is this an AS member's car? If so did you get Billy to take the pictures? :-D

$_35.JPGLooks pretty smart, just a bit small... (cue Father Ted comment)

£2200BIN

That was mine, he has taken the good bits off though and is trying to flog it for a lot more money... It had some really nice period Japanese wing mirrors and wheels on when I built it. I think it looks arse on those wolfies :( It defo has 124K on it too. It's a fairly tidy car but it had had 5!!! pairs of sills on it. It really wants doorskins all round but it is a cool little thing, it's proper dinky!

Here it is when I had it...

What a small world.  By coincidence I bought 5 alloys from the Datsun seller today (but not the ones above).  He was very helpful, boxed them up for me and waited in for the courier (£37.50 for 5 alloys & tyres with Paisley Freight).  Even offered to accept £20 less after we had agreed a price. Seems like a good bloke.

A few oddities at Copart this week.

I remember these - even when new they looked 20 years old.

Aren't the diesels in pre 850 Volvo's a bit... Crap?

They are pretty strong, but nowhere as indestructible as the petrol "redblocks".

They're VW engines, also used in the VW LT van and the Porsche 924.

*I may have made the Porsche bit up.

 and the Porsche 924.

Googled it, it's been done. Not sure if it's the same engine but someone has put a derv in a 924. Knowing how Volkswagen AG did things back then I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was the same engine that's in that Volvo. Actually it looks like 924 and 944 TDI conversions are actually quite popular. I kinda' want one.

People have certainly put four-cylinder TDi's in 924s, not sure if anyone has been insane enough to shoehorn the old six-cylinder in there ?

Let's just say they're not the most refined of engines, check youtube for some wonderful footage of their rattly smokiness !

740 / 760 / 960 diesels have the correct number of cylinders, in the correct configuration.

The 850 Diesel has 5 cylinders* which is not enough. It also has electronics, a charge cooler and no room to work around it.

*Which is massively better than 4 cylinders but not enough.

Times we kicked ourselves after flogging the old 940 SE estate with the venerable 6 pot Volks LT van Diesel, as SornMe notes, no electronic garbage, it might seem a bit sluggish when you first get one but a half turn clockwise on the fuelling screw and its a different motor altogether, i pulled two ton loads of sub base with it when we were extending our driveway, no bother, and could give a good account of itself speedwise driven properly.

The only rear pisser was trying to change two of the glow worms, one in particular cannot be changed, well i couldn't, without removing the injection pump, sod that, but she started happily enough with 5 glowers.

4 speed box plus overdrive switch on top of the gearstick, after fuelling tweak you could drive nearly everywhere in top and overdrive, would pull from 1000rpm happily.

Are Dyanes really this expensive now?

I always thought of them as cheap/thinking mans alternative to 2CV

An acquired taste maybe, wouldn't say it was crap...an old school diesel with no electronics, lots of low down torque, will run on veg/old sump oil and sounds quite good in a straight six clattery thrummy turbo whistlly way. Mines on 246k still pulls well and starts first flick of the key. They're not so good with an auto box like that 760 though, a bit of a mismatch twixt engine and box

Phwoar, the only thing that appears wrong with this to me is the wheel trims (and C*rsa in the background)

I think it's a bit on the salty side, but it does fill 1 of my requirements for another car (automatic) but fails on pretty much all the others (not being an estate being the main one) I am tempted, but I would need to get the price down quite a bit.

I think the time is getting short to own one of these before they get out of reach pricewise.

Dyanes are getting pricey now for sure. £1800 doesn't get you much 2CV on the other hand. Those stripes are pant-wettingly cool too.

WELL on the salty side. My mate was trying to flog an immaculate Vario Volvo for about half of that a while ago. Took ages to sell. They have absolutely no following at all. Not as cute as DAFs for belt-geeks, 'stupid rubber band cars' to anyone else. I think they're great.

If any of you do come across a cheap vario volvo please let me know. Thx.

As long as 8 or 9 are firing who worries about a missfire on a V12?

If they don't sell individual coil packs it's pretty much a write off.
