The Mercedes R-Class is now officially in shite-territory:

2.5k with body damage but proper V8 so who cares!

That seems a lot of money for a mega mile write off that looks as if it probably smells like a Cavcraft Zafira.

ive always fancied one, just not that one unless it was half the price.

Fuck a duck that is tempting!  I've always had a soft spot for these for some reason - maybe because the utter pointlessness of them makes them prime futureshite material.

I remember TG magazine describing those as 'the car to take six executives off roading'. But what actually was it? MPV? Crossover? I guess it was just quickly OBE by the SUV craze.

That numberplate has got to have some value within the homosexual community.

Actually, looking at R Classes on eBay, there seems to be a few of them going for around £3K - although most of them are diesels.

However, it's a new one for my REGISTER, which is always good to see despite the condition. I give this a 600 to one chance of going back on the road, sadly.

It's got 'the bits' though, at least

This is the same seller who had that old Rover 216 recently

'collection kelsall Wirral.'

To be pedantic, they've probably missed out the word 'not' between Kelsall and Wirral. There's a BFO hill on Kelsall bypass that might have been ideal for racing a Porsche 924 in a Cortina 2.3 many years ago.

When I worked at the dealer, the R was one of the few models I really liked. I hated the ML and GL it shared oily bits with, but the R drove far better than either of them. R350d in LWB spec was like a roadgoing Intercity 125.

even though its basically paint and a few stickers!!!

Has there ever been a ‘collectors edition’ model of a car that’s actually worth significantly more than the normal version?

The only thing I can think of is an Escort Harrier, possibly?

The 'missing' C types????

the "new" DB5 007 spec you can buy (not road legal??????)

other than that ..ermmmm

Clio trophy’s a good one! I’d argue that the v6 and the racing puma are different enough from a cooking spec models to count as different cars though. I was thinking more along the lines of different wheels and fancy stickers

That’s a good one! These were pretty tough to sell when they new as well weren’t they? I haven’t seen one in a very long time

I think there might have been more given away as prizes on The Big Breakfast than actually sold!

To carry on with the Renault theme as it's easy off the top of my head.

Renault Mégane II 230 F1 R26 - a bit more "focused" RenaultSport 225 with a LSD standard and fancy Recaro seats lobbed in

Clio Williams - frock with a posh name

Others:

Integra Type R - stripped out with a great VTEC lump in too

Civic Jordan - bright Yellow exterior with fancy seats on a 1.6 VVTi

106 Rallye - omitted a bunch of options to keep the weight down like power steering, central locking and alloys then give a fancy name with paint job

MGF Trophy - last hurrah before the TF facelift while nicking it's engine ahead of its release

Rover 25 BRM - still not sure why a bit of spare wrong coloured grille lobbed on the front is loved for people to pay a premium for

MGB GT LE - people seem to be prepared to pay a premium over standard rubber bumper cars for these, despite appearing to rust far worse

University Motors MGC - tweaked at the dealer for more power and tractability that BL should have done from the factory.

Mini R53 JCW - lob a different pulley on to give a bit more power with a crap stick on epoxy bubble boot badge then charge a premium over a standard Cooper S

Golf Mk5 GTi Edition 30 - slight boost in power and a sill trim reminding you it's a limited edition but it's VAG so enthusiasts lap it up

Sure many, many others that I haven't thought of either where manufacturers or dealers have lobbed a new badge on while stripping stuff out in the name of a special edition.

Edit: Maybe a subject for a separate thread?

The original Rallye was a bit more than that though - it had a mental tuned 1300cc engine which was specific to the car.  The later ones then admittedly got the 8v 1.6 and were basically a stripped-out XSI with stickers.
