I might not gel with anything, ever.

It's in your bones, man.  Worth fixing the AX if you can, but don't get too hung up on moving a car on.  It's not just that you can always buy another; it's that you will always buy another.

Wise words

I start my new job tomorrow, which comes with a small pay increase, so I guess I could look at having a two car 'fleet'.

Combined the probably weigh less and are less long and wide than @eddyramrod's Huggy.

May be unrelated but these AX have a fuel sieve in the petrol tank with a very thin take-up pipe within the fuel gauge float chamber. It's under the back seat under a circular plastic plug. You can pull the seat squab out of the car and back on mine to make plenty of room. Pull the plug up and underneath you will see the top of the float chamber. There should be a rubber fuel pipe and a second return pipe going to this. If you unclip these and pull them off and the wiring socket you can then turn the attachment ring - use a screwdriver to tap it round - and this then allows the whole assembly to lift (carefully) out of the fuel tank. Have a good look then to see the sieve on the bottom of the assembly is clear and the fuel pipe itself. Assembly is the reverse - but get a couple of small jubilee clips in advance as the clips to the fuel lines are fiddly and jubilees may be needed instead.

How do I know this - I had a fueling problem and the works in the tank were completely gummed up. This cured my cutting out issues.

These AX are very well designed regards keeping everything simple and repairable. Great underappreciated cars.

Funny moment this evening. Picked my girlfriend up from work and hadn't told her about the Clio. She had got in, we had pulled away and it wasn't until she went to adjust the radio that she said 'What the.....!' She hadn't even realised she had got into a different car...

??

Talk about mingebag motoring, the Clio is more economical than the AX, and is less to insure!

Winning.

Parts on order for the AX, will be able to potter along and sort it in my spare time.

Remember the interior light on the Clio? Or rather the lack of one? Turns out the AX light has the same connections.

It fits* well*

As I've mentioned in other threads, I'm slowly bonding with the little Clio, in spite of the odd driving position. Still plenty of jobs need doing on it, but nothing too scary.

In other news, it looks like I can only really keep one small French car going forward, so I'm offering the AX up for sale/roffle. If nothing comes of that, I'll maybe reconsider and roffle the Clio off for silly money, say 2.50 a ticket or something.

But if I could shift the AX, then maybe I could finally pay for that divorce I've been meaning to get done.

If course, I may yet change my mind in a few days... ? (about cars, not the divorce)

I bet the Clio is for sale in less than a month. I'm calling it now :D

Did these suffer the most pointless facelift? Or we the original mk1 blasé by then? I just know the prefacelift was a sharp looking thing that has aged really well.

They do seem prone to shedding their headlight lenses! I just bought a replacement headlight from eBay for £20 delivered. Haynes said you have to remove the bumper and bonnet. I couldn’t see why and managed to do it without removing either. It probably helped that the front bumper doesn’t fit very well...

Well.

It's dead.

Just went out to pick my other half up and it won't start.

All lights come on, but nothing. Not even a click

And about 15 attempts later....

It starts. I am confused

Loose battery terminal that regained continuity, following you slamming the door in a huff? :-)

Have a look, they have those weird QR turny jobs.

Ignition barrel? Try the key the other way around and wiggle it a bit. Battery terminal clamps? Can't see it would be much...

Clean the starter solenoid trigger wire connection.

It's a little spade terminal, use a scotch pad / emery paper on the starter solenoid terminal and also squeeze the spade terminal with pliers to make it a tighter fit.

These always dick about.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's fine now, starting OK.

Will check connections when it's not dark and pissing it down.
