The "They forgot to stop making them" thread

Not quite true. The 1300 was meant to fill the rather large gap between the Herald and the 2000 which it did. The Toledo was the Herald replacement which of course used most of the same bodyshell but was mechanically simpler with a more basic interior.  The whole 1300/1500/Toledo/Dolomite story is a long and twisted one. The fact you could buy a Dolomite in 1981 is laughable when you look at what else was for sale then, it was still essentially a 1960s car. I'm not knocking them, I own a 1300TC, but by 1981 they were way out of date.

I think there was a planned model to replace the Dolomite with (& possibly the Marina too) ion the mid 1970s, but BL's woes meant it didn't go into production.

Who buys a car over 96 months? It would be effectively a banger after 96 months at the end. It’s especially hard in America as if you haven’t a car in a lot of places you are absolutely fucked. Even going for a pint of milk would be a half a day job if you lived in a rural area.

Who buys a car over 96 months?

People who desperately stretch to buy a car or truck they really can't afford.  Every redneck who wants a blinged-out King Ranch Edition Ford F150, despite the fact they live in their Grandma's trailer and only make $10.00 an hour at Wal-Mart.  The working poor who still refer to themselves as "Middle Class", never mind the mountains of evidence to the contrary.  Those who still buy in to the delusion of the American Dream.  Those who have yet to catch on to the fact America is totally fu&%ed!!!

Ford galaxy

The rented one I have is an 18 or 19 and ford.de have 20s on their site

Bro in law bought an 09 one with the 2.5 Volvo engine in it new and my one is just a facelift of that one with more kit and more modern engines bit like the MK4 polo they just updated the basic design from 96 till 2014 was it?

The current Galaxy and S-Max date back to 2008/9 ish and are a Ford only design.

The previous model was a partnership with Volkswagen and also available as a Seat.

TM-1 was the joint Triumph-Morris project to replace the Dolomite and Marina but I can't remember whether it came before or after SD2. There was the Michelotti restyled Dolomite too and I'm sure AROnline has chapter and verse on all of these. Come to think of it, the Marina/Ital is a candidate for this thread: it was intended as a stop-gap and a replacement was being planned even before it was launched, so it was only supposed to last until about 1974 at the latest but ended up soldiering on for another decade.

I always thought these had a surprisingly long life.  On sale 1982 to 1992.  But with underpinnings from 1974.  Largely forgotten now and therefore scene tax free.

They drive better than a MK1 golf does too.

Now for this long production run type thing... let’s turn to Yugoslavia...

The good old Yugo...

Known as the Zastava Koral or Tempo Managed to be in production from 1980 up to an astonishing 2008!!!

Very much the same car bar some plastic moulding...

But that’s nothing... how about the Zastava Skala... started off in 1971

Produced all through the 80s almost unchanged

And was still there in the corner at the 2008 Belgrade motor show!

Both were to be replaced by the Sana (or Florida as it was known in Serbia) but all the stopped production at the same time.

I think you know more about it than I do, BL's product planning in the mid 1970s is quite confusing.

Toyota crown?

The Crown Comfort? A 1988 design that they made until 2017.  Very popular as a taxi in Asia, I remember the last ones were soon to be withdrawn last time I was in Singapore, although I'm sure they are still numerous elsewhere in that region.

Loved the mechanical door closer on those so the driver could shut the nearside passenger door from his seat.

I was once in one in Singapore when the driver somehow didn't notice the stopped traffic in front and twatted the car ahead at about 10mph.  Burst the radiator and meant I had to walk off a flyover on the freeway to the consternation of law-abiding Singaporeans.

How about the ZAZ Zaporozhets?  Made from 1960 to 1994 with only slight facelifts.

 Putin with his 1972 Zaporozhets.jpg

Yes that is Putin.

Air-cooled V4 at the back.  If spares were hard to come by I'm sure an Pan-European engine would slot right in.

There's a bloke in Lithuania who always has a few advertised for 1500 euros on car and classic.  There's a ferry from Lithuania to Germany so driving one back would be an easy* journey.

The V4 was a starter motor for a tank, wasn't it?

  • 1 year later...

I have a soft spot for the mk3/5 transits. They lived on in china as various versions and skipped the mk6 completely.
