Maybe i did not make it clear what I meant.

Hopefully photos will make me speak in English.

The bar I was writing about in the socket set. Is arrowed. It is small so I use various length tubes to increase leverage when needed.

The smaller arrow is for the item in the next image. This is a drive head with a hole through it. In this case I have put a a extension drive through it. I could not immediately find the rebar I normally use.

I hope that clears up any errors I made in the post above.

Yes, that is perfect use of a T-Bar! Obviously a translation thing, I apologise!

For a real breaker bar, use a normal breaker bar and a 6ft long piece of scaffy pole over the bar. Thus bending/breaking breaker bar and the stuck nut/bolt laughing at you.

Two hours flew by at the lock-up, cleaning, tidying, sweeping rust, lubricating everything. Very little in terms of tangible results to report - this thing just eats time!

Spaceman Robbie is back in place.

And more cleaning on the side improved things a bit...

the nicely painted "Spaceman Robbie" reminds me of the windscreen wiper scene in christine

glad to see she is continuing to clean up well at least :)

ah, minor details.

Pass on to your friend that I haven't tried.

More seriously...

I can slowly buy myself out of trouble with the engine - there's a whole one for £300 on the bay at the mo for example:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Villiers-11E-engine/254131314056?hash=item3b2b681d88:g:mUAAAOSwk~Vca~pU:rk:24:pf:0

worry number 1 is V5 - no, V5 no project, worry two is fibreglass - if I can't fix the a-pillar or the rear valance - no go. Worry 3 is replacing the whole floor, Worry 4 is the interior controls and their viability. So engine is only at number 5 at the mo :-) (just head of the possible re-wire at number 6)

the better question is where is the rest of the Mk12 that engine came out of? :)

(not only was the 11E type made pretty much only for invalid carriages, but you can see some of the peacock blue paint on a bracket there)

It's a simple 2 stroke engine, even if it is completely fubar'd parts to rebuild it like new are likely less than £200 with machining costs!!

Posted

I used to have half a dozen engines for these. I bought a job lot of villiers engines when I had a load of James bikes and thought* they would be useful/ compatible for spares. I ended up selling them off for people to build go karts with them, it was have been 1996 and I got £10 each for the runners and a fiver on the one bastard that would cough and fart but not run properly no matter what I did. It took about 6 months to shift them all.

Thanks for the comments - you know me by now, worry is a motivational tool!

I've watched that video of the Villiers running before, sounds great.

Yep, that seller has 3 'barn find' engines. I agree, they must be out of MK12s. Might be interesting to ask the seller.

Eggs got the 5 quid one in his watch list ...

Here's what it will sound like full chat ... :-(

in one of the period videos theres a short clip of someone starting up and driving away in a Model 67 which shares the same villiers engine, which interestingly im pretty sure sounded differently to that

im guessing because the Invacars have some sort of an exhaust where as that does not really?

Posted

Yep, and the little pea-shooter exhaust is all there, if a tad rusty!

Eddie H will be pleased to know I've ordered that breaker bar.

The problem with threads like this is that if you let them run away they end up taking ages to catch up on.... anyway I’m really glad I did spend the time to catch up!

This looks like a super save and glad to see it in the fold. Plus it’s great to see that the approach to doing tiny but easy to finish jobs before tackling any big jobs isn’t just me!

Good luck Egg !

From the engine seller

Sorry, I have three simular engines like this which I picked up from a barn and I have no other information. It appears they used this engine for many micro cars and invalid carriages.

cheers

The boot handle and hinges (which clearly need replacing) are a bit odd - they don't look in the slightest bit automotive to me - more like door furniture!

They are plus-gassing before I try and remove.

I reckon those hinges are door style, 2.5 inch (63mm)

ohh thats cleaned up the best yet out of all the body work, very nice, also happy to see theres no fibre glass damage or such round the hinges/handle :)

I'm going to have saw/grind off those hinges, which could cause issues!

my 'list of worries' yesterday didn't even include that I don't have a door, lol   :-D  :-D

daft but serious question: could I fabricate a door using some kind of canopy - would that even be legal?

AFAIK technically you dont even need a door to be road legal?

if its not there it cant fail the MOT on it sorta thing I think

just look at an FX3 Taxi for example :)

Posted

Interesting...know a mate has a buggy...thing...which lacks any form of doors, and has an ex military Hummer which I don't think I've ever seen with the doors attached when it's out...not sure if they're actually an MOT requirement...

One thing I've just seen someone doing to create complex shapes in fibreglass was to create a former in plaster/clay and then to form things over that before smashing out all the clay and such once everything has set.

Mini Moke. Jeep Wrangler. Motorbike.

Any van with a sliding driver's door.

Doors are overrated

Posted

some rovers doors were optional, ie they could be removed.

I doubt if even the health and safety bods would permit this in the army these days. All we had was a webbing strap to stop us falling out. It was usually very cold to drive, but for posing it was great.
