So thats what it was!

In 1981 Family Volks were on a road trip around the Canadian lakes, in a rented Dodge Omni no less. At Niagra Falls we had a FTP and the rental company provided a replacement in the form of an 'upgrade' of one of these, after much excitement being towed to the local depot.

I remember the chesterfield trim and bizairre vinyl roof arrangement.

BILLS FOR MAINTENANCE TOTALING HUNDREDS IN MR RUBERY OWNERSHIP,,FROM DEALER AND LATER CLEEVEWOOD GARAGE.

BILLS IN 2014 WITH SECOND OWNER FROM C&G MOTORS OF WALLINGFORD OXON. FOR JUST SHY OF 3K FOR ENGINE REBUILD BECAUSE OF SEIZURE AND NEW TYRES,,,IT VERY OBVIOUSLY HAS HAD A NEW EXHAUST AND A BRAKE OVERHAUL SINCE BUT NO BILLS PRESENT,,DRIVES SPOT ON.

HPI REPORT ALL CLEAR.

 

I PRESENTED THE CAR FOR MOT THE DAY I ACQUIRED IT,,QUICKEST WAY TO FIND ANY NIGGLES,,AND TO MY SURPRISE IT FAILED ON VERY LITTLE,THE BRAKES TEST ASTOUNDED ME,,THE CAR HAD OBVIOUSLY SAT FOR SOME TIME BEFORE I BOUGHT IT BUT IT MONSTERED THE ROLLERS,,LOCKING OFF ON EVERY TEST INCLUDING THE HANDBRAKE WITH IMBALANCE IN SINGLE PERCENTAGE FIGURES FOR BOTH AXLES AND THE HANDBRAKE.A COUPLE OF BULBS AND MOCKED UP ELECTRIC WASHER PUMP,,CLEANING METAL BRAKE PIPES AMD A REPLACEMENT MIRROR AND SHE WALKED THE TEST NEXT DAY..SHE WILL NEED A NEW WASHER PUMP,,,I FITTED ONE IN LINE FROM ANOTHER CAR TO GET THROUGH TEST,,,,,,THE TYRES WERE NEW FALKENS ON ALL FOUR ROAD WHEELS IN 2014,,,STILL LIKE NEW.

 

SO THIS ROVER IS VERY FIT MECHANICALLY AND RUNS DRIVES AND STOPS SPOT ON,,,VERY UNUSUAL FOR A 2 OWNER EXTREMELY LOW MILES VEHICLE,,THESE ARE NORMALLY BARN,GARAGE OR FIELD/GARDEN FINDS OFFERED IN NON RUNNING CONDITION,,,NOT THIS ONE IT DRIVES VERY WELL INDEED WITH NO BANGS RATTLES OR CLONKS AND BEING VERY CRITICAL THE REAR EXHAUST BOX IS STRAPPED A LITTLE HIGH AND BANGS NOW AND THEN ON SUSPENSION AND COMING OUT OF REVERSE TO FIRST CAN BE A FIDDLE,,MAYBE THE FAULT MR RUBERY COMPLAINED ABOUT BACK IN 1970,,MAY JUST NEED A NEW BUSH...THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO FAULT WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR..THE BOOT ON REAR SUSPENSION HAS BEEN TAPED UP AND WILL NEED CHANGING AT SOME POINT.HANDY THING TO NOTE THOUGH AND NOT SOMETHING I HAVE SEN BEFORE,,IT HAS 2 SCREWED ON PANELS IN THE BOOT FOR ACCESS TO THE REAR INBOARD DISC BRAKES...THE NORMAL DIFFICULT PAD CHANGE OR BRAKE WORK IS NOT DIFFICULT ON THIS ROVER.

