There is a plan afoot for me to visit Glasgowshire at some point in the near future as gingernutz wants to have a crack at the rear arch on the 9000. I want to get round to saabut's place first, for minor parts like an engine mount though.

Filled this up today before heading through to the Unit to tinker..

How close to 481 miles do we reckon I'll get? 70L tank.

Place bets now!

Once at the unit, the plan was to find out what the rattle was from the drivers side front - I got all set up

Then got a call from my dad saying he had a puncture - so I had to load back up and head out to help him.

Once back and jacked, the fault was obvious - the anti-roll bar bracket has rusted away and the rubber bush has disappeared.

Hopefully it's an easy enough fix.

That identified, it was time to sort out the outside of the car - a wash and wax were the order of the day..

And the manky wheels had a seeing to as well.

The paint is crap, but they cleaned up ok.

Overall, it looks much more presentable!

They are unbelievable. I’m desperate for another pre facelift Areo Auto. I bought one for £700 and then a saloon for £400 about 10 years ago. They were both great cars.

Apart from having to drop the sump last year in order to clean it and the oil pick up strainer due to the well-documented sludging issues that the four cylinder petrol 9-5s suffer from, I can't fault mine. I envisage that I'll be driving it for some time yet

Nearly 500 on this tank full so far.

Took a bimble down to Peebles for some coffee and cake.

Now  190miles into the tank, and the OBC says 37.2mpg..

This was on duty for @davehedgehog31 Saab collection tonight

Stopped for a few quick photos of the steed;

Thick wedge of history, including a comprehensive service, rear brake overhaul and MOT at a Saab specialist not one month ago totalling £300. 

It's the full fat 2.3 Aero, 5 speed manual box, 260bhp I believe as it's a facelift, the acceleration in third is ferocious. A noobtune remap will free up another number of ponies if so desired, although I might make sure it's not fragile first...

Needs a good clean inside. The paint is a lovely colour but the lacquer on the bonnet and roof is fucked. 

It does seem to have been fastidiously looked after mechanically though and has 11 months test. 

We'll see how it goes! Thanks to @320touring for aiding and abetting yet another collection caper.

My first one came from up your way, from none other than @kinkersaab himself. Long before I knew this place existed. A white 9000 Aero, no less. Love them!

Thanks to the generosity of lancer778544 on Pistonheads, I now have a free working cupholder to fit to the car..

Today was a tale of two halves with this..

First up was an attempt to fix the ignition issues. The car will not always fire when the key is turned - there is a knack involving pulling the key up and wiggling, but in all honesty it's a pain in the cunt.

First, the chip reader/immobilizer ring was removed - twist to the left and pull up.

Then a rudimentary tool was fashioned from a nail to release the barrel

then the plastic cap was removed and the spring and washer taken out.

Everything was cleaned as well as possible, and some lubricant applied.

A refit was completed, and it fired first turn!

Oh FFS, still the same issue.

 

Time for plan B - I had a spare module, key and barrel available.

I pulled the lock out and attempted to start the car with a screwdriver - with the key and barrel in the immobilizer ring.

It only started sporadically.

I had a look at the replacement part. You can see how the barrel turns the switch that makes the contact.

 

time to tear out the centre console then!

Ashtray pulled out and 25p found!

The ashtray surround was jimmied off

This reveals 2 bolts

This lets you pull the gear surround up.

Some plugs need removing

Exposing another 4 bolts (2 front, 2 rear)

Then there are 2 bolts at the rear under the back seat vents

Lastly, some plugs (locking switch and the window switches) need removed.

All that done and about to lift it off to continue dismantling..

It looks like the whole switch units are different

i think the spare is from a 2001 car, so pre facelift.

I put it all back together and moved on..

 

Critical thing to do is the ARB Bracket.

Screwfix's Remonstrating fluid was deployed and a 10mm socket and 3/8th ratchet applied to the front bolt.

top tip, turn the steering wheel to move the track rod and get the bellows out the way.

After 43million turns, the front bolt came out.

A similar process on the rear bolt (after bending the burst bracket forward to allow the socket on) resulted in a successful old bracket removal.

The two bolts were cleaned up and refitted to their holes ready for the new bracket and rubber to be applied.

The bracket had arrived when I got home

lastly, time to do some serious work..

Wheelbolts were scabby

The wire brush fixed that.

It was also deployed on the wiper arms

And some satin black was skooshed.

Grotty wiper arms rip my knitting, I have no idea why. So grand work all round. Pity about the ignition switch!
