Can only say the purchases off here have been brilliant. bramz and beko gold stars each. Going to have all this hassle next year when I sell either an XM hatch, bx non turbo diesel or a cheap trailer tent. Not looking forward to it at all

Note to self: revisit thread on Sunday

The whole exercise was a bit of a disaster. I always was going to buy it because it was solid and allowed me to tick an XK8 off the list. A truly remarkable car for its grace and beauty is my verdict on it by the way. However it only made £3000, which is piss poor for a solid one. The auction winner should be gagging to get it really at that price, but his first correspondence was "does it have an MOT", which was the first thing written on the listing. I will honour the sale of course but knowing what I do now, would rather have sold it for that here instead or even sell the other interesting Jag I have under preparation and hang onto the XK8.

Temporarily back on topic, I've had a crack at fixing the oil leak,

This was the stuff I forgot to use last time,

It's all back together, apart from timing and fitting the distributor, which is a PITA in itself. Should I keep it? Eddie recons they're shite anyway.

There's this pleasingly random element to AS sales. You know it will be a car, but what car it turns out to be is entirely down to what the shiter was able to get hold of....

I forgot to mention, this Blazer was registered in 2001 so has quite expensive tax, 330 quid or so. The V5 says it was manufactured in 1999 though, so there's the possibility of getting the date of manufacture on the V5 altered to get cheaper tax- although I mentioned this a few months back and nobody agreed with what I was saying.

Surely it's like getting a heritage certificate for a Rover P5 or something that just missed out on tax exemption by a month or so? (back in the day obv)

Doesn't it depend on import date or when it was first registered? I'm not sure myself as I can see where you're coming from with that idea.

sometimes the weird ones do work out. My wife’s Golf went to a guy who worked on an oil rig. He sent a deposit and picked up about ten days later. I did tell him that I had been dubious as the old ‘on an oil rig can mate collect?’ Is a known scam and he laughed and said he had had a few people slam the phone down on him when he tried to buy cars. Her other Golf went to a Polish guy with pretty much zero English beyond ‘car for sale, where? Spell for me’ he turned up, looked it over for all of two minutes, paid the asking price in cash and drove off. Best buyer ever.

I've bought from Poles and sold to them and they are the best around to deal with. They are good at judging, they make a decision one way or the other, and they have the money ready when buying. Also , they don't make stupid offers. They are reasonable sellers, their prices aren't too high, they will haggle a little, and the cars are properly clean.Always been a good experience. And also applies to the few other East Europeans of other nationalities I've dealt with as well.

And they personally are almost always clean and polite.

I've had this with the Mazda recently. It was apparently a dead cert I would get a deposit and they would collect.

That was last week. I see no deposit. Just my broken dreams and heartbreak.

Although hopefully a shiter is after it now so, there is always an upside.

That Mazda looks an utter bargain and I considered it for myself.

However, I've got WAY too much and it's just not sensible for me to buy it.

Someone is going to get a ridiculously good deal out of that I reckon.

I've generally good experience of the Eastern Europeans too, but I think they often make a quick decision as the cars are going East to be taken apart for spares.  So the odd defect is hardly an issue really.

because this guy had agreed to buy i'd told other interested parties that it had sold.

Unless someone leaves a deposit I tell people that it remains "on sale".

Pisses quite a few people off it seems, but Meh.

2 sales involving eastern Europeans. Sold a car to a lithuanian lad who turned up and put it in the back of a wagon no issues and another I bought a crash damaged 328i off sight unseen paid for the car and transport then he rings me a day later saying "I've started it up and I think there is an engine fault so I'd like to refund your money! Top man that

Yes.

Some little bastard from Preston had my daughter and I waiting in the pissing rain at the railway station when he said he was on the train and he wasn’t.

Yeah, I said I got on the wrong train and ended up in Barrow in Furness and bought that Cherry instead from a nice bloke who was waiting at the railway station and offered to show me some puppies....

If you have trouble selling a BX on here I would be surprised.

Spoke to my mate but he has agreed to buy a RAV4 (of all things) off someone he works with so wouldn’t be interested.

...When I was selling my old Lethargic VW T4 1.9D - had it up for €600 'ono', I had a group of 6 leather jacket wearing Lithuanian n Latvian lot turn up to 'view it'- essentially a   gang; they had a brief discussion where one, the smallest, took it for a short test drive after I asked for the keys of their Ford Galaxy; I was hopelessly outnumbered and on my own at home here at the time.... gearchange was an 'acquired skill', as I attempted to explain...

Anyways they all had a protracted discussion and afterwards, their spokesman declared, in broken English  'we all discuss - you get €400 for dis, now shake..."  - I replied 'no- that's not happenening" .... " we buy for CAZSCH n we give now €200.... job for you, you drive to Waterford; ring this number, we give next €200, n have signing details"...

after we rexchanged keys...I stood firm n said the van isn't leaving here till I get the price I want in full, which isn't €400; ... their spokesman piped up; "...we are here, n we give you time to think now for some minutes" ... the rest were jabbering on in the background...

...I'll be honest, the 'inner core was heating up' so I said 'make it €500 - holding up five fingers, asked them all to gather in front of the walkway to the front door - mentioning CCTV and 'camera'...

...a fter a brief silence, n some more gabbering they all loaded into the Galaxy n sped off...

Ive a Latvian mate - Arthur; n while Ive know him years he says the Latvian n Lithuanians rarely gel or work together; n had his doubts about what I was telling him afterwards, but it did happen ...

,,,Nowadays its a matter of politely showing the car to whoever turns up; with the cash in full - for the MGB GT I did sell it to an elderly gent, who after paying a deposit the week before, lost its keys Id gave to him at the time n we had to load it up onto his mates trailer using my 3Tonne trolly jack - he did beat me down on the price but he seemed like a nice old gent so myself n my brother pitched in...

...if you hold out you usually get the 'right' straight up buyer....

I’m pleased to announce that this Blazer now has a LEAK FREE engine after I added some special sealant to the inlet manifold front and rear edges.

Is everyone sure they don’t want to buy it from me?

There isn’t a thread other than this one, all the details from the advert I posted on Facebook are here.

Never had an issue with buying from here-I live in Essex but have purchased shite (And no so shite) vehicles as far apart as Glasgow, Norwich and Reading. Even the one sale went exceedingly well.

I've a couple of dozen purchases and sales elsewhere that we total frustration.

Never been surer of anything in my life.

...and anyway, I've nowhere to keep it.

Accidentally reversed this thing through my garage door the other day. Looks repairable as it's only one of the side roller bracket things that's broken. Have you ever tried bodging together a garage door while balancing it on your head, scrabbling around for the relevant socket while simultaneously attempting to tension a cable with the result that the whole lot collapses on you guillotine style, all while the wife watches and tuts-  all on Christmas day? I have.

Posted

I need to replace a cable on my garage door, I need to replace the door really as it's snapping but I shan't.

Posted

Just to add, this Chevy PISSES though closed garage doors with ease. It's quite a beast. Slight blip of the throttle and straight through it went. Top marks.
