France for a holiday. Can't see a reason to keep it as I prefer the e34, currently for sale. I haven't put it on here because I'm trying to make a drink on it. already had an email from someone who missed it when I bought it, sounds promising. Also bought some wheeltrims and wheels for a tenner on eBay but the seller is not responding!

They've both appeared elsewhere on here.

The Land Rover is a 1985 earlyish 90 with the 2.5 petrol engine, bought off Scruff on here; it's my modern and economical car, been my daily driver now for nearly a year (replacing my 2013 Suzuki Alto). I've probably done about 12,000 miles in it but refuse to work out what it has cost me in petrol. It does everything and goes everywhere.

post-3477-0-15439300-1471797985_thumb.jpg

This is it when I first had it, when it was a bit shinier

The Bentley is a 1949 Mk V1 with bodywork by H.J.Mulliner (one of 125 built in this style) a replacement for my Smart Roadster. It's a bit of a disreputable, decaying, shed with dreadful paint and a ruined interior, but structurally and mechanically sound. A slightly accidental ebay purchase (for which I blame Junkman) when I was really looking for a Volvo 240 estate or FX4 Taxi. It is currently making a dent in the drive whilst waiting for the fuel tank to be repaired, which is ready on Monday, apparently.

Relatively dull fare here after some, all German 6 cylinder and silver! I don't even like silver... Sorry if pics are shit, all taken at dusk tonight.

1999 BMW 530d, bought last year with a grenaded box and 233k for my son, it's now my daily and a whisker off 250k. Comfy, quiet, smooth, rapid but smokes like Dot Cotton on boost. i've just spent a nice* Sunday morning welding new exhaust flexis into the down pipes.

Next up is a 2000 BMW Z3 2.8, bought from a friend 4  years ago and has led a pretty blameless life here. It also has a set of 17" black OZ wheels and a BMW hard top as well but currently gets little use, I should sell it but it was a Cat C in 2011 so probably less chew to keep, plus I never tire of hearing it on full song through the gears. 80 something K miles when bought, 100k now.

post-17633-0-01724200-1471807823_thumb.jpg

Lastly the thing that has largely replaced the Z as a toy, a 1989 Merc 300SE bought late last year. It came from a pig farm where it had lain since 2008, it didn't take a lot to get tested but a fair bit of fettling now it's a goer again. It's a bobby basic one, - air con, cruise, leather, alloy wheels, electric mirrors and seats are just some of lixuries it doesn't have. :-D . It has settled into a very useable toy, smooth, quiet and easy to drive if not park.

Bought with 194K it now on 197k and this pic shows the worst grot, above the bumper. In this world of run flat tyres it shows it's age with spaces for 3 full size spares, ready for it's next life as a Taliban Taxi!

Your 300SE reminds me of the events of the 1st of August 1989, one of the directors takes delivery of a blue 300SE G64 PFC. He was pretty smug that he'd managed to get an S Class when his fellow directors had XJ40s and high spec W124s and e34s. The lack of allys and leather he could live with, but no one had told him he wasn't getting aircon! The transport manager almost lost his job, in the end we had an aftermarket setup fitted- cost about £2000 and came out of the transport departments budget!

These 2 honeys have been resting between engagements for some time, but the Rov is returning to commuting duties next month so I've invested* £91 in a thermostat kit (leaking), strut top bearings (comedy tyre wear), and service items.  I'm still getting over a broken arm which has been extremely frustrating (can't drive nor do any tinkering), so I've been having a sit in this occasionally, enjoying the big soft seats and general pleasantness.