 

THE INTERIOR IS VERY NICE TOO,,NO BUCKLING OF SEAT PIPING THAT THESE SUFFER FROM,,NO RIPS OR TEARS OR SUN DAMAGED STITCHING,,JUST THE ODD MARK AND FADED COLOUR....I HAVE FED IT A COUPLE OF TIMES AND IT RESPONDS WELL AND FURTHER FEEDING AND COLOUR WILL MAKE THE SEATS VERY NICE INDEED,,,CARPETS ARE EXCELLENT WITH THE ODD MOTH PATCH,,BUT DRY ORIGINALS ,,A FEW THINGS COULD BE BETTER,,THE INTERIOR LIGHT HAS NO COVER,THE STALKS ARE SHOWING AGE AS IS BINNACLE CHROME BUT I HAVE A NEW BINNACLE AND A NEW INDICATOR STALK I HAVE BOUGHT FOR IT,,,A LITTLE EFFORT AND NOT A LOT OF MONEY BRINGS THIS INTERIOR BACK,,,,

 

IF YOU DON,T KNOW THESE CARS A STRUCTURALLY SOUND CAR IS AN IDEAL FIRST PROJECT AS EVERY PANEL INCLUDING THE ROOF UN BOLTS,,YOU CAN PAINT ONE AT A TIME AND NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR OFF THE ROAD...AND NEVER BUY A 4 CYLINDER AUTO,,IN MANUAL FORM LIKE THIS ONE THEY ARE VERY PLEASANT AND EASY CARS TO DRIVE,,AHEAD OF THEIR TIME IN COMFORT BUT THE AUTOBOX SAPS THE POWER LIKE NO OTHER CAR I HAVE DRIVEN THEY ARE PAINFULLY SLOW,AND FLEXI PLATES AND TORQUE CONVERTERS ARE TROUBLESOME,,I HAVE OWNED MANY P6 ROVERS BUT WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER AUTO UNLESS IT,S A V8...YOU WILL HATE AN AUTO

 

NOW FOR THE BODYWORK,,,,QUITE OBVIOUSLY FROM THE MILES COVERED THIS CAR HAS SPENT MORE TIME OFF THE ROAD THAN ON IT,,BUT THE BASE UNIT IS EXCELLENT AND UN WELDED,,AND IT DOES NOT NEED ANY PANELS,FLOOR PANS ARE ORIGINAL AND GOOD AS IS THE SUSPECT AREA ON THESE UNDER REAR SEATS,,STILL BONE DRY WITH BONE DRY SOUND PROOFING,,THERE ARE BITS OF SURFACE RUST,,IT,S A 48 YEAR OLD CAR BUT ROCK SOLID...I WILL GO ROUND THE CAR BUT LOOK AT THE PICS TOO,,,,

THE CAR HAS NEVER HAD PAINT EXCEPT FOR THE BOOTLID,PROBABLY UNDER WARRANTY FROM THE FUSSY MR RUBERY.

BOOTLID IS PERFECT

BONNET IS EXCELLENT WITH SOME FLAKY ORIGINAL PAINT,,COMMON PROBLEM ON ALLOY PANEL

ALL FOUR DOORS ARE VERY GOOD,SOME SURFACE RUST BUT SOLID

BOTH OUTER SILL PANELS ARE SOLID,,ODD SURFACE SPOTS AND ONE SMALL DING

REAR WINGS BOTH NEED SMALL REPAIR TO FRONT LOWER CORNER BY DOOR,,PERFECT AT REAR AND AROUND LIGHTS

FRONT WINGS HAVE SOME BUBBLING ON ARCHES AND REAR EDGE OF ONE,,,PERFECT AROUND LIGHTS

REAR DECK HAS SOME SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS

FRONT SCUTTLE HAS SOME SURFACE RUST BUT NO BLISTERS

REAR DOOR SHUTS EXCELLENT

A AND B POSTS EXCELLENT

ORIGINAL BLACK INNER WINGS HAVE NEVER BEEN PAINTED AND A LITTLE LIGHT SURFACE RUST,,,ROCK SOLID.

SOME SURFACE RUST ON SILL DOOR SHUTS AROUND SEALS AND HINGES BUT SOLID.

THERE IS NOTHING DRASTIC CONSIDERING THIS CARS LITTLE USE AND YEARS OF STORAGE AND THE ONLY PREVIOUS REPAIRS HAVE BEEN INSIDE THE BOOT,,,IT WAS OBVIOULY LEFT OUT SIDE FOR SOME TIME AND SUFFERED WATER INGESS TO THE BOOT THROUGH A SLOWLY CORRODING LIP ON REAR PANEL,,,,THIS HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH BOX STEEL AND NOT CORRECT,,AND THOUGH THE SPARE WHEEL WELL IS SOUND AND ORIGINAL A FLAT STEEL PANEL HAS BEEN WELDED ON TOP OF THE RIDGED BOOT FLOOR,,,THE ORIGINAL BOOT FLOOR IS PRESENT WITH SOME PEPPERING,,THIS IS OUT OF SIGHT BUT TO MAKE ORIGINAL WILL REQUIRE A LITTLE WORK,,,

 

SO THERE WE HAVE IT,,A VERY SOUND ORIGINAL 48 YEAR OLD ROVER YOU CAN DRIVE HOME AFTER 1000.S OF POUNDS WORTH OF RECENT ENOUGH WORK,,,,,A VERY GOOD AND USABLE CAR AS IS,,BUT WITH PRICES OF THESE NOW RARE SERIES 1 CARS RISING AND THIS ONES LOW MILES,LOW OWNERS AND EXCELLENT HISTORY FILE ,SOLID BASE UNIT AND EASILY REPAIRABLE PANELS MUST MAKE IT A VERY FINANCIALLY VIABLE PROJECT.

AS I HAVE MISLAID THE V5 I REALISE THAT TAXING THE CAR TO DRIVE HOME IS A PROBLEM,,,I AM SURE YOU COULD DO IT ON THE PHONE TO DVLA IF YOU CAN GET THROUGH TO THEM AND IT WOULD BE A TOUGH COP WHO GIVES YOU GRIEF IN THIS SITUATION ON YOUR DRIVE HOME..I DID NOT WANT TO APPLY FOR IT AND ADD ANOTHER OWNER IF AS I HAVE I DECIDED NOT TO KEEP HER.

SO THOUGH I HAVE NO DOUBTS ABOUT THE CARS ABILITY TO DRIVE ANYWHERE IF IT HELPS I CAN DELIVER UP TO 200 MILES AT A VERY REASONABLE COST TO COVER MY FUEL,,,

IF YOU ARE THE LUCKY WINNER BE GENTLE WITH HER AS I DOUBT THIS FRESHLY RE BUILT ENGINE HAS BEEN RUN IN,,THOUGH THE CAR WAS VERY OBVIOUSLY PREPARED FOR MOT AROUND THE TIME THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT,,A FULL REBUILD OF THE ORIGINAL,NOT A RE CON OR SECOND HAND ENGINE,IT NEVER DID GET TESTED FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY SOMEONE WOULD SPEND THOUSANDS ON A CAR AND GET IT TO ROAD LEGAL CONDITION AND NOT USE IT,,MAYBE ILL HEALTH OR PLANS FOR A RESPRAY AND RUN OUT OF FUNDS,,WHO KNOWS,,,

THE CAR DOES CLEAN UP QUITE WELL AS YOU CAN SE IN THE FIRST PICTURE BUT IT HAS 48 YEAR OLD PAINT ON ALL PANELS EXCEPT THE BOOT AND I BET THAT IS NOT MUCH NEWER,,THE UPSIDE OF THAT IS NO PREVIOUS REPAIRS,,,YOU WON,T FIND ANY FILLER OR PATCHES ANYWHERE ON THIS CAR AND PANEL FIT IS AS IT LEFT THE FACTORY AND IN THIS CASE VERY GOOD AND IT IS VERY STRAIGHT INDEED".
